owner of this notebook : cleo mendez
if you find this journal, please return to 34 penningway street
Cleo sat at her desk silently, lazily flicking a rubber ball back and forth along its surface. Her eyes flicked inattentively around her constricted messy room, her furniture squeezed together in her tight space. She perched herself on the edge of a small, uncomfortable stool with her feet dangling off the edge, sent upstairs after causing mayhem in the dining room. Beside her was her bed, however small it was, felt cosy and plain among her stacks of books and essays from last year of school, with its patchwork quilt and pillow covers made by her mother. Taking a deeper look around the room, she realised making her way around the place would be a chore, so she sighed and picked up a stick of some-sorts and whispered into the flickering flame that sat glowing on the tip. Suddenly, a huge pile of clothes in the middle of the room seemed to float into her uninhabited closet by themselves, folded tightly with another flick and then they landed with a soft thud. The dust collected in the high corners of her ceiling were swabbed away with a duster, dumped into a basket with the rest of her cleaning utensils and swept into a corner. Considering most of the room was clean after a few minutes of her spell work, she placed down her wand and returned to playing with her ball.
Knock, knock.
"Come in." Cleo mumbled, fiddling with the ball distractedly. Her door inched open, creaking as her mother pushed her way into her room.

Her mother, Aerith, mumbled as she walked into the centre of the room with her hands tucked behind her back.
"Cleo."
"Mother."
"You going to apologise to your sister?"
"No."
"Really?"
"I don't really want to, she was clearly in the wrong."
"Well, if you refuse to be a good sister, I'm afraid you'll have to go without dinner then."
"..."
"Oh, yes, and before I go, here's a little something for you."
She dropped a book onto Cleo's desk carelessly, then turned to leave to the door. Cleo stared at it until Aerith slammed the door behind her, then picked it up in a hurry and flicking through the pages. Nothing. Blank pages, each as bland as the last, until she reached her last page. "To my dearest Cleo,
How are you faring with your mother? Is she treating you alright? I promise to return as soon as I can, however, I'd like you to have this journal as a way to express all your thoughts throughout your school year. Think of it as a large book of letters you can hand to me once you see me again.
From Dad xxxx"Her eyes darted along the short paragraph, narrowing her eyes. "Is this it?" she asked herself, stroking the page and grimacing. "This is all he could tell me?"
Cleo sighed, bowing her head and sniffling, stifling back a small sob. She could get through this. Besides, this was a gift from him, so he must be fine. What was it again? A journal? For school? Flicking back to the first page, she picked up a quill from her ink pot and gulped down her endless questions, to begin writing...
