Mapleshade

1. Injured

A pumpkin colored she-cat with cream patches and bright fern colored eyes stood atop a hill, her thick, long fur whipping in the wind. Her eyes narrowed maliciously as a scrawny apprentice appeared on the hill below her. A deep gray paw with thick fur shot out, sending a large trout spiraling into the air. The she-cat danced forward, her paws lightly touching the ground without even making a sound on the old, dry, and brittle leaves. "What do we have here?" she sneered, and the apprentice looked up in fear. The small cat's ears flung back, his eyes widening until they were the size of the moon. "P-please, d-don't hurt m-me!" the small apprentice pleaded, and the she-cat clicked her tongue. "Do you even know who I am? If you did, you would know why I'm doing this!" the she-cat hissed, and the apprentice's eyes widened even farther in recognition. "You're Appledusk's former mate, Mapleshade! I thought RiverClan wouldn't take you," the apprentice let out quickly, and Mapleshade sighed softly. "Yes, that's me. And your young Perchpaw, Appledusk's apprentice," she noted before letting her claws slide out. "I-I'm sorry about your kits. P-please, just don't hurt me," Perchpaw whimpered, and a thought slid around in Mapleshade's mind. I must have Appledusk here so he can witness me destroy all his hard work! She let her claws back in before lunging at Perchpaw. She purposely let her paws make as much racket as she could on the dry leaves. Appledusk rushed out of the undergrowth, and he screeched in horror. "Mapleshade! Put Perchpaw down!" he yowled, muscles tense and ready to pounce. A dark orange she-cat with a bulging belly stepped out behind Appledusk, and rested her tail on his shoulders. "Don't go out there. I want our kits to have a whole father when their born in a quarter moon," she murmured, and Appledusk bushed out. "Reedshine, my old pal. What are you doing here?" Mapleshade screeched, flinging an injured Perchpaw to the side and lunging for the pregnant she-cat. Mapleshade's jaws wrapped around Reedshine's neck, and Appledusk sank his claws into Mapleshade's spine. He hauled the she-cat off his mate, and snapped his jaws threateningly at her neck. "Get out of here," he hissed, his fur bushed out to make him twice the size he normally is. "I must make you suffer!" Mapleshade screeched, and lightning flashed to her left. The light illuminated the she-cat in the dying light, and Appledusk saw her muzzle was coated red and her eyes had a crazed and wild look. She tried to lunge again for Reedshine, and Appledusk ripped his teeth through her paw. Mapleshade collapsed, and the she-cat looked to the huddled shape of Perchpaw. All she saw was a flash, and then the apprentice was on top of her, his jaws closing around her neck. She rolled over, kicking him off with powerful hind legs. She tried to stand, but gasped for air and scratches made her hurt all over. Her paw hurt, and she couldn't put any weight on it. "Get out of here," Appledusk hissed. Mapleshade stood, cradling her injured hind paw to her belly. She lashed out maliciously, and struck home as she dug her claws deep into Reedshine's massive belly. The dark ginger she-cat let out a blood-curtling scream, and Appledusk snapped at Mapleshade. the she-cat limped over the hill, triumph gleaming in her eyes. She collapsed into a pile of moss, and slowly started licking the scratches that littered her body. She started to lick her paw, and winced. The pain overwhelmed her, and she lashed out a paw at some cobwebs. They wrapped around her paw, and she slowly set them on her hind paw. It hung limply, and she slowly realized that she would never be able to use it again. Appledusk had seriously injured her with his bite, biting through the bone. If only he had been that protective about me when our kits drowned. Mapleshade growled, and the smell of RiverClan circled her. Perchpaw appeared over the rise, and she glared up at him. He was carrying herbs, and she smelled the scent of marigold. "I managed to sneak away with these. I'm really sorry about what I did, but Appledusk ordered me, that if I ever saw you, to fight until one of us was dead. I never thought about the fact that he left you when your kits drowned," he apologized softly. "Thank you," Mapleshade whispered before coating the marigold onto her wounds and laying cobwebs on it to keep the paste down. "If I ever see you again, I will kill you," Mapleshade whispered softly. Perchpaw looked at her in confusion, then asked, "Why?" Mapleshade looked at him as if he was an idiot. "The grief is slowly driving me mad. I swear on StarClan that by a quarter moon from now I won't even remember you," she whispered, and Perchpaw nodded. "You aren't just physically injured, are you?" Perchpaw asked, and Mapleshade shook her head. "I'm emotionally injured also," she whispered. "Now go, before anybody realizes your gone."

2. Sinking

Mapleshade watched as Perchpaw disappeared into the bushes, and smiled softly to herself. Darkness consumed her, and then she was sinking in a river. "Water can drown anything, even the darkest of hearts," a soft voice whispered, and Mapleshade screeched loudly. "What's going on?" she whimpered, and a crazy thought slithered into her head. "No, no, no, no, no," she suddenly whispered, shaking her head slowly. "Why would I ever do that?" she whimpered before staring at the stars. "StarClan? Have you come for me?" she whispered softly as stars tumbled down around her. "The stars will abandon the maple, and it will die of cold and bitterness," the voice whispered again. "What the heck is going on here?" she cried out in horror.

Mapleshade jerked awake in her nest, cobwebs coating her wounds. She realized she ust have fallen asleep after Perchpaw left. She got up, and limped over to the river. She leaned down to drink, and purred as the cool liquid slithered down her throat. A roaring filled her ears, and the she-cat looked up in horror as a massive wave tumbled down around here. She thrashed her paws, and realized something. My kits must have felt like this, when they died. Her head broke the surface, and she gulped in air ravenously. "I can't die" she screeched furiously, before her thick fur started to drag her down. The bottom to the river neared as Mapleshade sunk faster and faster. A loud thud echoed in her ears as her body slammed into the riverbed. Her chest popped upward as air tore from her body. A large bubble escaped her lips, and floated to the surface. Mapleshade thrashed, but miserably gave up as her lips started to turn blue. The omen that talked about water being able to drown anything came back to her mind, and she let her thrashing chest thump to the riverbed as she closed her eyes.

The she-cat suddenly rose up, lighter than air. Three small kits, Larchkit, Petalkit, and Patchkit, padded up to her. Patchkit rushed forward, and Mapleshade purred as she groomed her tiny kit. Realization hit her, and she remembered she was at the bottom of the river. "Does this mean..." she trailed off, and Petalkit nodded. "Ravenwing thought we should come to get you," LArchkit whispered, and a starry path appeared from nowhere. Next to it, a shadowy path sprang into view. "What's that for?" Mapleshade asked softly, knowing her kits would know more about StarClan than she did. "StarClan doesn't accept all cats. Sometimes, they send them back down the Star Trail, and they are forced to take the Shadow Path to the Place of no Stars," Patchkit whispered softly as they stepped onto the Star Trail. "So you're saying there's a possibility that StarClan won't accept me," Mapleshade sighed, then added, "I guess I deserve it. I killed two cats and tried to kill a queen in revenge for you. I kept seeing you being dragged away, and after I killed Ravenwing, Larchkit disappeared. When Frecklwish was killed, Petalkit disappeared. That only left you, my dear Patchkit," Mapleshade whispered softly, and Patchkit dipped his head softly.

"You are not welcome here!" a screech sounded, and a large gust of wind knocked Mapleshade back. "What the heck?" she screeched, and suddenly the Star Trail disappeared. "Mommy!" Mapleshade's kits chorused as the trail disappeared. She suddenly started to sink, and found herself in a marshy place with no cats around. "Where am I?" she called out, and a solid white cat, One Eye, appeared. "Welcome, Mapleshade! We've been expecting you for some time now," the cat purred. "Why am I here?" Mapleshade asked softly, and One Eye snapped his head around. "The same reason we all are here. You have darkness in your heart, Mapleshade. You've finally become one of us," One Eye hissed. "I don't want to be here! I want my kits! Where are they?" Mapleshade screeched, and One Eye tackled her. "Their living their petty little afterlives in StarClan, the place we weren't allowed. Forget them, Mapleshade, hate them. You must become a full member, hate all things StarClan and Clan related. We may not be allowed to meet each other, but we do quite frequently. And when we do, we plot for the demise of the Clans, StarClan included." Mapleshade looked up in horror as One Eye hissed and spat each time he said StarClan. "What's wrong with Star-" Mapleshade was cut off by a hiss. "They abandoned us! They didn't let us have a happy time in their ranks, but sent us to this scum-filled place. Quite frequently we find a random bone, but we aren't allowed to touch it. See a mouse, you pounce. Correct? Wrong! If you pounce, the prey disappears and you are left with a crumbling belly." Mapleshade felt a sinking feeling as One Eye melted into the shadows. I'll be back.
