Prologue
The snow covered the town, like a layer of dust on an old shelf. Villages of snowmen littered the grounds, their carrot noses coated in a thick frost. The snow fell heavily, but not heavy enough for a blizzard. The snow was softer than silk. Remnants of a snowball fight lay on the side of a hill where a snow angel could be found. The schools had been closed, but there were no children in the streets. It was too late for that. But, even as cold as it was, the Ice Cream Shop still had business- their hot cocoa was the best in town. A sign taped to the door of the shop read, 'We have hot cocoa! Best in town!'
The employee behind the counter was suddenly awoken when a loud 'Ding!' rang from the door's bell. A girl emerged from the snowy outside, wrapped in a large scarf. It was striped with white and a faded light pink. She was also wearing a large hat and a coat. Her hands and face were pale, a stark contrast against her bright red hair.
"Uh, j-just a minute!" the startled employee stuttered. He looked over at the customer, recognizing her suddenly. He ran out in front of the counter, knocking over a stand of waffle cones in the process.
"You dropped something..." the girl chuckled, her voice muffled by her scarf.
"Elizabeth? Where... Have you been all this time?" the employee mumbled, picking up the stand and replacing the broken cones. The girl seemed distracted, as if someone else was speaking to her. She tapped him on the shoulder, obviously in a hurry.
"Me and my dog... Can we stay at your house?" she whispered.
"Sure, but... You might want to keep the dog quiet. I'm not supposed to have pets." he responded.
