( ASPEN,VINNIE & THE DEFINITION OF RUDE.)[ characters: aspen & vinnie word count: 924 notes: i took the other way of expressing "rude" from a character in a nancy drew game. ]⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯ ⋯⋯ ⋯⋯⋯ ⋯Confusion.
That was the only emotion that swam around in Aspen’s head as she woke up in a field of pale flowers. She had been talking to Hayden when she passed out and … well, apparently, woke up in Heaven, or something of the likes.
“I have to admit,” Aspen muttered to herself as she stood up and brushed off her fading jeans, which had torn at the knee somewhere between the time she passed out and woke up. “I’m a bit disappointed. No angels or roads paved with gold? That would have been pretty sweet. Where is everybody, anyways?” She shaded her eyes with her hand as she scanned the area. There wasn’t a soul around—not even one angel.
“I wouldn’t start talking to yourself. I did that, too, and now I can’t stop,” a voice from behind her said.
Aspen jumped in her skin. She whipped around to find herself staring at a girl with honey-colored hair and vibrant green eyes. She couldn’t be much older than Aspen. “Who are you?” spat Aspen hostilely.
“Vinnie,” piped the girl, sticking out her hand. When Aspen did not take it, she scowled and twined her own fingers together behind her back. “Just so you know, this isn’t Heaven, though someone went to great lengths to make it seem like it. It’s perfect in every way. Perfect water, perfect food, perfect surroundings … and, perfectly boring.”
Aspen had to chuckle at that. “So, I’m guessing there isn’t anyone else around, then?”
“Nope. I woke up here a couple months ago, and not one soul has shown up since.”
“A couple months?” gawked Aspen. “How did you keep yourself from going absolutely insane? Like, what do you even do around here for fun?”
A grin crept its way up Vinnie’s lips. “Come here,” she replied, gesturing for Aspen to follow her. “I’ll show ya’.” She led Aspen through the thick woods, and stopped so abruptly that Aspen nearly collided with her.
“Hey! What do you think—?” Aspen started, but Vinnie cut in.
“Look,” she whispered. Aspen followed her gaze, and up, built between the tangled mazes of branches, was a treehouse. A plain, yellow treehouse with a blue door and a rope ladder leading up to it. “Rude, isn’t it?” Vinnie beamed triumphantly, planting her hands on her hips. “I just finished it yesterday.”
Aspen furrowed her eyebrows, confusion written all over her face. “‘Rude’? What do you mean?”
“Rude. You know, like, ‘cool’ or ‘epic’. I made it up.”
“That’s weird,” muttered Aspen. “Don’t say it around me, please.”
“I’ll do what I like,” Vinnie answered defiantly. “Anyways, wanna take a look inside?”
“No.”
“Oh, come on, spoil sport!” Vinnie grabbed a hold of Aspen’s arm, forcing her up the ladder into the squat little house. It was as plain inside as it was on the outside, except for one thing—it was filled with crowns made out of dandelions.
“Flower … crowns?”
“I had to do something while I was here,” Vinnie replied defensively, collecting two handfuls of the vibrant yellow weeds and pressed them to her cheek. “And I like dandelions, so this just kind of happened.”
“They’re weeds, you know.”
Vinnie’s hands faltered for a brief moment, and ever so slowly, she laid the dandelions down. “I know,” she spat, dusting her hands off on her pale khaki shorts.
Aspen rolled her eyes, unconsciously bringing her hands up to touch a flushed, purple bruise on her face, and winced. “Hey, haven’t you got a swimming hole or something around here?”
Vinnie bit down on her lip, hard, until the metallic taste of iron flooded her mouth. “Well … yeah—but—”
“Great! Can you show me to it?”
“Uh, sure. Follow me.” Carefully, the two girls made their way down the latter and through thick foliage until they burst into a clearing. It was picturesque; something you’d find in a magazine. The pond was lined with grey, pale blue, black and white pebbles, the water was clear, and raspberry and lilac hedges framed the clearing.
“Rude, isn’t it?” a very smug Vinnie asked, turning to Aspen, who’s mouth was agape.
“No, not rude, but it is amazing!” Aspen corrected irritably, stripping down to her underclothes as she spoke. After peeling off her jacket, t-shirt, and jeans, she waded waist-deep in the cool water, clenching her teeth together to keep them from chattering. When Vinnie didn’t follow immediately, she turned around to face the other girl. “Aren’t you coming?” asked Aspen quizzically, extending her arms out slightly in invitation.
“Uh—no,” replied Vinnie hesitantly, shaking her head vigorously.
“Why not?”
“I can’t—well, I can’t … I can’t swim,” she admitted softly, digging her bare toes into the soft earth, clasping her left wrist with her right hand behind her back.
Aspen beamed. “Oh, that’s okay. You don’t have to come in all of the way. Just, like, thigh deep or something.”
Vinnie sighed dramatically, inching towards the pond. “Fine.” She disturbed the still water by wriggling her toes in the icy liquid, causing it to ripple around her feet.
“Now, step closer to me,” instructed Aspen, stretched out her arms. Vinnie took her hand, and, with a sly wiggle of her eyebrows, Aspen yanked her into the water.
Screeching obscenities, Vinnie flailed and flopped about in the water.
“See, you can swim!” Aspen yelled in mock praise. “Though …” a devious grin curved the edges of Aspen’s lips. “You could say it was a little … rude.”
With one last scream, Vinnie launched herself at Aspen.
