Overview

Times are changing. Like the Clans at the lake after the Battle of the Dark Forest, the Tribe of Rushing Water has faced turmoil amongst it's ranks. Arguments broke out, as cats urged that the way of the Clans was a better path. After moons of tension and fighting, a tom by the name of Owl That Hunts At Night gathered a healthy band of cats, and they left the Tribe, traveling to the other side of the mountains. Here, the undergrowth was lush, evergreens towered over rushing streams, and a constant mist clung to the air.
There they stayed, where they found Starclan's guidance, and Owl That Hunts At Night became Owlstar. With his new name and granted nine lives, he lead his new clan to bloom and succeed in the path of new ancestors, the Tribe of Endless Hunting behind them.
Hence, Mistclan was born.
Seasons upon seasons later, a ragged molten tortoiseshell cat takes her place as leader. Tigerstar, a hot tempered she-cat, takes her turn at guiding her clan. Things are perfect, until one day, a strange loner shows up, claiming to know Starclan. Events turn, and Tigerstar finds herself faced with a clan on the brink of division.
Omens arise, prophecies are told, and the clan must prepare for a battle with darkness itself. Can Mistclan survive? Only fate will tell!

Prologue

Postby .mischief managed. » Tue Feb 17, 2015 6:02 pm

    Prologue

Thorns rattled along a clearing as a cat emerged from the wood into the open. A slick-furred black tom, eyes blazing green in the dim light that still trickled over the mountain peeks. His paw steps pattered over the stone as he made his way quickly to the other side where a stream gurgled downhill.
Even now, as the sun was only beginning to disappear beyond the horizon, the mountain air was dropping drastically for the night. The cat shivered as he picked his way nimbly over the stones in the brook, leaping out onto the other side and breaking into a run as he made his way up the mountain side. His gaze darted around the forest uneasily in expectance that something might jump out of the brush at any moment. In the distance, a raven cried out. Though it was quite far off, the sound bounced off of the rocks, echoing around the tom and making his fur stand on end.
As a crumbling overgrown stone structure rose up in front of him, he skittered around a corner and pushed through a woven fern tunnel. The smell of familiar cats settled him slightly, but not nearly enough. Pushing through into the clearing he looked around wildly at the bustling bodies, searching for one pelt in particular through the panicked crowd. Within moments, he found the pale tortoiseshell perched on a ledge, scrambling to give orders.
The tom pushed his way to the front of the crowd.
"Tigerstar!" He yowled. The leader's attention was drawn instantly to him and she leapt down, bringing with her a shower of moss and pebbles. Immediately, a bright russet cat took her place and continued belting instructions.
Her expression was weary and tired, and she frowned as she picked up on an excited conversation between two other apprentices.
"Can you believe it, Flamepaw? Our first battle!" A small patchy ginger and grey she-cat mewed, her eyes round and tail erect. Her companion puffed his chest, and he swiped at empty air with unsheathed claws.
"No one will beat me, I'll claw any cat's ears off!" He gave a mock growl, ready to spar with his clanmate when a larger cat intervened.
"Juniperpaw, Flamepaw, don't you give yourselves unnecessary wounds!" He hissed, his blind gaze somehow meeting that of the two young cats. "I'll have enough to patch up when this is over!"
The apprentices ducked their heads. "Sorry, Towheeflight." They mumbled in unison, and scampered off into the crowd. The medicine cat scowled and padded away briskly, ducking into a small cave in the rocks, the trickling of water soundly softly from within it.
The Leader shook her head, turning back to Shadowpaw. Her expression darkened. "What have you found?" She rasped anxiously, shifting her weight between each paw.
The black tom quivered, looking side to side before answering her. "I got as close as I could without being seen. There are so many of them..." Shadowpaw's voice trailed and his fur began to rise. "They're coming," he choked out.
Tigerstar's expression softened slightly, and she opened her jaws to begin to reassure the young cat, but her first word was cut off sharply my a deafening screech.
There was a flurry of black feathers as a huge dark mass swooped into the camp. Somewhere within the gathered clan members there was a yowl, and claws flashed. The flying invader was picked swiftly out of the air by a set of strong tabby paws. Cats dodged out of the way to reveal a panting Senior Warrior standing over a crumpled pile of wings in the midst of the crowd. A silver and white she-cat rushed to his side just as the clan cats burst into startled yowls.
        "Ravenclaw! Are you alright?"
        "You killed it!"
        "What is it...?"
        "It smells strange!"
        "That was huge!"
The ragged leader lashed her tail, hissing for silence. Shadowpaw stood behind her, his paws refusing to move from where he was. The scent of the raven washed over him, and he began to feel sick. "It smells like them!" He screeched, horrified. "It's theirs!"
Faces turned to look at him and the cats all fell into an eerie silence. After a few heartbeats it was broken by the sound of wild thrashing through foliage and the snapping of twigs, accompanied by countless paw steps thrumming on the stone forest floor. The noise grew closer with every breath. Tigerstar raised her hackles, claws sliding out to dig into the soil that was scarce within the clearing.
"It has begun!" She yowled, just as a rank of dark shapes began to tear through the thorn barrier that stood between them and the woods. "Mistclan, attack!"
