Broken (GlassMask Fanfiction)

Postby Tea_Leaf » Fri Mar 28, 2014 5:41 am

In the twisted branches of withering trees, lies a forest. A forest not made of leaves, for they are nearly gone, but a forest made of cocoons.
Small, figures that occasionally shake, with gently sleeping figures inside. It's a rare sight, these creatures. Butterfly wolves. Their species has all died out, save for this one breed. Their dark shields give them air, while hiding them from the horrors of the desolated, desecrated world in which they struggle to survive.

One day, they'll split open, and the beauties inside will shed their coats. Animals of metal will fall to the ground deftly, and sprint away quietly, in search of their delicate counterparts. Beasts with masks will burst out, their glowing blue wings beating strongly, carrying their owners high into the smoky gray sky. Green- and- gray foxes will drop to the blackened dirt, growling, and bounding away, their glows pulsing and throbbing.

And all these creatures will go and search, high and low, for the ones they were made to pursue. They will travel past the haze-coughing buildings that sit, fat and unmoving, in the world. They will run through trees, forests like their own, until they find one of unseen colors, trees adorned with the purest of greens. Here, they will rest, for they have found the ones they were destined to look after. The wolves of a broken world, with the wolves of nature and glass.

But, very few notice, in their rush to find their loves, the ones still dangling on the branches of their birth trees. Many fail to see the small dark cocoons, stuck in the air, so close to both the sky and the solid, soot-covered ground. These wolves will never grow. They are sheaths that protect a life, a small thing that aches to break out, to live. But they are trapped, defective, stunted in growth. They are stuck in their cocoons, mewling and writhing, forced to remain inside for eternity. And so they stay, alone and weeping, amongst the few others who share their plight. They will remain, vigilant, long after the remnants of the abandoned cocoons have been swept away by a poisonous wind. They will remain, even after their brethren have found their mates and felt warm love. And so they will stay, forever, with a broken heart, and a broken purpose, in a lonesome life.

But what could you expect when you live in a broken world?

This is my first GlassMask fanfiction! It's a bit brief, but I'm quite satisfied with it. c:

I'll wither,
So peel away the bark.

'Cause nothing
Grows when it is dark.

Whoa-oh-oh oh
Cover your crystal eyes
And feel the tones
that tremble down your spine.
