You’ve never been much of a social butterfly.
From the time when you were a hatchling you never were one to run off to play with friends. Instead, you would hide away and weave tales of fantasy and adventure. But the reality hit you hard one day: you would need friends, or at least acquaintances to rely on.
The heat of summer was already waning. You could feel it in the air. It had only been a week or two since the beginning of school, and there wasn’t much hope of making this year different.
The harsh truth was you were different from the others. It wasn’t something you could help either. It was just you became a little… on edge around strangers. It was perfectly normal, or at least they told you that. But they didn’t tell you that you’ll probably only ever have two friends in your whole life. They didn’t tell you the loneliness would begin to get to you, THEY didn’t tell you about the depression that followed. The very thought of it was almost enough to bring tears to your eyes.
“Are you even alive over there? I’ll come to your funeral...”
The female voice shattered your train of thought. Lana.
She was one of the two individuals you could trust. A “friend”.
“I assume you’ll be collecting my carcass then.”
Your relationship had always been littered with sarcasm and snaps, but she has always been there for you. With a deep sigh, you rest your chin on the over-polished white surface, but not for long. An outburst of laughter from behind you makes your fur stand on end. With a bounding leap, another male dragon plops next to you, black and white fur tickling your nostrils. He's still laughing as he turnes to you with a wide grin.
"Sup Cass? You'll never believe what those guys just told me! So, there was this dog, and..."
You don't even bother to listen to his exaggerated story he's been laughing at. This was Crim, the sociable character who could start a conversation with a brick wall.
"Hilarious, right?"
You shrug and begin fiddling with your mane, that is, until you saw her.
She was on the other side of the room, but undoubtedly looking straight at you. Then she was winking at you. And, oh god, now she was grinning. Your head sinks into your paws to try to hide the bright red shade your face was turning, but you can hear giggles echoing around you.
"Dude, did you see-"
"Yes, I did."
The response sounded angrier than you intended and you instantley regretted it seeing the hurt look in his eyes.
Yeah, this was going to be a long day.
Leaving was definitely a relief.
You were able to forget the awkwardness from lunch time and survive the rest of the day.
Unharmed. For now, at least.
The alley was dark and eccentric and littered with obscene graffiti, but it was the shortest was back. You nimbly slip through the twists and turns while leaping over trash cans and climbing over dumpsters until a window was visible against a backdrop of burgundy bricks.
With one swift movement you were scaling the wall using clawholds cut by yours truly.
What happened next is still a blur.
A movement from the corner of your eye caused you to jump and whirl around, losing grip on the wall. You made a couple grabs for the slit but you couldn't find it anywhere. Panic fluttered in your chest as you clawed desperately at the surface. It was no use though.
Air brushed your fur as you freefell down towards the growing surface that was the ground.
Your eyes clamped shut as you braced for impact and...
Crack!
Your wrist crumbled beneath the weight of your body and brought you to the asphalt. The pain seared in your wrist and... was it supposed to bend that way? Each breath you took was a struggle and a pinprick of pain. You could feel your vision blur, and not just from tears. Slowly, the darkness began creeping in. Before long it would dominate your vision.
The last thing you saw was a shape padding towards you.
