Note from Sandstorm: This story is true, just modified a little to incorporate what my dog would have been feeling at the time and to make it more like a story, and less like a boring history lesson c: First post – Intro, Second post – Diary, Third post – Glossary for words in bold~***~
Hello! I’m Gypsy, and this is my stupid diary. My mum, Ruby, bought me this book for my 14th whelpday and she insisted that I write a diary. I’m not too happy about it, but I suppose I should write about my not-so-happy beginning. This is not only a stupid diary now. It’s the story of my life. Gypsy’s story. A diary of Little Me.
Enjoy.

~ My Diary ~
~***~
When I was born, I was the only one. I never had any brothers or sisters. It was just me. Alone. I was a large puppy, chunky with lots of wrinkles, a sure sign that I was going to grow up to be tall. My dad was, after all, the biggest dog on our property. Mango the Mighty, they called him. Mango the giant, Mango the Meat-head. But all of the other dogs looked up to him, even Sonny, the Big Boss. But Sonny was getting old, and we needed a stronger leader. Most voted for my dad. I was so proud of him, I loved him so much. He was my only friend, besides my mum and my beloved owner. But then dad went out hunting… and never came back. I was shattered, how could this happen to me? I was only 2 months old. I missed him so much, and still do. My poor daddy. Mum was affected to; she was quiet for a long time after that. You think that was the saddest part? No, there’s more to come. ~***~
I never had any friends when I was little, but I was never truly alone. I had my parents. But, I still needed a friend around my age to muck around with. The truth is, mum could make me as grown up as I could be, but I was still a little pup. So when Trooper turned up, I was thrilled. Finally! A puppy my age that I could play with! My human’s father bought him, and put him in the puppy pen next to mine so we could get used to each other. We were instantly friends, and got along like a house on fire. When my human-girl saw we were such good friends, she picked Trooper up, and plonked him in the pen with me. We played for hours on end. They were the good days. Before… the accident. ~***~
A whole month had passed, and Trooper and I were still great friends. One day, my human-girl took us down to the dry creek to play among the tea-trees and in the sand. We were having a blast! We tore around the creek after each other, play fighting and pushing each other over. My girl was laughing so hard, I knew she was having fun watching us. So I ran a little faster after Trooper, and tried to jump over a small run off ditch. I leaped, but never landed on the other bank. I slammed into the wall of the bank, and heard a tremendous crunch as my front left leg went limp. I fell to the bottom, and tried to move, but found that I couldn’t. I laid on my side, panting. The pain in my leg was unbearable. I let out a whimper, hoping someone would hear me. There was a small stick nearby, and I started chewing on it. I whimpered again, and a little head popped over the bank. “Gypsy?” Trooper asked. “What are you doing down there?” I whimpered, “I-i-I fell. Troop, I really hurt!” I think that was when I started crying. “Gypsy!!! Trooper!!!” I heard my human-girl call us. Trooper gave me a look full of sympathy. “I’ll go get her!” He yapped. He disappeared and I heard him running to my human-girl, barking and yapping. A second later, her head and Trooper’s appeared over the side. “Come on Gypsy! What are you doing laying down there?” My human-girl asked. I whimpered and tried to get up. I howled as fiery pain shot up my useless leg. She gasped and jumped down into the ditch with me. “Gypsy!” she cried, examining me. She looked into my eyes and she knew something was wrong, and she started crying. “Gypsy! Gypsy! Oh, Gypsy! Wait here girl, I’ll go get Dad!!!” Her head disappeared, and I was left alone in the bottom of the ditch, with only Trooper for company.

Next thing I knew, I was being carried into the back of the ute. We trundled back up to the house, the pain in my leg becoming more and more unbearable. We pulled up at the front gate, and I was hurried up onto the veranda and laid on the bed outside. My human-girl's father poked, probed and prodded my leg, and I tried my best not to cry out. He shook his head, and my blood ran cold. My vision started fading, and before I lost consciousness, I saw him turn to my girl, who had tear stains running through the dirt on her face, and say, "Her leg is broken, and I don't think that there's much we can do..."~***~
