P R O L O G U E

The full moon glittered overheard as the elderly silver-coated she-cat led her Clan down to the Gathering; they were traveling slower than they had in the past, simply because her deputy had refused to set a quicker pace. In recent moons, RiverClan had been the last to arrive to the Gathering, despite their leader’s claim to being perfectly capable.

She was well past the age when most warriors would have retired and had in fact lost two deputies to retirement during her time as leader, but StarClan would not take back her remaining lives so that she might retire as well. She had, in fact, gone to the moonpool twice now in hopes of retiring, but both times she had received the same treatment. StarClan would not let the next leader step into power just yet. Did she have another part to play?

“Foxtail, the Gathering will be over before we get there if the pace is not quickened.” The once white she-cat warned, in hopes of getting her deputy to see reason and hurry their patrol on, but the tom was as stubborn as she.

“Well then, the other Clans will just have to wait.” He commented before flicking his tail towards a pair of warriors, “You two, run ahead and tell the other leaders RiverClan will arrive shortly.” He ordered, and once the indicated warriors were loping off towards the island, he fell in step with his leader, needlessly supporting her as the Clan continued on.

It seemed to take all night, but eventually the patrol made it to the Gathering, indeed the other Clans had already arrived and were mingled together. Instead of being met with hostility or outrage by their late arrival, however, the small conversations stilled as many of the cats warmly welcomed the aging she-cat. As her Clan broke away, Foxtail and her medicine cat led the RiverClan leader right up to the tree before Foxtail darted away to join the other deputies, while her medicine cat stayed at the she-cat’s side, gently prodding her leader to take a seat at the base of the tree rather than attempt to scale the trunk to the usual place of the Clan leaders.

It was only moments after the RiverClan leader had settled herself at the base of the tree, feeling significantly humiliated at having to sit beneath the tree rather than within its branches with the other leaders, that the ShadowClan leader started the Gathering. There was little to report in any of the Clans and before long it was RiverClan’s turn.

The elder lifted her muzzle confidently, spreading her jaws to inform the gathered cats that there was little to report in RiverClan, other than some apprentices being made warriors and kits being made apprentices, as well as the birth of some more kits, when her breath caught around a tightening in her chest. The only noise that escaped the aging jaws was a strangled gasp, her frail paws gave out from beneath her and she collapsed.

All at once, everything seemed to fade, as the gathered cats leapt to their paws, the leaders leaping out of the tree, deputies following suit, the medicine cats yowling for everyone to step back. Everyone was yowling her name, but the only sound that reached the elderly she-cat was the voice of one cat, whispering her name, calling her to him.

The RiverClan leader eagerly embraced the onslaught of thick blackness, as his voice grew stronger, until it seemed to be right next to her, whispering in her ear. “Not yet, Jaystar, not yet.” He whispered.
