The crate swings into motion after a few hours. Tallulah manages to pry the crate open, and we climb out. We look around in awe.
In the blinding white-hot sunshine, we are stood on top of a large pyramid of crates. The crates are being lifted off the ferry on one of those platforms secured with wire and attached to a crane.
It's like a movie, Kitty breathes as we're swung around. I nod, speechless; I've never seen a real movie, but I've read books. And this seems like a scene from a fairytale.
The crates are dumped in their neat piles on a broadwalk over the water. I can see now that we've been on a ferry.
There are dogs barking orders and yelling, waving their arms in the air. I can't understand their words- I'm guessing they're speaking Spanish. We creep away, dashing like mad until we're off the broadwalk and onto a sandy plain. We don't know whether we'd be in trouble, but it's better to be on the safe side, isn't it?
Anyway, I stood on the red-sanded plain gazing around.
Too bad we didn't end up in a seaside resort, Brandon says jokingly.
There's a town over that ridge, Moonlily says, pointing over at the edge of a cliff. Her voice is soft- and when she's angry, it grows softer.
Let's go then! Tallulah says, striding towards it, I want to see if they've got a taco bar or something. I'm starving!
Laughing, the rest of us followed.
Our feet began to make a rhythm on the sound. I counted it, then hummed. Inspiration churning in my mind, I began to sing.
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
As I walk along this dusty road,
I think of what you said when you left me alone,
All alone,
I haven't a friend in the world,
But still I'm on my feet,
I gave up everything to search for you,
People tell me I've no clue,
But I'm fine as long as I'm searching for you!
You let off,
You let me down,
Na na,
But still I search for you,
Its all I can do,
'Cause really, Baby,
There's nothing for me without you,
You're fast, Brandon comments, Y'know, coming up with things like that. Sing some more, he urges.
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
As I sail across the sea,
I think of what you've done leaving me,
Leaving me,
I haven't someone who's there for me,
But I don't care baby,
I turned my back to find you,
People tell me I've no clue,
But I'm fine as long as I'm searching for you!
You let off,
You let me down,
Na na,
But still I search for you,
Its all I can do,
'Cause really, Baby,
There's nothing for me without you,
Sing with me, I urge the others as we near the cliff. Only Kitty responds.
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
As I watch you look around,
I feel like I let you down that day,
That day,
I had no responsibility,
But I want you honey,
I came back for you,
People tell me I've no clue,
But I'm fine as long as I'm searching for you!
You let off,
You let me down,
Na na,
But still I search for you,
Its all I can do,
'Cause really, Baby,
There's nothing for me without you,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
Na, na, na, na, na, na,
People tell me I've no clue,
But I'm fine as long as I'm searching for you!
We reach the ridge as I finish. We close eyes and link hands until we're right on the edge.
Then I open my eyes.
Before me is a small town, way smaller than the place I grew up. The roads are long and dusty, and the houses are brick-and-wood shacks. It looks poor, but small children are running and laughing in the streets, adults are roaming and chatting, and as I make my way down with the others I smell the sweet aroma of mexican food.
At the bottom of the cliff, there is a small rise. At the top is an orange-and-whiet dog, looking like this:

She is wearing a white poncho and a sombrero, using a cane to help her up- but I can tell she's young, about Mama's age. When she reaches the top, she stops and looks at us, her eyes glittering playfully.
Those sparkling eyes lock on me.
Luna!
