Absinthe

Postby Shiko Hayashi » Sun Aug 12, 2012 2:37 pm

This is just the story of how I met the young Rune Dragon, still in his egg at the time, Absinthe.

And here we.... GO!

I sat on the cold white stone, hugging the mug of tea close to my chest. The frigid waters that lurked at the base of the cliff splashed violently against it's rough surface, slowly growing higher with each minute that pasted. High tide. I sighed,d shifting closer to the edge to peer down.

I had been in Maine for the last four weeks, relaxing on Maiden Island in the small cottage I occasionally rented. here were five islands total. Mink Island, Hen Island, Maiden Island, Little Crow, and Big Crow island. They were probably the most beautiful places I had ever seen. For once, my vacation actually seemed like a vacation.

But already, I was beginning to feel the sense of normalcy settling over me, warning me that I would be leaving soon. It was a heart-wrenching thought, but I tried not to let it get to me. I could always come back next year. I stood up, attempting to adjust the blanket around my shoulders. It was then that a rather large, and rather annoyed crow dive bombed me from above, swooping it's long black wings over my head and soaring back into the foggy sky. I yelped, releasing the blanket just as it went over the edge of the cliff.

Now let's pause for a second. Normally, A person would quit and just let it float away. I, unfortunately, had stupidly fast reflexes, and an even stupider thought process. Get the picture? Okay then, let's proceed.

I bolted after it, reaching out with a grabbing hand as I came to the edge. Thinking that there was one last bit of stone beneath my foot to hold, I stepped forward. Into nothingness. I yelped and tumbled down the cliff, my fingers scrabbling at the rocky wall for any purchase. My scream was silent, drawing out of my throat without a sound.
Luck must have finally decided to like me though, for within inches of hitting the frigid water, my fingers clung to a small outcropping of rock.

I swung back and forth, adrenaline pumping through my veins. As I hung there, I let out a hysterical laugh, letting it hiccup into nothingness. I winced with pain as the white stone dug into my already scraped hands. Great. Rock burn and cuts.

This was how I first came to be in my predicament. Stupid right? Well, stupid things happen. And mostly to me.

Meeting Absinthe

There were a lot of places I could of been on that fateful day that I would of enjoyed.
Hanging from a cliff was not one of them.
I swung from left to right slowly, my fingers clawing at the loose white stones that greedily dug into my hands. "Give me a break..." I growled, gripping harder and wincing as they angrily cut into my palm. It had probably only been half an hour since I had done the stupidest thing of my life and ended up hanging from a ledge. And the tide was rising two. I glanced at the foaming waters beneath me, feeling a stray sway of vertigo. I loved heights, so I was a little unprepared for it. My face drained of all color and I grimaced. Not the greatest feeling to feel.

For not the first time in my short life, I felt the slight, animalistic fear of imminent death. I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, on a cliff, with the tide slowly rising at my feet. What else was I supposed to think? Of course, at that moment, I thought of how much I had to pee. I laughed, sobbing slightly. Of all things! Authors don't mention how when scary as hell encounters happen, there's never a toilet around.

Sighing, I slumped into my body, feeling my hope slowly dwindling away. I was too tired to climb back up anymore. I wasn't a bad swimmer, but the waters were below zero. Atlantic ocean waters. The Titanic popped into my head at that moment, causing me to groan. Not the best thing to be thinking about.I needed something to focus on. Anything. Looking at anything but the water, my eyes spotted something that so out of place, I momentarily forget I was inches from a watery death. A faint, pulsating purple glow. Frowning, I shifted my weight, swinging like a pendulum as I tried to gain a better view of the object. No dice. I frowned, furrowing my eyebrow. Their had to be a way to get up there. Taking a deep breath, I searched for a foothold. There was one beneath me, but it was slowly getting covered with water. Dangerous, but my only hope of reaching the stair like rocks up to the glow.

Holding my breath, I released and fell down, my foot slipping on the wet stone. Flailing out for the rock, I grabbed onto it and scurried up the stair like rocks, breathing hard as I settled beside something warm, and hard.
Warm?
I blinked and turned to look down at what sat beside me. A large egg, probably the size of a human baby, was nestled within the crook of the outcropping, safely tucked into the darkness. I stared at it in awe, marveling at it's unique design. Of course, this didn't distract me from my immediate problem. How was I going to get out now? Sighing, I placed a hand on the egg, jumping when the glow brightened for a startling instant and I felt an intense yearning for companionship. It was then, that a young, curious voice rang through my head like a tiny bell in the morning air.

"Hey. Who are you? "

I blinked, staring at the small egg for a moment.

"Was... Was that you?"

I whispered, cautiously scooting an inch or two away from the egg. I scolded myself silently as I realized what I had done though. How much harm could an egg do? Still, I stayed still. The response came slow, as if the baby inside was struggling to think of a reply.

"Yeah...."

Was the simple, one word reply. I felt a spike of impatience, followed by a smudge of guilt. It's not like the creature knew a lot of words. It was still a baby. Much less hatched yet!

"I find that comment very rude. I might be young, but that doesn't mean I am an idiot."

Came the harsh reply. I jumped, realizing for a goofy moment that if it could project it's thoughts to her, what was keeping it from reading her thoughts? Nothing, apparently.

"Sorry. Didn't realize."

I muttered, glancing away and staring out at the rising tide. The outcropping was far enough away that the water wouldn't reach us when the tide was completely in, but that didn't save me from the small tiny fact that I still had no idea how to escape.

"When the tide's gone, it's a little easier to climb about down there. You could easily climb out of here and back up to the surface once it lowers. But that's hours from now."

The egg replied, seeming so sad for a moment.

"How long have you been ehre?"

I asked, feeling a moment of pity for the small creature. As if he could sense it, I felt a spike of irritation radiating from the egg.

"A while."

Came the snappish reply. I frowned, glaring at the egg.

"It's no use getting angry with me. Whether you like it or not, we'll be stuck together for the next 8 hours. So et used to me fast."

I growled. There was silence for a moment, my response ringing through the air. I began to feel a moment of panic, thinking that the creature inside the egg had subsided, deciding not to speak to her any more. It was then that she felt a faint warmth seeping through her fingers, the feeling of amusement evident.

"I like you. What's your name?"

The egg asked. I hurrumphed, slightly annoyed that he had made me panic, but relieved that he liked me.

"Shiko. And you are..?"

I asked, holding a hand out pathetically. It's not like it could shake it.
