Third chapter.
River-Tune
Gaze started walking. The grass was softer than any ground he’d felt before. The trees were so welcoming, and the mountains were practically saying hello. He watched the little pups wrestling and playing tug-of-war with bits of bark. It was a pleasant garden, but he wanted water. He knew there was a stream, but he didn’t know where to find it. He looked for someone to show him.
He saw a mother watching her pups. Maybe she could help him. He walked over to her, and she looked at him and smiled.
“Excuse me, where it the stream, or anywhere I can find water?” he asked her.
“Oh, a newbie! Well, kept going straight, and at the centre of this garden is a bare grass area. You’ll have to go through a thick tree circle, but you’ll hear lots of wolves near the Great Pond. Hope it helps!” She said to him nicely, and he walked away to find the centre of the garden.
Through the oaks he went, looking at wolves sleeping under trees, pups chasing each other and young wolves his age chasing birds. Then, up ahead of him, was a line of thick oaks. There were a thin path leading through them. He walked down it.
This little forest was so pleasant. Butterflies and birds hopped or fluttered across the path, and baby rabbits nibbled the grass. The sun shone through gaps in the canopy. The path wasn’t very long, and he could see the rest of the garden through the trees.
He emerged from the trees, and saw a magnificent pond. It was surrounded by rock and in the very middle of the water was a smooth stone with a big symbol on it. It was the same one pushed into the gold sheet at the entrance. What did it mean?
He stood at the edge of the trees for a moment, taking it in. Wolves were running and jumping everywhere. There were wolves young and old, just doing as they please. Like the Guardian had said, they were one. No one was fighting, no one had rivals. One as a pack. Beauran was a pack-land.
Gaze ran up to Great Pond, desperate for a drink. Lots of wolves were drinking from it, all around. He got up on a rock, and lowered his. He started lapping the water. Cold, fresh…
But there was something about this water that was different. He couldn’t work it out. It didn’t taste different – it just made him feel wonderful. Like it was enchanted.
Suddenly, a wolf come up beside him. He couldn’t see her, and the water reflection was too disturbed. She drank beside him, lapping up the water. When he was fully quenched, Gaze lifted his head from the water. Then he saw her. Pure beauty.
She was white, with Aqua-blue ears, legs and tail. Her tail was uniquely curled, and her eyes shone like sapphires. Around her neck was an emerald, and tucked in the fur near her ears was a shining blue-black feather. She held herself delicately, like an angel.
Gaze stared at her. He had never seen anything so pretty. She lifted her head from the pond and looked at him. His mouth fell open.
“Um Hello?” she said.
“Hai…” he said stupidly. Suddenly everything snapped back and he shut his mouth and stood straight. “Hello.”
She giggled. “What’s your name? I haven’t seen you before.”
“Er, my name’s Moon-Gaze. Just Gaze.” He replied.
“Are you new here?” she said.
“Yes, I just arrived.” Gaze couldn’t keep his eyes off her. “What’s your name?”
“River-Tune. Just call me Tune. I get called that a lot.” She smiled.
“Er, I don’t know anyone around here… Can I know you?” Gaze asked awkwardly. He felt a little silly.
She giggled again. “Of course! I don’t have many friends either… and the ones I have live on the other side of Beauran.” She liked him!
“Why would anyone not want to be friends with you….?” Gaze said.
“Well, my Aunt is the Alfa. I think that has something to do with it. But who cares! You can be my friend now.” She said happily. She started to walk around the pond. “I’ll take you to my parents.”
Gaze felt so pleased. He had found a friend so quick! And she was pretty. They walked around to the other side of the pond, and she started towards the other trees to the path out the other side.
“So, where did you come from?” Tune asked him.
“Well, I came from a place far from here. My pack land was a water-fall in the middle of the forest. My pack wasn’t as big as this. My father was accused of murdering the Alfa, but he didn’t, it was a rival pack. He got back from hunting with blood on his muzzle, and they thought it was him. They took him away and I never saw him again. The pack chased me away, into a storm. The next thing I knew I was in a cave with your Guardian, Stalk.” Gaze looked at the ground.
“You poor thing.” She nudged him.
“How about you?” he asked. She smiled.
“Well, I was born here, in a cave in the mountain, which is where I live now. I’ve never been on a hunting trip, but out first one’s coming up soon. You’ll be able to come!” Tune wagged her curled tail. “The hunting grounds are just outside the valley.”
“I can’t wait! I’ve never been hunting in a group before.” Tune smiled again. The kept walking down the narrow forest path. They emerged from the forest, not into a garden, but a beautiful clearing with a waterfall. It fell from the slope and splashed into a deep pool, which turned back into the stream and trickled away, into a thick forest.
The pool was amazing. On one side was a rock cliff, with an ancient oak at the top. The water-fall fell over more rocks, which turned to grass at the edge and at the top was the forest. The whole place was lovely and shaded.
“Want to go swimming?” Tune said, looking into the water. “It’s lovely in there.”
“Er, I’m not sure…” he stood up on a rock at the edge. “Maybe another – aagh!” Tune pushed him in. He splashed into the cool water, his feet touch the rocky bottom and he pushed off. His head broke out of the surface. Tune was giggling.
Gaze ducked back under. He looked up at Tune, who was still giggling. Then he pushed off, put his head up and grabbed Tune by her necklace. She tumbled into the water next to him.
“Hey!” She said, shaking her head. She laughed and ducked under. Gaze waited, then felt himself being pulled under by his tail.
They played in the water, splashing, jumping in and pulling each other under. Gaze had never had so much fun before. The water was cool and refreshing, and it was deep enough for them to swim.
After a bit, Tune started to swim to the other side. Gaze followed, wondering what she was doing. She climbed out, onto a flat rock on the side of the water-fall. The water tumbled down beside her. Gaze climbed out, and looked into the water. It was so pretty. Tune turned and started to climb a little up the rock, to another flat bit. Gaze followed, and they were halfway up.
“Come and see this,” Tune said, and ducked her head, backed, and ran behind the water fall. Surely it was solid rock behind?
“Tune? River-Tune? Are you OK?” he called. He looked over the side into where the water clashed down. Then he heard a voice from behind the waterfall.
“Gaze! I’m here! Come on! Just jump!” Gaze wondered how she did it.
Reluctantly, he ducked his head, backed, and ran at the water. He was going to trip. He was going to fall off.
A second later, his body hit the ground. The water fell down near him.
“See, you did it!” Tune came up and nudged him. He opened his eyes and stood up. He was alive! He looked around. It was a cave. A lovely, big, cave. At the door the water created a wall, and it was loud, yet friendly sounding.
“Where are we?” Gaze asked, still looking around.
“My secret cave. I used to come here with my brother. He’s older than me, and is training to be a guard of the Alfa. I think only we know about it. I just wanted to show you.” She smiled.
“A secret cave. This is lovely.” Gaze walked to the back. It was so cosy, and about the same size as Stalk’s cave. Except it had no secret exits.
“Hey, do you want to try and jump off that high bit into the water?” Tune said, walking back to the entrance.
“Er, I’m not good with heights. Show me first. Like you have for everything today.” Gaze said. Tune giggled. She backed, and leapt out of the cave onto the rock beside. How did she do it so easy. Gaze could do going in, but not out.
He braced himself, shut his eyes and ran at it. He felt water touch his side, which put him off balance. His feet hit the rock, but one slipped. He was about to fall, and there was nothing he could do. He pushed his feet onto the cliff and leapt. Down, down. He flipped over and went head first. He closed his eyes again, waiting for impact, then splash. He plunged into the water below. He looked around in the water holding his breath. He had just fallen off a cliff into water. That was something.
Gaze let himself sink to the bottom, before using all his might to rocket to the surface. He broke the water, coughing. He’d never been under so long. Coughing, he started to swim to the other side.
Tune ran down the side of the cliff, on the grass, and got to the water’s edge. She stood there, waiting for Gaze to come.
“Gaze! Are you OK!” she said, as his feet touched the bottom and he started to walk up.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. I’ve never done that before!” He replied, shaking himself off.
“I was worried you were going to drown!” she said, starting to walk off. Gaze walked beside her. “I think the original idea was to jump, not fall.” She said, shaking her head.
“Yeah, well I thought that too, until I did fall.” Gaze laughed.
“Well, we should probably get to my parent’s now. Let’s go.” They walked for a bit, into the forest. Suddenly, Tune leapt forward, and started sprinting ahead.
“Hey!” Gaze raced after her. She ran through the trees, dodging them like an athlete. Her tail uncurled as she went ever faster. He caught up and ran alongside her. She looked at him, smiled cheekily, and kept running. Gaze started to pant.
He looked at her. She looked back. Then, all of a sudden, she pushed him with her nose, leapt forward, and jumped clean over an enormous log in front of her. Before he could realise what was there, Gaze tripped, rolled over, and hit his head on the log.
“Ow!” he said. He got up, shook, and ran around it. Tune was just a few paces in front of him. “You – are - so - fast!” he panted. She laughed, leaping to dodge every tree in front of her.
As the two of them tore through the forest, rabbits and birds jumped and fluttered from their path. Their feet pounded on the forest floor. Tune seemed like she could run for miles. Gaze, who hadn’t run so fast, galloped along behind.
Suddenly, Tune slowed down, her tail re-curling and her ears going forward again. Gaze slowed behind her. He walked up beside her. In front of them was the stream, and a big log over it.
“Come on, lets go.” Tune said. She climbed onto the log, and trotted over. She stopped at the end, and turned to face gaze. “Well, come on!”
“OK.” Gaze climbed onto the moss-covered log, and walked slowly across. Tune leapt off onto the grass on the other side. She shook herself off and sat down. Gaze made his way to the end, and leapt onto the soft grass. It was comfortable on his tired feet.
He too sat down and panted. Tune yawned. “How can you run so fast?” Gaze asked her.
“My father was a good hunter. He had to run for miles just to get a meal. Nowadays there are heaps of deer and rabbits and birds in the hunting grounds. It doesn’t take a huge hunting group to catch one any more.” She said, getting up again.
“Do we have to?” Gaze whined. She nodded and rolled her eyes. He got up and followed her. This part of the forest was very grassy, and full of very old trees. There were also less of them.
“We’re nearly home. Just through this part of the forest, and we’ll be there.” They trotted through the trees, listening to the silence of the forest. Then Gaze saw something on the ground. It shone out in the patch of sunlight it was sitting in. White. Bright white.
“Tune, come and see this.” He said, still looking at it. She stopped and turned.
“What?” she asked, walking up behind him.
“Look. I think it’s a tooth,” Gaze sniffed it. Tune had a sniff too, and nudged it.
“Oh wow it is! And it’s a wolf’s tooth. But it’s so big. You should wear it around your neck. It would suit you!” She picked it up in her teeth. She nodded in the direction they were going and Gaze followed her.
