Chapter 1: A Dream
So bright were the lights when they hit my eyes, I had to shield them. Cheers roared in my ears and fans whooped as we marched out of the entrance to the dungeon below the bleachers. When my feet came across the grass turf, I lowered my arms and starred at the crowd across from me. My shoulders were broadened with the padded gear for the Lake Monster football team in Ohio.
Fans cheered us on as we marched to our side of the field and took our standing positions in front of the benches. Being the only girl on the team, I was nervous. It was my first game with this new and strange football team in a new town that I had never known before. Practice had been easy enough, but the actual opponents we faced seemed to want to tear me apart.
“All right there, Catalina?” Chuck, the captain of the football team, asked me as he turned to face me. Chuck had been the nicest teammate so far, and always tried to make me comfortable. All I could do was smile to him.
“Don’t you worry about me big C! This wouldn’t be my first go around,” I told him with a wink and the biggest smile I could manage. He smiled back and so did some of my other teammates. They all had been informed of my previous high school football career in Oregon, and from what they had seen in practice, they new I was tough and couldn’t be moved easily (one of the major reasons why I was a lineman!).
I stood 6’3 at full height, had broad shoulders, and weighed 215 pounds soaking wet, I guess you could say I’m not your average girl! My hair was cropped to shoulder length and died black with orange and blue streaks throughout it, and I had a curved figure with chiseled facial features. Most of the guys on the team said I was a catch, I didn’t believe them.
The referees blew the whistle and the four captains for each team started out across the field to shake hands and toss the coin to see who gets kick off! Chuck, smiling his crooked grin, kept his blond hair hiding his gorgeous blue eyes as he called heads. He was strong built in the chest and shoulder region with a slender waist and square jaw (What? I like the guy, so sue me!).
When the coin landed on heads, the crowd cheered and we got into our positions quickly. Our kicker stood at the ready, and once he was sure the rest of the team was ready for him to kick, he ran up to the ball and pulled his leg back in one swift motion, making the ball sail to the other side of the field. Smirking, my teammates plowed through the defense that the other team had created to protect the runner, and took the runner down with a team effort made by Jace and Mike, the twin brutes.
As soon as things settled down and the position of the ball had been determined, the two teams lined up on the ball. I had the honor of being on starting defense (lucky me right?) and I took my position up as the left defensive tackle, right next to Jace, who smirked at me, knowing I could take on at least three of the thugs in front of me (how awesome is that?). Stretching out my arm, I placed the tips of my fingers down on the grass gently and balanced myself between my arm and my legs that I had spaced out perfectly underneath of me.
Once the ball was hiked, I launched into the air and rammed my shoulder into the guy’s chest in front of me and stopped dead in my tacks as I looked at the rest of my teammates. Werewolves! They were all werewolves!
I jumped up in my bed screaming as sweat rolled down my brow. “Calm down, it was just a nightmare,” I repeated to myself as I hugged the blankets around me. But it was so real! If I tried, I could have reached my hand out and ran the soft fur of Jace through my fingers! I thought starring at the horse-patterned sheets covering me. Lights turned on in the hallways and my brother rushed in.
“What in the world is going on in here?” he asked me, as he looked me up and down to make sure I was ok.
“Just a bad dream Bret.” Bret starred at me in disbelief. He was in nothing but his “got milk?” boxers
