Chapter Three
An Unbearable Decision
Tear's ran down Lee's face as she smothered what little belongings she had in a dusty old backpack. She didn't want to go with the couple, whom she soon figured out was the Quints. Joe sat on the bed next to her backpack. His face was solemn and dry.
"Listen Lee," he said suddenly, "The buttsniff's are just a distraction. You need to focus on our plan."
Lee nodded, tears still streaming.
Then Joe added softly, "Do you remember all of it?"
Lee nodded again, she didn't trust her voice.
"Okay," Joe wavered.
"I don't know how I can leave you," Lee said weakly.
"You're not leaving for that long," Joe said with a small smile.
"But you should have heard the director's voice, she said that you and I were just... just..."
"I know."
"She threatened me Joe," Lee whispered, "She said if I didn't go that something worse would happen, she said if I tried anything..."
"It's okay Lee," Joe tried to comfort her, "Just stick to the plan."
Joe stood up and hugged her. Lee buried her head in his thin shoulder.
She took a deep sigh, tugging on a piece of Joe's dark blonde hair she said, "Get a haircut."
Joe surpressed a smile, lightly tugging her equally blonde hair back said, "Likewise."
"Here," Lee said, wiping the tear's off of her face, "Before I forget." Lee handed Joe a small sphere that was slightly larger than a quarter. Joe took a long look at it. Shaking it, Lee and Joe watched the flakes of fake snow whirl around the words, LOVE.
"A worker here said he found it in my file," Lee said to Joe, "I figure our parents must've left it for us or something."
Lee never bothered trying to learn the names of the workers here. They came and went so fast, she just soon forgot all about them. The only worker she did remember was that man. Nick, was his name. He got sick and had to leave though.
"Here," Joe said to Lee, shoving a folded piece of paper into her hand, "It's the plan, so you don't forget."
Lee nodded. They then walked down to the first floor where Lee would leave with the Quints.
Lee looked out the window as Joe and the director got smaller and smaller away, I love you! she thought.
I love you to, Joe thought back, right into her mind.
