The Last Ones : An Exciting Sci-Fi Novel by SecretsLive

Postby SecretsLive » Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:27 pm

Summer of 2010
The faint scarlet light filtered through the smooth milky white clouds. A pink glow penetrated the clean black road. The large golden sun dipped into the warm sky above. White and black cows spread across the vast green fenced-in feild. They grazed happily, young calves bounded around playfully. Seven bicycles rolled down the cheerful path. Everything was well, for now.

Winter of 2011
Darkness comsumed the cold evening air, leaving the earth still and vonerable. Thin sheets of rain barreled down from the black sky with an odd force for such weather. A long stale yellow object came noisily through the unseatling vehicle. A school bus. Six children clambered off of the machine to be greeted by the storm. They dashed towards the nonmobile trailer that rested on the large plot of land which was now flooded with chilling rain. The children stripped from their thick jackets and removed their foot wear. They all scattered - some going to the kichen or the living room, which were both joined. Only a few thick boards that were connected to the ceiling and floor remained of what had been the wall. I sat at the kichen stool, watching them fold clothes, eat, or whatever activities they may be doing. I listened to the constant chatter that rambled out of their mouthes, along with mine, which was more energetic than other times. We were all cheerful and giggling, except for the eldest, a beautiful teenage girl who had apparently just woke from her regular nap at the back of the bus, and was grumpier than usual. Although she wasn't in her best mood, she slowly regained to her playful self and joined in on the fun.
I found myself conversing more with the second eldest, a devilish young 7th grade boy, David. We were mainly having a playful, yet bickering argument over, well, who knows what. I quickly strayed from the subject to confront Kylie- the oldest -who I immaturally let stuff my mouth with the many tiny slices of a small, dark, sour orange fruit in a childish manner. The three of us all began to laugh as I managed to scarf down the fruit that made my cheeks swell. Although I had to hold my head over the trash to conseal the spirting juice that was exiting my lips, it was worth it, and a wonderful joke. I knew that I may have choked to death, but I didn't, and that's what really matters, right?
Although, soon enough our fun had to come to a halt when the mother of the crowded house began to throw orders around. David had been told to walk one of the family's dogs, Brute, the smallest of the three k-9s, a beagle mix who's very excited to explore. Obediantly he did as he was told. I decided to come along, as well as Waid, Shamma, and Minerva. Waid was the youngest, a 3 or 4 year old boy. Shamma, the second youngest, a cute blonde girl in 1st grade. And Minerva, a 3rd grade girl, the 3rd youngest.
It took a bit of a struggled to manage and get a bicycle that suited my needs. I finally ended up with an old orange bike without handle cushions or front brakes. I guided the bike along the road, stopping at the top of the small slope at the end of the property. I hadn't noticed intil then that the rain had calmed and the sun still gave us an errie grey glimmer to see. Although, the light would not last long, so we hadn't wasted much time.
Shamma and I were in the lead, being on bikes that we could control. David was also on a bike, a small bike that only Shamma could manage to actually ride. The bike had been mine, a small purple bike with little white training wheels, I had named 'her', Niara. David held the leash of Brute, who was romping along, his pink tounge rolling out of his black lips. Tacker, the largest, yet youngest dog was racing along with us. He was a large, strong germand shepard with long legs built for running. Bo, the old german shepard, tried to tag along, but was left behind, forced to retreat back to the house. Minerva and Waid were in the back, side by side, walking together.
As we approached the top of the hill Shamma and I had to stop yet another time to wait for the others. I looked back at David, he gave the signal to move on, it was just a simple hand gesture urging us forward. I gave my young biking partner a quick glance murmuring the words,
"..Ready?"
She gave a swift nod and we were off. The orange and pink bicycles sped down the hill with tremendous speed for the beat up bikes. I struggled to keep the handle bars straight as they trembled wildly. I gripped the bike tightly, using all my strength to keep in still. I squinted as bursts of freezing air made strong contact with my face. I found myself looking around, although I had been there many times, like in the summer, it seemed strange. The scene seemed unfamiliar and intimidating. Everything seemed too quiet and empty. No cars had passed, and I soon relized that not a single cow had entered the field. A cold chill ran down my spine, I looked back to see everyone far behind me. It was as if they had halted in their tracks, too struck with fear to move forwards. Just as the thought came to my mind I heard the startling words of my cousin. It was David. He was speaking to both me and Shamma, the words were hard to hear from the far distance that he stood.
"Guys! Come here! Now! Shamma! Layla! Come here! NOW!"
The urgency in his voice was unmistakable, he imediatley turned and lunged forward of his tiny bike. I looked at Shamma and shrugged, we both turned and began to pedal furiously towards them. As I looked forward I couldn't help but notice he was going much slower than the others. If he wanted to, he could have outran all of them and been at home before we knew what was going on.
When we finally caught up he was glancing all around with wide eyes, I had never saw so much dread in his eyes before. He stood from that little bike, and lept over it. He raced straight towards little Waid and ripped him from the ground. He dashed forwards, carrying his brother with him as he screamed frantically for us to come. Knowing that I'd be much quicker on the bike now that we were on top of the hill, I stayed on. I though about grabbing Niara, but I didn't, I only kicked the bike to the side of the road to avoid any wrecks and pedalled after them.
The darkness seemed to be consuming the day and the forest was thribing with wild sounds and creepy noises. I saw that David continuously kept looking back, but when he got close enough to the house he went full speed and didn't hesitate. Shamma and I charged down the road, a bit past the house to the garage where he threw are bikes and started quickly towards the house. Minerva, Tacker, and Brute beat us to the house. I leapt into the house, Shamma following. I watched silently as David was screaming all kinds of nonsense and things I couldn't comprehend. My gaze followed him as he ran outside for the last time, only to come back carrying Bo in his arms. When everyone relized that something bad was happening, something that only their mother, Julie, David and Kylie could understand Shamma began to shreik that they had to get the bunny who was outside in a cage. Everyone began to protest against her, so, undoubtfully she began towards the door only to be stopped by David. He slammed the door shut, locking it behind him.
I began wondering what could possibly be so terrible, then I relized that whatever we were hiding might get my mom, or one of my pets. I figured that whatever it was had only invaded the country side.. For now. I tried to absorb any bit of information I could hear through the jabbering jaws of the seven people. I looked out the window to see nothing but blackness, night had set in finally, although it was only 5:00. That thought sent chills down my spine, this was when my mother would pick me up. Would that unknown danger find her? I took a step closer and yelped the frightening words,
"What about Mom!?"
This made everyone silent, Julie sighed, along with a few others. I knew that was bad sign, would they not save her aswell? A million thoughts were buzzing in my mind which was already foggy and confuzed due to all the comotion that seemed to trap me. All at once everyone began to talk again, soon everyone scattered as they did when they arrived at their home. I watched in utter confusion as they began to do their jobs. I shuffled along, trying to figure out what was going on, and what everyone was doing. I tiptoed towards Julie before she could move and asked her what was going on and what I should do.
"Well, Shamma and Minerva are finding clothes and a few games.. Katrina's finding food.. David is boarding up the windows. And me and Kylie are blocking the doors. You can help Katrina find food." She replied, her voice seemed quieter than usual, in fact the whole house seemed to be at a whisper.
"Yeah, but why?" I asked. "What's going on?"
She took a deep breath and whispered, "Layla, something very dangerous is going to happen and we have to prepare, now. I don't have time to explain."
"..but what about Mom?" I cry in a shrill voice, still unaware of what was happening.
She just let out another sigh and walked towards Kylie to move the TV in front of the front door. I walked uneasily down the hall, trying to find Minerva and Shamma. I soon found them rooting through their closet, taking out any clothes that they found and throwing them into bags with their names written sloppily with either crayon or pencil. I quickly relized that they were organizing their clothes into the proper bag, which was a very large paper bag. When they finished stripping their room of all their clothes they started on Julie's room. I guided myself into the kichen where I began to help Katrina load all their food into a bag and lay the bags at the top of the basement steps.
Once we were finished we went to the back of the house where everyone's room was. We grabbed all the valuables, toys, and books that we could dig out. We put them in the same place as the food, along with the few clothes bags. We soon had all the rooms clear of their neccesidies. We bundled all the blankets, coats, and other winter items into a bag with foot wear. Once David finished boarding the windows and the doors were properly guarded he grabbed weapons, knives, guns, everything dangerous.
When everything was finished we took the bags and the animals to the basement. We guarged the steps with a wall of common house-hold items like the couch and refridgerator. We sat on blankets with all the bags by the wall and looked nervously at each other. I was the first to speak,
"What's going on? How will Mom get here? She'll be coming soon! What about Dixie and the other pets?" I asked in a frantic tone.
Julie answers is a protective voice, "There are very dangerous creatures, almost like zombies, but dog-like. They can turn humans into them and they will keep spreading through the town.. Eventually the world.. Probably.." she starts, "Your mother will know what is happening, she knows what to do and how to get down here. She'll get you and you two will go home to get your things. We'll eventually all leave."
I heard Shamma's voice croak, ".. But it's only a week till Christmas.."
"Don't worry, we'll still have Christmas. We'll be able to get a few things along the way, if we can out-run the... diesease.." Julie says, her tone softening.
Just then, a scrape makes us all freeze. We hear footsteps just outside the walls of the secured basement. A sound like a blade errupts from the floor beside the furnace, my mom comes crawling from a hole in the cement. I imediatley jump up, helping her to her feet. I scream her name over and over, hugging her repeatedly. Although she hugs me back, she goes right back to the topic.
"Layla, listen to me, honey. Me, you, and Kylie are going to go to the house and get the stuff and come back. We'll go from there.." Mom's voice trails off.
I nod, saying that I understand. The three of us slide down the cement hole to come out at the rocky driveway where the big white explorer was parked. We jump in without slowling down. The car lets out a firey roar and before I know it we're bolting down the road. I'm consantly survalencing out the window to check for any of the unearthly beings, although all I see is a suspicious pair of glowing gold eyes. I convinced myself that they were nothing more than a deer's cowardly eyes, but I knew it was more than that.
We were soon in the house, temperarily safe and far from the deisease, but from what I could tell, it spread fast. We followed the same routine shown at my aunt's house, gathering all the things in bags and suitcases and loading it all in the far as fast as possible. We were already making our way back to her house. I was stroking the golden retriever who was in the back seat the entire time, her name was Dixie. The four cats were all in two cat carriers, two in each. The lizard, Dutchas, had to stay at home, we were unable to take the entire tank with us. We left her with an endless supply of food and water, although we knew she would die soon either way. We wrote a quick note on both doors, several places in the house, and even recorded the message on the phone explaining everything.
When we made it to Julie's house everybody raced to the van and we threw everything into the large trunk. The van sped down the road, hopefully to go far away from the deserted place. We managed to actually take the bunny and the two guinni pigs. Although, the poor lizard Dutchas was at my house to be deiseased.. I would have took her if I cough have, but she required special lighting and heating. So, I decided to let her ge tinfected quickly, rather than to slowly freeze to death in the dark. Yet, she's still alone, I'd much rather die with people I know, then to die alone. She's a lizard. It doesn't matter. I tried to tell myself that, but it didn't work very well.

"What's going on?" I interupted in a conserned tone. "..really."
Julie let out a sigh, "Listen, some really scary dogs are coming and we have to go."
I leaned back in my seat in defeat, my dirty blonde hair bouncing on my shoulders. I continued to listen to the conversation even though I was a bit hurt by the rather rude remark.
"We'll have to get to the border of New York and PA." Mom states, "They'll probably figure out by then, most of the evacuation will probably be by New York.. Or maybe they'd take us to a smaller state, so the chances of more people getting infected isn't as bad.."
"It'll probably be on the news by the time we reach Altoona." Kylie suggests, her voice shaking with dread, but her mind was full of helpful thoughts.

The car pulled into a large lot, Mom and I were the ones who got out of the car. I followed her to a big familiar white building which was decorated with a large glass window that held a display case containing a row of boxy black televisions. A small crowd was already formed around it, I managed to push through the crowd. I wiped off the mist with my sleeve and pressed my forhead against the cold glass. I peered through the window at the dusty old TV which broadcasted about the 'alein-zombie dog' attack. We were all ordered to go to Harrisburg where we would be evacuated. Although, the entire state was not going, just Altoona area. We shuffled through the sleet that was coming down hard now, we hoped into the van and we were speeding towards the evacuation site.

I listened to the frightening sound of my strong heart beat, the pace was faster than it had ever been. My chest burned, my throat was tight and aching. My back leaned against the hard, cold wall of the small corner. I prayed that nobody would see me behind the row of silver trash cans. My throat tightened, my stomach gripped with fear. A heart stopping scream came from only a few yards away, I nearly jumped, but my body was trapped in a coma of fear. A few moments passed and all was silent, I shifted helplessly to the side. I peered through the slim gap left inbetween two of the bins.
As soon as I saw the dark red pool of liquid laying across the dull rocks, I turned away. Beneath me was an endless blanket of the jadded grey stones, I carefully picked one up. My hand shook wildly, as if the small rock's force was too great for my to lift. I dropped the pebble to the ground, it landed with a faint clash against the others. My heart skipped a beat, I nervously swiped the few strands of dark hair that were glued to my forehead with sweat. I stared straight ahead, through the gap I saw a large silvery figure. I looked away, moving my entire head along with the motion. I froze where I was, but knew it wouldn't work. I held my breath, my stomach ached with tension.
Just ahead I heard complete silence, after a second of brief movement. I gentley closed my eyes as I listened to the crunch of the colorless gravel beneath. I opened my eyes slowly, fearful of what may be in front of me. My mouth opened slowly, I nearly screamed, but no sound came out except for a short breathless sound.
I stared in front of me at two black souless eyes followed by a long snout filled with two rows of dagger-like fangs, guided by a strong muscular jaw. The dark silvery creature exhaled deeply, it's hot sour breath entered my nostrils. I heard more movement from behind the bins, two larger beasts lunged out from behind the creature which I was face to face with. I forced myself to swallow dryly, which made the creatures shift unseatlingly. I slowly, and unnoticably, reached my hand down. I felt around as quickly as possible without letting them notice, and grabbed the largest rock I could reach. I moved my fingers along the edges, sharp.
In one swift movement I swung my clenched fist at the creature, puncturing it's thick leathery skin around it's chest. I watched breifly as deep red-black liquid oozed from the opened cut. I leapt quickly to my feet, darting away as quickly as possible, taking the weapon with me. My legs moved as fast as I could make them go. Over my pounding heartbeat I could heart the sound of their claws scraping against the rocky rock behind me. My outstretched arms reached out, grasping things and throwing them behind me. For a breif moment I found myself looking back at the snarling creatures as I ran. I looked forward, going a bit faster now that my vision was straight. My arms lunged out in front of me, grabbing the thin ladder which was connected to the brick building.
I struggled to trash up the wobbly ladder. The vishous animals tried to climb up the. Although, the monsters were unsucsessful, they continued to try. They were unknowing that their furious struggle was shaking the ladder. I tightened my grip on the bars, pulling myself up to the next rung. As I made my way towards the last bar, it broke. The thick silvery object just snapped in half, leaving my arm to fly back, landing limply at my side. My heartbeat pounded in my throat, my entire body shook with fear.I could hear the click of metal under me. The sound replayed at the back of my head. I despirately struggled to hoist myself onto the roof of the fairly tall building.
I threw myself onto the cold cement roof. I landed hard on my side, my body ached, but I managed to stand. I ran across the smooth surface, constantly alert of the creatures racing behind me. My eyes darted around as I bolted forward, my gaze soon fell on a gaping square hole. Without thinking, I lept into the hole. My sneakers landed with a thud into a dark ominous room. I glanced wildly around, the creaters were at the opening in the ceiling above. I dove towards the floor, my body slamming agaisnt the cement. I tilted to the side, letting myself roll under a gap in a pile of wooden rubble. I could make out a broken desk and a piano, but that was all.
I lay frozen in fear on my side, my heart gripped in my throat. I watched silently as the silver leather skinned dog-like creatures leap to the hard floor with a click of their always unshealthed claws. I held my breath, sweat beating on my face. The large animals sniffed around without any luck. The largest and most muscular one, the beast which confronted me first let out a loud hissing howl. The other two let out smaller yowls, then they jumped onto some other rubble and leapt through the gap in the ceiling.
I sat up after a few moments, they were definatley gone. I crawled out of the clever hiding spot to be swallowed by darkness. I stood, the only light now was the thin line of light from through the square hole above. Trying to mimic the creatures movements I crawled over a mass of tangled metal and hard wood, trying to reach the only known exit. I leaned upwards on my tip toes and extended my arms above me, barely grasping the edge of the opening. I leapt up, throwing myself onto the roof with much struggle.
I looked around, the sun was starting to sink into the dark flaming red sky. I quickly got to my feet, I jogged towards the edge of the roof and began to climb down the ladder, after making sure there wasn't any sign of danger. Once I got to my feet I began to walk home, but was halted by a brutal tackle to the ground. The creature stood over me, it's jaws at my neck. The animal put more and more force intil it peirced my skin, drawing the slightest drop of blood that drew in the whole pack. The largest brute stalked towards me, his muscels bulged under his tight silver skin. He turned, his familiar golden eyes glowed like headlights in the thick fog. He lunged towards me, taking my throat in hiss jaws and shaking wildly. He threw back his head in a evil twisted victory cackle, he leaned in close to me. The stench of his hot breath stained his lips as he snarled, his deadly jaws only inches front my face. The creature uttered the raspy words,
"Wake up.."

I jolted awake, only to be blinded by flares of yellow and white light. My heart was thumping wildly in my throat which was tight with fear, my shirt was damp with sweat. I looked in front of me to see Katrina, once my vision had cleared from the old foggy pattern that blocked my view.
"Wake up!" she shrieked for the final time, looking as if she was about to slap me.
"..I-I'm awake, I'm awake.." I groaned, my voice still shakey and dry from the slumber.
"Good." she said in a clear voice, the oppisite of my groggy mutter. "We're already in Harrisburg, you have to come, quick. The news said the 'deisease' is already spreading into Huntington!"
I gasped, it would soon be in Altoona. Where would Nana, Dad, and the rest of my family go? Were they aware of what was happening? Would Nana believe the shock?
"Layla! Come on- now! Get up, day dreamer!" she ordered, her voice high with a hint of impatience.
I groaned once again as I heaved myself up, and out of the seat which had been sprawled across. I looked around frantically, relising we were the only ones left in the van. Katrina assured me they were in line along with at least ten thousand other people. I jumped in the line with Mom, my heart still racing.
The line seemed endless, the noise was unbearable, and the wait was like walking away from a serial killer! Although, just like the long lines at the bathroom we finally got our turn.
