Chapter Two
High School
Lee felt jittery as she walked into the math class.
Your first class, she thought to herself,
Don't blow it. Then she remembered that Joe could hear her and blushed. Joe looked over at her but said nothing. That's something that she loved about Joe, she didn't have to say any of her problems out loud but he still heard. The thing that she loved was that he could relate to most of it. They had grown up together. Known each other forever. Lee knew that he was her brother, and she loved him alot, but sometimes she could feel him watching her. That was one of the few times that Lee could not hear his thoughts. When she couldn't hear her brothers thoughts, Lee felt... empty, cold, like it wasn't him. She felt like he was hiding something. Not being able to read what it was made Lee feel powerless, scared, and angry.
School... school... school... Lee tried to remind herself,
Focus on school. It's not like she needed to, she could just read the teachers mind and get all A's. But if she gets too hyper with reading minds, she starts to not be able to block anything out, she starts hearing the whole
worlds thoughts. Joe helps her. He does what he calls
frying to her brain. Lee doesn't know how he does it, he just wipes the thoughts away. But if he does it when she's not having one of these drives, it gives her a burning sensation... like a brain freeze. Joe doesn't like hurting her, so he try's not to do it recklessly.
The teacher wasn't in the class just yet.
"Hi!" A bubbly girl beside her said.
I wish I had blonde hair, the girl thought. Lee couldn't help it, she heard her.
"But brown hair is pretty!" Lee blurted.
"What?" the girl said surprised, "How did you-"
"I mean..." Lee faltered, school isn't even five minutes in and she said something she wasn't supposed to.
That's just what all people say, Lee heard in her mind. Joe came to the rescue.
"That's just what all people say," Lee voiced Joes words, "You know, wishing for my hair color." Lee smiled at her.
"Oh," the girl said flatly, "Well I'm Yasmin."
"Lee."
Just then the teacher walked into the classroom. As he got started she saw a note on her desk,
Is that your brother?Lee looked at where Yasmin quietly pointed two desks behind her where Joe sat.
Sure. Lee heard in his mind.
Yes. Lee wrote this on the paper and passed it back to Yasmin.
He's cute! Yasmin replyed.
Sick. Joe thought to her.
Ugh! Lee heard the teacher think as he strode over to her desk. Lee tried to shove the piece of paper in her jacket pocket but the teacher ripped it from her hand.
"Passing noted are we Miss Newman?"
"No," Lee murmured under her breath.
"What's that?" The teacher asked with a tone.
"No sir," Lee said louder.
Jerk. Lee heard Joe think. As the teacher walked back up to his desk Lee looked out the window. She saw a bird looking intently at her.
That bird isn't looking at me is it? Lee thought
Of course not. Lee heard Joe. But she couldn't be sure if Joe's tone was reassuring or worried.
