I have several ideas for novels I'd love to write, however, I'm finding it difficult to start. I have a few pages of beginnings I wrote, but didn't like. Any thoughts on the beginnings I've written so far?
As he searched, his movements became more frantic. Several shelves of books lay at his feet in stacks, none of them the book he was searching for. No, the one he wanted was small, only the size of his palm and barely as thick as a deck of playing cards. It was bound in rough leather and smelled musky, like it had accidentally gotten wet and then had never quite dried the whole way. It was key to everything. To his past and future. However, he wasn’t the only one who wanted answers.
The sound of breaking glass stopped him. He turned around sharply only to spot the broken plant pot at the young boy’s feet. Soil and broken terracotta were scattered across the dark wooden floor, while the tiny tulip plant, the one that had been in the pot and was barely beginning to bud it's first flower, lay at the boy's feet.
In the end it didn’t matter. Everything he tried to so hard prevent. Everything destiny had told him it was his job to protect was crumbling at his feet. There was only one road he could take now and it lead west. Away from the place and people he’d been chosen to defend. Stooping down he picked up what was left of his red hooded jacket and started to walk, west.
The upbeat pop track on the car radio contrasted greatly with the scene at the side of the road. Fields of tall, yellowed grass and loose dirt seemed endless as they eventually blended into the horizon. Occasionally they’d past a small farm or two, with wire fence and grazing horses or cows.
The entrance to the tunnel was her only way out, yet she had no intentions of going back the way she’d came. Darkness surround Harlow on all sides, except for a small torch that lit the ground in front of her to prevent her from tripping over the jagged rocks on the cavern floor.
Typically if you are struck by lightning, the chances of you surviving are pretty low, however today that was the only reason for me to get out of bed at six-thirty in the morning, even though I had no school to attend.
Vivian stood looking at her endless curls of bright red hair, in the crack glass of her vanity mirror. The one her brother had salvaged from the trash on her tenth birthday. She wore a short, yet elegant yellow dress and a pair of dark leather gladiator sandals. Normally she wouldn't have been dressed so formally, however today was different, today was the day of the sorting.

Edit: Wow, this thread is popular. :O
Yeah, that is weird. I think describing someone liked this:
"He had short spiky blond hair that sometimes flopped over his steely blue eyes. The sun reflected off his silver necklace, tucked underneath a green striped sweater." is too long. Of course, it is new information, but it feels long.
On the writing preference, I use the computer and write by hand, but most of my writing is on my iPod.

These two are my favorite beginnings. The first one has me wondering of what importance this plant is, and of course who the boy and the main character are. [Though you do repeat 'young boy' twice and it sounds a bit repetitive.] The second one is interesting since it offers a description of the main character without dumping an overload of details on the reader. Of course I'm left wondering what the sorting is as well.
In the end it didn’t matter. Everything he tried to so hard prevent. Everything destiny had told him it was his job to protect was crumbling at his feet. This is my least favorite beginning. It's too climatic right off the bat, and doesn't provide the reader with much insight to anything that is or will be happening in the story.

Subject: { INKLINGS } A Thread For WritersLilysplash wrote:amber. wrote:Kirarya wrote:Question for you all: do you have a preference when it comes to writing on paper vs a computer?
I prefer writing on the computer much more. I type unbelievably faster than I write, therefore it allows me to organize my thoughts quicker and efficiently. I tried my hand at pencil and paper. It wasn't terrible but I found that I'd lose my train of thought before I finished writing the previous sentence. It does work but I definitely prefer my laptop. I also find it nicer for critiquing/sending drafts to people and such. It saves the time of having to type it up and it allows for ease of mistakes and fixes.
Yes, I prefer typing. This is mostly because of be absolutely horrible handwriting. I can barely read it! Typing can also help me learn, for some reason, even if I'm a kinetic learner... Also, it's easier for edits, whereas on paper, you have to erase it all and rewrite.
Computer, definitely. If I write something down, I feel like its open for anyone to read, just sitting on my desk. And I'm very hesitant to let anyone read my writing. >.< whereas on the computer, I save it on my account and log out and (since I share a computer with my sister) no one can see it. And it's easy to delete if I figure out that it's complete crap. XD and, of course, it's faster and easier to read and edit.
And, I'm an environment nut. I stray away from using paper for anything but schoolwork, and even then I use minimal space on paper to use less. {{ I plan on either being something to do with the environment or a writer when I grow up. c:
@iStorm - cool username c: I prefer your first opening. It drew me in more than the others did, wondering about the importance of this book and why he seems to frantic to find it. Good luck with your story!

Computer, definitely. It's a bajillion times faster, I can edit and shift around pieces of writing more easily, and I get hand cramps when I write for too long anyway.
Besides, my handwriting is near-illegible when I'm in a rush.

welcome to inklings, revvie! c: I'm nutella, but you can call me nut. I'm jealous of your pet moose.
Anyway, I have a question for y'all. :3 what genre do you tend to read/write in? I like fantasy and mythical stories, but I'm crap at writing them. >.< I tend to write in realistic settings, just ordinary people thrown into strange situations. c: thoughts?

Same here! I love reading fantasy-it's always been my favorite-I just can't seem to write it. I think everything I've written would fall under realism. Perhaps it's easier for me to identify with the characters and their conflicts more?

oh yes. everyone is jealous of my pet moose
i love realistic fiction, mainly young adult /teen. i absolutely adore books about the future of earth, stuff like that. i love to write supernatural things, but mostly romance. every single story i write has a ton of romance in it cx
and i always write on a computer, then when i finish with editing and everything, i type it all up on my typewriter and store it in my writing binder. i can't stand writing on paper; i get crazy hand cramps and my writing isn't nearly as fast as my brain is, which means i have 10x more editing to do

You have a typewriter? That's way cool! I really want to get one but my parents think it's ridiculous.
It appears I'm in the minority group that writes on paper. I do all the editing on the computer, but I just can't seem to write as well. My handwriting is pretty nice, so that's never been a problem, and my pens can usually keep up with my thoughts.
