Roll says... 5: And what next?
"So what happened next?" you say, trying to withhold your impatience as best as you can.
Eveningstar breathes oddly for a moment, then coughs and looks up at you. "Sorry. I've been getting a little bit of that lately. Anyway...
"Beefur told me that he knew that I was 'fraternizing with the enemy', and that I had purposely kept a possible omen from the Clan leader. I forced him to promise that he wouldn't harm any more apprentices, no matter the Clan, so he left Rabbitpaw on the beach and came home."
"But why was he killing apprentices in the first place?" you ask.
"The best I can think of is that he was trying to incite ForestClan to attack us and kill off Birchstar without Beefur having to get his paws dirty. That's why he and Thriftwhisker were the first to get into a fight - he was deliberately starting a war, and having those apprentices drown or nearly drown put ForestClan on edge." Eveningstar rests her chin on the ground and sighs, gazing at nothing. "Of course, we put an end to that as quickly as possible, but he got what he wanted in the end. I didn't think that he would just do it himself."
You stare at the ground for a moment, trying to wrap your head around the concept of a Clan cat actually trying to throw the Clans into a series of battles in the hopes of getting the leader killed. When you finally say something, it's, "That is literally the stupidest plan I've ever heard in my life. He would have gotten a lot more cats killed than just the leader."
"Cats have been dying anyway," Eveningstar murmurs. "When I found Birchstar, I knew that I should have told him about everything, but I had been so afraid of what would happen to me if everything came out that I kept my mouth shut. Besides, I didn't have enough evidence to convict all four of them, and that amount of cats would have cost the Clan too many good warriors."
"And cats probably wouldn't have believed you," you add.
"Right. He had planned everything perfectly, chasing off deputies and killing leaders and apprentices so he could control the Clan without being in a dangerous position, and I could do nothing about it without heavy consequences to everything I've worked for." Her light eyes turn on you. "So imagine my surprise when, of everyone in the Clan, you caught on to it and started becoming a genuine threat to his plans. You're a much more capable cat than half of our warriors and you're barely a moon into your training. I can only imagine how worse it will be for Beefur, now that it's personal."
"I'm a member of BrookClan," you say flatly. "My livelihood is to devote my life to my home and my friends. It's always been personal."
"I can see that." She sits up slowly. "Well, you know everything now. What do you plan to do with it?"
