"Well, I was thinking about asking mom," you say through a mouthful of fish. "But, y'know, she's busy and all that, especially now."

"True." Knotpaw munches at her own meal. "Wouldn't want to, uh...inconvenience her."

You say nothing to this.

After your meal, you head out again. Your leg is starting to feel a little sore, but you ignore it in the name of muckraking. There's no one near the border or even around that area - you guess that prey isn't running too well along here. Lucky you.

By the time you make it to the waterfall, you've re-explained everything to Knotpaw, and she's adding in her own theories and debating evidence with you. It would be fun if this wasn't such a terrible situation.

"But why would any loner just randomly agree to kill apprentices?" you say, as you walk along the water. "No amount of prey could convince a sane cat to do something like this."

"Maybe." Knotpaw squints. "Hang on. There's someone ahead."

You both hush and sneak forward, going from tree to tree. When you're close enough, you peek around the trunk at the back of a cat who's sitting at the edge of the cliff, staring down at the water and too zoned out to notice you.

"There's one of our culprits," you whisper.

"I know," Knotpaw murmurs back. "What should we do?"

Confront them.
Attack them.
Sneak away.
