Well, you figure that you might as well get as much information as possible. And if not, you'll at least have an interesting experience.

You head for the hill, ignoring the many glaring eyes and lobbed insults to cats across the street. You keep ignoring them, even when they're lingering around the foot of the hill and sitting outside houses, eating at bowls meant for kittypets. Just so long as they don't attack Thimble and Scat.

You don't see or hear either of them outside the house when you reach it, which relieves you. Thimble wouldn't stand a chance. You wonder how Scat handled these days.

This time, when you call around the corner of the brick house, it takes a minute for a cat to show up. It's the big white tom, who looks both surprised and pleased to see you. Before you can explain yourself, he waves you around and leads you into the yard.

It's completely deserted.

"We weren't expecting anyone to come by so early," he says cheerfully. "We usually eat our reserves and bunker down on a day like this. Everyone's inside napping or chatting. You're not here for food, are you?"
