You wait until Beefur walks away, looking grim, and then approach the large tom. You were never quite close to him, nor did you think much of his leadership, but you figure that it's the right thing to do.

You gently touch his shoulder with your nose, and say under your breath, "I'll find out what happened, and solve this whole thing. I promise."

You're almost certain that you're promising Darkpaw as well.

Just as you step away, the elders return. The sky is becoming littered with stars by the time the body is carried back out and the lavender is spread around. Eveningtail and Divercloud follow them, silent.

The rest of the Clan is pretty quiet as well; everyone sits in one place or eats food alone. You decide to sleep early, so you can catch Thistlenose as soon as you can. You don't say goodnight to anyone except your mother, who absently gives you a lick on the head, staring out after the deputy.

The next morning, you're up before everyone else, and you're quick to jump up and head out. You're almost out the entrance when Knotpaw walks back in. She pauses, looking at you.

"Oh, hey, Rookpaw," she says. "What're you doing up so early?"
