Are you better at writing silly or serious things?
Serious, but I also add some funny parts to lighten the mood.

I think I'm better at writing serious things with some dark humour strewn about. Or stories that start off silly but slowly become dark and serious as you read, I think I could be good at that.

Just posting here to mark the new thread. I'll answer questions later.

Serious things, written in an overly lighthearted and/or sarcastic manner. My writing always tends to be pretty sarcastic, and it's especially fun to write serious stuff that way, because of how wrong it is.

Do you ever invent languages for your fantasy worlds?
I never have, but I've always intended to. Conlangs are awesome. I usually create feelings for the language of a place, so all the names fit together - I once spent a good portion of an hour translating random words into Welsh so I could name two cities in a Welsh-inspired fantasy country.

Alright, I need some real help now.
I'm in my school's journalism club since a week, and we publish a small journal every month or so.
And I'm supposed to be writing short stories for them.

What kind of things interest students aged 12-17?

What is a 'newspaper story' writing style?

Hey, I have a quick question that may lead to a different question later, lol

would anyone be open to giving me title suggestions for a story? I'm really not liking the title that I'm using as a place holder, haha

@Arya

oooh, a journalism club sounds fun! 12-17 is a pretty big age range, so you'd probably be good with most things. You can always ask people around your school for suggestions though, because the people who read the newspaper would be the ones you are writing for. As for the writing style, it kind of depends on what you are writing. You mentioned short stories, so I would just focus on that. Short stories that fit in the space and that are interesting or fun to read. I think humor goes pretty well here, or stories that have a dramatic twist at the end!

You can potentially read some of the older papers to get an idea of an example as well?

Good luck!

    Are you better at writing silly or serious things?

    I am fully capable of writing both.
    It depends on my mood, and the characters, though, when deciding what to write.

    What are some of your characters' quirks?

    Sabien doesn't speak English, Shadowstep and Springfoot make me cry, and Rosalyn is a cocky piece of crap.
    Melody can hold a dagger, and Holly once tried to kill a dog and her best friend.

    Do you ever invent languages for your fantasy worlds?

    Yep! Sabien has her own tribal speak that no one understands.

    Do you plan your stories before you write them?

    I hate planning my stories but always do it by accident.

@claire
They didn't have any stories before I joined, do I can't exactly look at those.

But I'm horrible at writing humor!
I prefer action, fantasy... Would students prefer something in a normal high school for example or something in an invented world?
Thanks anyway!

For the story title, I need to read the story or at least know what it's about!

well, I know that fantasy is high on that list, along with the whole vampire/werewolf/etc. group. Romance is also up there as well, from what I can tell. If you look up a recent top ten teen fiction novels or something, it'll probably give you a better idea of what's current. As for the style, I'd try to go with something that has a lot of action and is easy to get excited about. Think of, like, an awesome headline, then the story that follows it comes after in the same kind of urgent excitement in its tone, I guess. If the editors agree to it, you might be able to write a kind of episodic set of short stories for the paper. ((Keep in mind, I don't actually read newspapers. This is just conjecture of what a newspaper might look for in a story from my perspective.))

I hope that helped >^.^< Good luck with the newspaper stories!

Story titles are not my strongest, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. What's the basic story arc?

@CJClaire

I'm open to giving suggestions, but I would need to know the story's plot at least ^^

@Arya

I would stick to the kinds of stories that you enjoy. If you enjoy it, there's a likelihood that other people will!
I agree with Bucket in that you could write a bunch of shorter stories that all interconnect. (Did you know that's how Stephen King originally published The Green Mile? (which is really good I recommend it profusely with a big warning because the ending had me crying my eyes out at 3am)).
One option is that you could create a quick questionnaire and ask your teachers to hand it out, and you could do a little bit of research that way. In any case that sounds really fun!
