C H A P T E R T H I R T E E N
I woke up back at HQ, slightly dazed. I tried to stand but failed, the pain in my anckle forcing me to fall. I heard various murmers. Other dogs congratulating me.
"Nice job, Hawk,"
"Amazing courage, 206," So many good things said about me. Yet I still didn't get why. What had I done that was so brave, except save a friend? That's classed as bravery? I thought we did it all the time here. Obviously not. I think the fact is, that back when HOWLS was new to the world, dogs helped each other a lot more. But now not so many of us could say we'd jump into the flames for a friend, so it's recognised more. Well, whatever the case, i'm just glad we've gotten Jay back.
* . * . * . * . * . * . * . * . *
About four days later, the fuss had died down. That was until I heard the news about my next mission. I hobbled over to Kelly, my anckle still aching a little, and she showed me to the briefing room. The windows were covered over with dark blue blinds, and there were a few single lights shining in the room. It was silent, there was probably a reason for it though.
"Undercover!?" I looked at her, confused but excited. She explained what I was going to be doing, and I almost jumped out of my fur. I wouldn't get to see anyone, talk to anyone. Nothing.
"Look, Hawk. I need you to do this, dissapear for a while. Go undercover, don't talk to anyone, make contact with anyone in any way. We found someone, they may be with KAT. Join up with them, find out if this is true,"
"What?! Why me? Why can't I speak to my friends, not even Texas?" This was all moving to fast. My injury was no longer severe and was on the mend, but I wasn't ready for this. Just dissapear? I didn't like the sound of that. What about my friends? The dogs that would worry about me?
"As I just said, you can't talk to anydog. Reason being we could have a snitch in the service, and I can't afford to loose any more information to anyone. I'm the only agent that knows about this, so no contact whilst your undercover. Understand?"
I sighed, this was too much. I mean, I didn't look up to Kelly the way I used to. She was so much more than this before. Out in the field, doing her bit. But all she seemed to do now was hang around, telling us what needed to be done. Now I saw her more of a friend than a hero. It was Taura that we should be surrounding with compliments, she was the Last Elite after all.
"So?" She waited for a reply, and I nodded slowly. Leading me outside, she smiled.
"Thank you, 206, you really helped me out there. Now, follow me, and i'll talk you through this," The fresh air seemed to jump upon us as we entered the gardens, and I began to relax. I knew I couldn't tell Texas - or anybody for that matter - but I also knew I didn't need to. Texas would bump into me sooner or later, I'd have to tell him. It's not like he'd mess this up or anything.
"So you'll be known as a rouge until all this clears up. Your name will be Lokwa', and we will have to get you a collar. Preferabley spikey. You'll be needing a radio, we'll hide that in your collar. A weapon or two, and somewhere to stay - we'll leave that to you. Ok?"
I nodded. Kelly really knew how to get a point across.
"Now, get ready. You leave at precicley 1.30am tomorow morning," A sigh fell from my mouth. I wasn't very good at keeping secrets, especially not as big as this. Though I suppose I had to, at least until Texas found out for himself.
First thing the next morning, before anyone else woke up, I silently padded into the main hall and waited for Kelly. There, she handed me a pair of grenades - the real type, the ones that go BOOM instead of spurting smoke everywhere - a remote controlled pistol and night vision, a tracking device and a large, black leather collar. Ideal for any 'bad-assed' disguise.
As I padded out the door, I looked back. Kelly was already moving on. I began to pick up the pace, and before I knew it I was out in the open. I followed the tracking device until I came across what I was searching for. The dead of night and a burnt down farm house. Lifting my head I saw a coal black wolf - just a little larger than myself - eating amongst the ashes. Perched next to her, a little Newfoundland terrier knawing hungrily on the remains of a raven. The skinny dog looked up at me, and I raised a brow, wondering what it would do next. Then the wolf stood up.
"Who are you?" It snapped defiantly. "What are you doing here?"
"Searching," I replied, not knowing what else to say. The stench of burnt wood and half eaten carcasses drifted up my nose, and I tried the best I could not to screw my face up. Why anyone would want to live in this place, I dread to think.
"For what?" She began impatiently.
"You, I suppose..." Their was a blank expression on her face. The night fell silent. She stalked up to me, and I was now able to tell that this dog meant business. She was covered ear to claw in angry battle scars, and she had no right eye. This dog - or demon - was a force to be reckoned with.
"Why?" She demanded, baring her teeth. Her muzzle was blood stained, her last kill - her last victim. I held my nerve, trying not to flinch. I had no idea what to say now. I couldn't say something like - 'I'm here to take out KAT and all her little scum-bag friends like you' could I? That wouldn't end well. I couldn't think of anything else to do but put on an act.
"I need help-" She growled. "Help in talking down HOWLS. I, I heard you would be good for the job." As I finished my sentence she glared at me.
"You smell like wolf, you look like a wolf-" as if she could tell- "Yet you have bright blue eyes. You are not a wolf, you're a fake! A con. "
Damn! I knew my secret would come out eventually. Well, I suppose I better tell you then. I have a black pelt just like a wolf. I have a large build, just like a wolf. I'm a little stronger than most dogs in the service. I'm also a little bigger than most other dogs in the service- except of course the huskies, and the malamutes, and the rest of the wolf related dogs. But I have ice blue eyes. Which leads me to the point... I'm part husky.
Now your going to hate me for being ashamed of my breed, which you have probably figured out as being offensive to the rest of the huskies. This is not my problem. You can thank my father for lying- and anyway, it's not really much of a dilemma since nobody but me (and of course this other dumbfounded dog) knows. I know what your going to say - your going to say that my eyes are bright blue, and that somebody's going to notice sooner or later. Trust me, I grew up at HOWLS, nobody there is going to notice.
"Congratulations. You got me," I muttered sarcasticly. I tried to keep the act going - going well that is.
"So, are you in?" She smiled as her reply. Freaky - fortunately I didn't look away, but with all her disgusting injuries it was hard not to. She really looked like a rotting skull at this moment in time. As she stopped smiling I gave a silent sigh.
"So, what name did you get landed with then?"
"Lokwa," I replied. "You?"
"Flo."
A few seconds after introducing herself to me, Flo turned around and walked away, heading for the back of the barn.
"Come on then," She said, flicking her tail in a gesture for me to follow. We passed the small terrier, who ignored us completely, and a few hundred feet after that, we were in a whole new world - or so it seemed. We'd gone down some stairs, past all the ashes and devestation, and into what seemed to be a club. There were dogs everywhere- wolves, dobermans, even rottwielers, and they all looked ferocious. I sure wouldn't want to get into a fight with them.
Flo lead me to what seemed to be a bar- a counter, with a few dogs behind throwing on the table all manner of drinks in large bowls. Beer, lager, even wine - all the things that a dog shouldn't drink. All the things that Flo seemingly loved.
"Your one of us now. Drink," She said, pawing a bowl of beer to me. I eyed the bowl- yuck! But I had to, if I didn't i'd probably end up with another broken bone. I looked at it for a minute more. The disco lights reflected off of the stinking liquid.
I delved my nose into the alcahol, trying to keep myself together as I gulped it down. At first it tasted vile, like something from the toilet, but then it all came back to me. I forgot how fun it was getting drunk. After a while, me, Flo, and another dog I had met - a rottwieler named Kasai - were having competitions to see how much we each could drink. I'm suprised I was still concious when we'd finished. The room was spinning when we walked outside, and at that moment it felt like the stars were falling. Great. It was night-time already, and I still hadn't found anything out. Or had I? I couldn't remember. Oh well. I guess i'd have to wait until the morning...
