When Gaze had adjusted his eyes from the dark to the bright sunshine, what greeted them was more than expected.
Wolves surrounded the clearing, tails wagging, eyes overjoyed. They barked and yapped and cheered, howling their return. Immediately Dahlia spotted her husband, a handsome white bob-tail wolf, and they greeted each other lovingly.
Tuteur ran to his wife and two pups, Cazadora kissed her husband, and Adrianna’s husband whom Gaze had seen before ran to her. Omega lovingly comforted his girlfriend, who was so terribly worried about him.
As all the families greeted their families and friends, Gaze noticed Stalk. He had hung his head, staring around at the pack. With a sigh, he watched him run into the forest, all alone. A lone wolf.
Gaze tried calling after him, he ran up the rocky slope into the trees, but all he saw was the green-striped tail dipping into a gully out of sight. Poor Stalk. He turned and went back to the others and happily greeted some more wolves.
After a while he decided to sit under a tree and wait for the others. He wasn’t good with all the wolves around, and he just relaxed himself. He glanced over at the tunnel again, and noticed something.
Lying just inside was a black and white furry heap. Limp and lifeless. Copaci. He couldn’t help letting out a tiny woof, whether it was for attention or not, he did not know. It just escaped.
The clearing of wolves looked over at him. It must have been a bit more than tiny. Most stared at him for a moment, before looking in the direction he stared.
Silence fell over the pack. No one said anything, they just stared. Then Dahlia’s husband bravely walked through the wolves, and they parted to let him through. He came to the cave entrance and looked down.
“Oh, god.” He murmured. He tightly shut his eyes and turned his head away. A few of the young pups around gasped and Omega’s girlfriend whimpered. Then Cazadora spoke up.
“Copaci’s gone.” She said. “He was tortured too far. Come, we shall return to the Alpha’s Cave.” And immediately, she started off towards the forest. Her husband lovingly walked beside her, and she leaned her head against his shoulder. Omega and Tuteur went back to pick up the body, and their girls walked with them. Gaze walked along with Tune, Bjorna, Balliar, and Simbas, and it was completely silent.
All the wolves, every singly one in the clearing except Stalk, walked off in a swarm through the trees.

By about midnight the entire group had arrived at the gardens. Gaze’s legs were so tired and aching, he felt he couldn’t walk another step. Bjorna was staggering along, half-leaning against Balliar’s shoulder. Tune hadn’t said a word the entire journey, she had kept her head high the whole way.
The group trudged through the trees, and they came to the rock steps leading to the cave. They stopped there, and Cazadora sighed, before leading the way up. Her husband followed, then the rest of the group.
Going up the steps wasn’t helping with Gaze’s exhaustion. His legs were started to wobble, and he had his head lolling down, staring at the rock beneath his feet. He listened to Gudinna’s continuous sobbing coming from behind.
At long last, they were finally at the top of the steps. They trudged to the middle of the room, and Gaze collapsed in a furry heap on the skin on the floor. It supported his aching muscles, making him feel relaxed and welcome. The other four fell down near him too, panting and wheezing, even though they had not run the way.
Wolves stepped either side of them, but they took no notice. He just looked at them upside down, watching Omega and Tuteur carry Copaci to his boulder. Together, they laid him upon it, bowing their heads as they stepped back.
But as Gaze watched, the rest of the group did too. They all assembled in front of the boulder, bowing their head. Even the young pups near their mothers. Gaze and the others stood on their sore, tired paws and bowed before him. It was completely silent.
But, from the corner, a sound broke that silence. A very sleepy-looking few guards ran from their tunnel at the side of the cave, only to find not robbers, but mourners. Confused they went with the others and looked at the boulder.
A look of shock spread over both their faces, seeing their Alpha lying dead so sudden. They too bowed their heads, and they all respected the life of their king.
After many minutes, the wolves started to lift their heads. Sapphira, Aldoro, Scar and Kulma approached them through the stream of wolves leaving the cave.
“Come pups. Gudinna has a place for us to stay.” Aldoro said. And without another word, he led the pups across the room to Gudinna, who showed them to a tunnel. They followed her down until they came to a cave, which they turned into. This one had no door, it was open, and immediately Gaze felt warmth as he entered.
The room was a nice size, and it was very cosy, with a large bear-skin rug on the floor in the middle. Gaze notice a fire in a corner, which explained the warmth and light. There was a hole in the top of the rock, so it was wise to place the fire there. In another corner was a large, flat-topped boulder, covered in blood. It was probably where they ate their meat. In another corner, half-separated into a room, was a few deer-skins, where they slept. On one of the walls were naturally formed shelves, and upon them were treasures like gems, skulls and rocks.
Gaze couldn’t help feeling how luxurious the place was. Being the Alpha female, Gudinna, with Copaci, had the best chamber.
“Well, do you like it pups?” asked Scar. Tune and Bjorna nodded politely, but Gaze, Balliar and Simbas were gaping around at the place. Sapphira laughed weakly at them.
“Well, you may come and sleep in my room if you wish.” Said Gudinna.
“No, we won’t,” replied Kulma. “But would the pups like to?” Bjorna shot her gaze to her mother.
“Oh yes! May we sleep in your room Gudinna?” she said delightedly, turning back to Gudinna.
“Of course! Come, I think we’re all tired.” Tune and Bjorna exchanged excited looks, and all five of them trotted behind her. They came into the ‘room’ and found it was as pretty as the first room. The skins on the floor were fluffy and soft, and in on of the corners, propped against the wall, was a large piece of flat wood, with symbols cleverly carved into it. Gaze still didn’t understand what they meant.
Gudinna went up to a beautiful deer-skin and lay down on it, stretching her paws out in front of her and yawning. As the pups huddled up on the other rug, Gaze saw a look of pain flash through her eyes. This must have been Copaci’s bed.
As Gaze relaxed himself and let the sore in his paws go away, sleep was clearly hiding in the corners and it suddenly grabbed him.

Gaze awoke soon enough, not bothering to open his eyes. He lay there, on the beautiful, soft bed, ever so grateful to be finally lying on a proper one at last. He took in the fresh air and listened to guards and other wolves bustling about in the main cave.
After a few minutes, he opened one eye and looked about. Tune and Simbas next to him were still asleep, and as he sat up he found Bjorna, Balliar and Gudinna were too. He looked out into the main room and saw Sapphira, Aldoro, Scar and Kulma huddled together on the large rug in the middle of the room. A little bit of light made a golden puddle on the floor from the hole above the fire, which had burned out and was a dead pile of coals.
He stood up and stretched out his legs. He was very well-rested and felt nice and calm, but as he remembered the previous night sadness flooded through him.
But had happened, happened, and he couldn’t do much about it. He knew Copaci would not want his pack to stop because of him, so he shook the horrid thought away with the dust on his fur.
Gaze trotted out of the room into the main one, and carefully crept past the others, sound asleep. He went out into the tunnel and watched a guard pass him from down the tunnel. He smiled, and Gaze smiled back, before heading up after him.
He came out into the light of the tunnel and embraced the warm morning air. He saw a few wolves talking in the corners and around the room, and watched Adrianna walk up the entrance tunnel with her husband. He spotted Armik next to Tuteur and another guard, and they spoke and laughed a little.
Gaze went and sat next to the Alpha’s boulder, watching the morning wolves getting to their business. He wasn’t usually a guest any where, and he just watched what these wolves did in the Alpha’s cave. He looked at the top of the boulder and noticed Copaci’s body was gone.
As he was drifting away into his thoughts, there was a voice behind him.
“Hey, Moon-Gaze.” Said Aldoro, coming to sit next to him.
“Hey.” He replied. “Aldoro, what is going to happen? Who will be the Alpha?”
“Pup, they won’t elect a new Alpha right now. It will be a few moons before they find the right wolf.” He replied. “It’s a big responsibility, you know.”
“Well, who will take his place until then?” Gaze asked curiously.
“Someone important. Probably a head guard or something.” He replied, looking around the cave. Gaze stared out too, thinking.
Just then he spotted a few wolves coming up the steps outside. He stood up and saw they were dragging a large deer. They hauled it to the top and dragged it not far from where the two were sitting. They all dropped the load and one of them approached Aldoro politely.
“Sir, we have brought this deer as a gift for Gudinna through this tough time.” He said. Aldoro nodded.
“Let’s go to her chamber. She’ll like this.” He replied. The wolf turned and went back to the others, and they started pulling the deer behind Aldoro and Gaze who had got up. They walked across the room and went into the tunnel, towards Gudinna’s cave.
They walked in a found Sapphira awake, sitting up on her rug. Bjorna was in the corner examining the treasures. They both looked up and smiled.
“Aldoro!” said Sapphira, as he walked up to her.
“They’ve got a meal for us.” He said to her, licking her forehead lovingly. She smiled and looked out the door, seeing the pack of wolves drag the carcass into the room. They hauled it over to the flat boulder and placed it on, making sure it was presented nicely. Just as they were about to leave, Gaze noticed something just outside in the tunnel.
A tiny pup peeped in, smiling. One of the wolves spoke.
“Come in, sweetie.” He said. The little wolf trotted in on her tiny legs, and put her front paws on the boulder. He lifted her head and from her mouth she placed two beautiful, blue flowers next to the deer.
“For Gudinna.” She said.
“Aw, she’s very cute.” Exclaimed Sapphira.
“Thank you.” Replied the wolf who had let her in. “She’s my little daughter. Come on pack.” And he said no more as all of them headed out the door. Just as Sapphira was waking Kulma, Gudinna walked out of her room. When she noticed the deer a smile came across her sad face.
“Who brought this?” she asked.
“A group of wolves.” Replied Sapphira. Kulma was now awake, and Scar was stirring. From behind Gudinna, Simbas and Tune walked out.
“Whoa!” said Simbas as he saw the glorious meal. Tune smiled and went to stand by her mother. “Should I wake Balliar?” Simbas then asked.
“Mmm.” Grumbled Scar. Simbas smiled cheekily and bolted into the room, and the only thing they heard was a lot of menacing barking.
“Well, I think we all need out breakfast.” Said Gudinna, and the group approached the table. “Dig in!” she said. They all started tucking into the meat, and Gaze was so hungry didn’t really bother chewing. A moment later Simbas and Balliar ran into the room, and they too started their feast.
Gaze’s stomach was getting fuller and fuller, and he felt the life bouncing back into him. Blood covered his face up to his eyes, and he very much enjoyed it.

A while later, Gaze could not have another bite. He staggered over to the rug on the floor and collapsed. He sighed and watched the others. Tune was quickly finished, and sat down too, as well as Bjorna and Simbas. Balliar and the adults kept eating though.
At last the carcass was almost completely stripped, and it was an ugly pile of left-overs. The others came and sat down to lick their muzzles of blood and let the food go down. It was the first absolutely full meal in a while.
