Choices:
1: I have to pay?
2: He's gotta pay me?
3: Say nothing
4: So what?
5: So what?
6: So what?
7: He's gotta pay me?
Roll says... 3: Say nothing.
You wait as well. After a moment, she rolls her shoulders indifferently.
"So," she says. "He's going to have to pay through you. You've basically got a little slave now."
You tilt your head. "What's a slave?"
All three cats stare at you.
"It's, like, when you own someone," Thimble says. "Like a thrall."
"I don't know what a thrall is, either," you say.
"Regardless-" Charlie waves her tail. "-your little friend here is now under your command. Anything you tell him to do, think, whatever, he's gotta. But, as long as you're here, you either have to keep him with you at all times, or you have to know exactly where he is. No one can kill him while he belongs to you, but they can drive him away or accidentally chase him into traffic. You've got full responsibilities for him now."
Like an apprentice. Great.
"That's awesome!" Thimble turns to you excitedly. "Can I borrow your thrall sometimes?"
Scat reaches past you and bops Thimble on her chest. She laughs and darts behind you to get him back, leading the two to charge back and forth in a game of tag.
"In any case..." Charlie says quietly. Her eye and smile turn kind. "You're an unusual one, kiddo. You've been here, what...five days, and you're already this far."
You're not entirely sure what to say, so you don't say anything.
"Normally, you little ones get killed on your third day." She lowers her head and half mumbles, talking to herself. "Doesn't matter where they come from, they always screw up somehow. Never can do much about it." She looks back to you and speaks louder. "But you're quick. Much quicker that I expected. And I'm sure it'll give you plenty of trouble, but you've got a good heart. That's a rare thing here. Keep it, if you can."
She stands up now, turning to the fence but still talking to you. "There's still plenty for you to learn, but they're the sort of things you have to learn yourself. I can't do much more but congratulate you."
"Have I graduated?" you ask, only half-joking.
"S'pose so." Before she jumps over, she grins at you, her dog-teeth bright in the sun. "If you ever need anything, ask around. I'll find you. From here on out, though, it's all you. Can you handle that?"
You glance back at Thimble and Scat, who are still engaged in play. Scat is dashing around Thimble in circles, and Thimble is catching him with a paw before he jumps away and goes in the other direction. Watching them, you feel an odd wave of serenity and peace.
"I think so."
