I was born under a blood moon, in a pack of wolves. But they weren't wolves. They were Soul Wolves. A Soul Wolf is stronger, leaner, faster, and smarter than any ordinary wolf. One problem with our society is that we need a "master" to rule our lives. We live for eternity, unless a battle kills us. We live like dogs to humans, this I regret greatly. Well, back to the story.
I was 3 sunrises old when humans came into our shelter. The "camp" is a clearing filled with lean-to's. There are about 1500-3000 Soul Wolves crammed into 150 lean-to's. The humans came and picked me up, and they carried me to a tribal tent. There, they inspected every part of me like cattle or pigs. They treated me and my kind like livestock. When I got back to the shelters, I realized that I had a sister. My mother hadn't named me yet, but apparently I had anger in my eyes, so they named me Rage. My sister always competed for things, so they called her Envy. I was black and she was white. She loved the human companionship, and I hated it. We travelled by a human's side like a dog. We were put on a chain-leash and we were given metal collars. We were beaten when we did something wrong, and we were given "treats" when we did something "good". I killed my first human before the first year of my birth ended. I started the first act of rebellion. The other Soul Wolves were shocked, but many of them joined me, a 1-year-old Soul Wolf to lead them against their chains as well. The humans gathered forces of the Soul Wolves who wanted to stay, and I gathered the ones who wanted to leave. We fought long and hard. Ever member of us they killed, we killed two. We were fighting for freedom, we had nothing to lose but our lives. They had to keep us, or they lost us. Negotiation wasn't an answer, and diplomacy was out of the question. I killed and killed and killed. Death took grip of many wolves from both sides, as well as humans. At the end of the battle, only a certain few Soul Wolves were left on our side. I had many cuts and bruises. I said "We are free!" and the others chanted in praise. We knew what we had to do, we had to split up, populate, and then turn from our past. I passed all of the dead bodies, speared or cut up. I looked away, remorseful and guilty. I had to get over it, I would see dead things all my life. Then I saw the dead body of my mother and my father, and I broke down
I ran through the forest, happy and free. Then I heard dogs, no, wolves. but they were normal wolves. I heard "There's another one near here! This would make 9/9 that we have killed since the war." I panicked. The others were dead. I took off into the forest, leaving behind no trail except dust clouds. I ran until I saw snow, tundra, and pines. I saw a nearby cave, and I heard a voice "Come in here, it's safe." I saw small, beady eyes under a low pine tree. I walked up to it and fell into a hole. She laughed as she said "You're supposed to jump down the burrow, not fall." I grumbled and shook the loose dirt from my pelt. She said "Who are you?" I replied "I am Rage. What are who are you?" She looked taken aback "I am a wolf, once I was tamed by humans. My pelt is so white, they named me Snowball." I chuckled "Snowball? That's what your name is? It doesn't sound so fierce." She said "It's deceiving. It doesn't sound fierce so they let their guard down. I'm not going for fierce anyway." She turned and walked through the burrow. Even though she was annoyed, she was pretty and nice. She looked back at my cuts and she said "Come, we can tend to your scratches." I said "we?" she didn't reply, she just darted through the dark, cold tunnels. I followed her glowing white pelt, and we came to a pool of water, where many wolves were. They all looked up at me, and I returned their gaze. I heard one of them say "Hey, Bone, who do you think this newbie is?" Another wolf replied "I think he's just a mutt, Scarface. A lowly little pet." I snarled and I stepped out into a pool of moonlight shining through a crevice in the top of the tunnel "Who are you calling mutt, Bone." I said, assuming he was Bone. Once they saw my scratched up face, they cowered down before me. I went over to the pool of water and I rinsed off the blood. I looked in my reflection, and I saw that I had a scar over my left eye. That explained why I couldn't see through it. I also had a scar leading from my shoulder down my belly to the base of my tail. My inky-black pelt was stained with my scars. My right ear was nicked and my face was broken. I looked dead and bony. There was a rock by the pool of water, and I went up and sat on it. Many wolves turned to me, and I said "My brothers, my friends. I am Rage, a Soul Wolf who escaped enslavement from humans yesterday. My family died, my friends died, and apart of me died as well. I wish to take this place as a sanctuary, until I heal enough to set out again." Snowball looked up at me and she replied "I built this place, I see who stays and who goes. I want you to stay, Rage. But what is a Soul Wolf?" I looked down at my paws and I answered "A Soul Wolf is a shifter. It can turn into a human, wolf, and in the most extreme of cases, a dragon. I can't shift, I am not old enough. The only way a Soul Wolf is created is through normal reproduction or by something else. When you take Ginger and crush it up and put it directly in the bloodstream through someone's neck. "I need companions. Any takers?" A few wolves stepped forward in the water. A small mottled brown wolf said "My name comes from a long-dead tribe. My name is Venomfang." A sold gray wolf with a black face, black paws, and black stripes said "My name is Night." Bone was a light gray with white flecks and Scarface was a light tan with a long scar from one side of his face diagonally to the other side. A small black wolf said "I am Jag, and my brother is Indigo. We want to join." then another wolf walked up to me and said "My name is Cleft, named after the accident my mother was in... when she was pushed off of a cliff." I didn't tell them that only the strongest would make it for a reason. They would back down if they knew it wouldn't be easy. I said "We need ginger, anyone have any?" To my surprise, a few wolves walked up with many ginger roots. I unsheathed my claws and I opened a slice in Bone's neck before taking some crushed ginger and putting it in the largest vein. He took cobwebs and patched it up afterwards. I did it to the rest of the volunteers. They all survived, luckily, the next day. They all had ember eyes and they all obeyed me now. I said "Block all of the exits. You were volunteers, no? Now I will take the ones who aren't and I will turn them." I took the rest of the ginger, and as the others blocked off the cave exit, I went up to a young pup. I unsheathed my claws and I drew a line of blood in it's neck fur. It screeched, but I didn't care. I inserted ginger, and it screeched more. I took the rest of the ginger and I turned the rest into Soul Wolves. Unfortunately, only 30 survived, all of them healthy, 2-3 year old wolves. Snowball came into the cavern and she looked at the dead bodies around her. She said "What have you done, Rage!? They're dead! You killed them!" I replied smoothly "I didn't kill them, they just weren't strong enough. My population will die out if I have no replacements, even you know that, Snowball." I walked up to her and nuzzled her slightly. She didn't reject it. She said "I would tell you to leave but... it just doesn't seem right..." I said "you have a point, it isn't right. You and I could stay here, together. As mates, even." I thought she would freak out or panic, but she said nothing. She didn't reject it, and she didn't accept it. She just told me "I'll think about it." She left the cavern and I looked back evilly. Bone asked me "Is she your mate now, Rage?" I replied "Hopefully, Bone. When you see the mate you want for life, you know it. I just don't know if she sees me that way." Bone whispered "But you have only known her for a few days." I said nothing.
She came back later and she said "I am turning this place into a sanctuary for Soul Wolves. If you turn one wolf into a Soul Wolf or if you're going to, bring them here. I will stock up on ginger." I was about to ask about my proposal, but she left. I dragged bodies out of the way, pausing to look at the blood color. It was black. That proved that they didn't make it. I put down some large stones, and then I put moss on them, for comfort. I sent Bone and the others to find the best of ordinary wolves and bring them here. When I say 'the best' I meant the strongest, the fastest, the best. I also told them to bring as many pups here as possible. I walked up to Snowball with a hare in my jaws from the hunting trip earlier. The minute I dropped it by her feet, she said "Yes. I will be your mate." I was happy, exited, amused, everything. I couldn't say anything, but my eyes showed everything. I hadn't shown any feelings for any wolf but her, and they were still rising. One problem, she was a normal wolf. I asked her "I would be honored if you became one of us. Will you do that, for me?" She looked back at me and she said "Unless I have to, no. I won't become one of your enslaved demons. Not now, not ever. Unless I'm dying or I begging to become one, do not turn me." I was saddened. If we had pups, they would be half-breeds. I wouldn't do it out of her own will, though. Bone walked back up to me, a pup in his jaws, and 4 pups following him, with three other female wolves behind him. He said "I have a few. I assume the stones are ready?" I nodded and he led them all to the mossy stones. I followed him and I said "One wolf per stone. Lie one your stomach. I will be with you in a few minutes, Bone will not let you leave." Scarface came back with a few injuries, but a few wolves. He said "The Soul Wolf Hunters are trying to kill us. Many died, I was not pursued." I asked "How many left?" He made tally marks i the dust, 18. I grimaced. That was a low number. He had 7 wolves with him. I told him to guide them to the stones and Bone would direct them from there. I walked into another cavern section, filled with ginger roots. I took out a stone and I placed ginger roots on it. I then crushed them to make a pulp so it would be easier to get in the bloodstream. I found an old bowl, possibly created by humans, and I filled it up with crushed ginger-paste. I walked back into the other cavern filled with stones, and I went up to the first wolf, a purely white pup. I cut a small slit in it's neck and I put in some ginger. I ignored the cries from it, and then I moved on to the next wolf, and the next one until they all were in agonizing pain and turning. One pup went limp from the start, and I ordered my lackeys to take away the body. They walked up to it, and it twitched a little. I looked at it's eyes, and I saw that it had ember-colored eyes. It was weak, but alive. I said "I name you Spasming Leopard for your constant jolting and moving." It jolted one more time, then it fell unconscious. The others looked at me and they said "Do we get names?" I replied "No, you are not the new generation. I plan to revoke their powers once they get adept enough to be a human. Then they will be humans under my blood. They will be daring, courageous, dauntless, self-sufficient, and they will worship me. I expect them to be wily enough to hunt Dragons, so they shall be the Dragon Hunters. I will name one chieftain now." I looked at the pups who survived, and I chose the strongest one and I said "This one. I name it Shadowing Cloud. He will be the leader when he becomes of age. I need to train you, so you don't die next time.
I spent the next 10 months training Bone, Night, Venomfang, and Scarface. Snowball watched the whole time, wide-eyed. By the end of training, I had 4 sons. I named them Ash, Night, Dust, and Fury. Fury was the youngest, and Ash and Night were the eldest. They were half-breeds, like I said they would be. They all watched me train the other members, and that is when I learned to shift. I shifted into a human once, and I used magic. I could do almost anything. I used my newfound abilities to create magical weapons. Weapons that could turn into animals. I created a black sword for me, that turned into a black wolf. I decided to name the swords after the masters. Bone got a sword that was named Bone, which turned into a lynx. Night got a sword that could turn into a Cobra. Venomfang got a sword that turned into a swarm of wasps, and Scarface got a sword that turned into a bear. I trained them out of their apprenticeship, and I created a Council with them. I made it The Council. The pups that were turned into Soul Wolves watched me and were able to shift. I revoked their powers and I dropped them off in the middle of a forest with little supplies. My plan worked. They obeyed my every word, and I was a God to them. They created dragon bone armor, dragon bone weapons, and like I said, they were daring and dauntless. I found pride in them.
One day, a familiar person walked up to me. I knew her. She fought on the other side of the battle front, she is the one who killed my parents. Envy. She said "Rage. I beg for your forgiveness. I didn't know you were... injured this bad." Without warning, I backhanded her hard and fast, where she fell to the ground. I said "I am someone of importance now, Envy. I know you were the one killing my scouts, and I know that you were the one who killed mom and dad. You caused this! Now I have exceeded my powers, and now you come crawling back to me." She was also adept, she was a human, not a wolf. She got down on one knee and she said "Rage, I beg you, let me live with your followers. Give me a name, and give me a place within your society." I replied "Fine. I name you Shadowy Cheetah. Don't let me down, Envy, or I will come for you." She grinned and walked off.
