/ the moon is dead
164 words
"Station seventeen isn't answering anymore," Trance looked up from the communications console "Do I resend the message Settica?"
"Yes."
"Wait," Sidra held up her hand "Trance, give us visual of Ke'vit."
"Visual?" Trance turned to Settica for confirmation.
"Do as she said."
Trance's fingers flew across the panels, bringing up Kataria's smallest moon on the screen.
For a second there was dead silence. Then Settica slowly shook her head and buried her face in her hands.
"It's impossible," Sidra said, when she found her voice "How?"
"It's spreading," Trance croaked, unable to tear her eyes away from the disintegrating satellite "It's spreading and it won't stop until it destroys the rest of the moons."
"It won't stop until it destroys the entire solar system," Sidra said.
"Trance, are you picking up any signals coming from Ke'vit?" Settica asked, her wings drooping down.
There was a crackle and the console spat static, then a myriad of voices poured out, panicked, terrified voices pleading for help.

hello, thank you for the feedback on my thread for the same challenge.
it is my turn to pop in on your thread and give you some words of encouragement.
I find that your writing (even on the longer one shots) is really engaging and the progression/ pacing is quite well thought out.
I especially love your dialogue - you just have a knack for it.
If I had to give you constructive crit, I would say to challenge yourself more. You seem to rely on the same comforts, try using different words, sentence structures etc.. here and there, but other than that this is pretty impressive and I can't believe how many prompts you've already completed.
Keep it up and I'll be seeing you in the winners circle ;)

I started in the middle of Nano like 5,000 words behind on my daily count, so I went a little bit mental using this to try and catch up, so yeah, that's why I have so many already. But thanks for the tip, I'll definitely be looking for ways to spice my writings up! Can't wait to see you at the finish line ^-^

/ one step at a time
490 words
Kwet could hardly claim to use his wings even half as much as the average Vive, but that wasn't to say he didn't mind not being able to use them. He hated it. He felt even more useless than usual.
"Hey Doctor! Has your mouth frozen shut or are you ignoring me?"
Kwet blinked and looked up "Sorry?"
"I asked if you needed a break."
"Oh," Kwet paused and glanced around him. The situation hadn't improved since the last time he'd checked in with reality. Gale force winds ripped down the mountain driving a blinding sleet into their eyes and keeping them pinned to the ground, it was steadily growing darker, and Aveth still had that thin, strained smile welded to his face.
"Let's...keep going," he said slowly "Sooner we get there, the sooner we get back."
"You sure?"
"Of course," Kwet wrapped his arms closer around his chest and tugged his wings flatter against his back. It did nothing to help his balance, but at least he could pretend that it made him feel warmer.
Aveth nodded faintly, obviously not convinced by his companion's words, but followed after him silently.
The incline increased drastically over the next few minutes and the snow turned to solid ice. Even with bracers, metal feet didn't get good traction and Kwet found himself going back more than forwards.
At one point he leaned his full weight onto one foot.
"Careful!" Aveth's warning was a second a too late and Kwet slipped, tumbled backwards with a yelp. He landed with a painful crunch on his already oversensitive wings.
"Are you alright?" Aveth hooked his hands under Kwet's arms and pulled him upright.
"Fine, I'm fine," Kwet's voice was barely audible over the screech of the wind "Let's keep going."
But Aveth had pulled him up so far that his feet dangled above the ground and he didn't put him down "I don't think so. You're exhausted."
"No I'm-"
"Five minutes, just so you can see straight."
Kwet huffed, but the exasperation was lost in the white air "Fine."
Aveth released him and together they sank down. The wind was no kinder lower to the ground and the icy shards caught on the drafts bit all the harder now that Kwet wasn't focusing on where to step.
"Hey," Aveth's soft word was barely there in the storm, but Kwet looked up.
The bigger Vive extended his wing, curling it around his smaller friend, buffering him from the icy sleet "It's gonna be fine."
Kwet nodded, but Aveth knew, he still needed to hear those words. "We'll get to the top in due time, don't need to rush, whatever's up there is obviously not going anywhere."
"I know but-"
"But you won't be able to do anything if you get hurt on the way up," Aveth repriminded him gently "Alright? Just take it a bit slower."
"Fine," Kwet huffed eventually.

/ electric gold
548 words
Silver naturally would have been most ideal, but it was in drastic short supply. Most valulable, it was the first thing scaveneged from the warfields. Sometimes the corpses where stripped by their own surviving comrades, the metal to be reused for another weapon, another piece of armor that would be given to another, hopefull more lucky soldier. Copper was second best, but next to nonexsistent in the first place, too precious to waste on common cannon fodder.
So gold would have to do. That was alright, it was soft, easy to work with, when Kwet was done molding it into it's proper shape he would consruct a sheath of stronger material to protect it. He kept his eyes focused downwards as he flattened the final wedge into a tip. It was the last essential part.
As he began to assemble it all together he heard footsteps, beating aginst the uneven ridge. Immediatly he assigned the sound to Aveth's return. But on second thought, why wasn't he flying back?
A deep sense of unease curled deep inside him. They'd already searched the battle field for survivors, but maybe Aveth had found something on his second foray.
He left the incomplete weapon on the ground and stood up, squinting down the incline. Two figures were picking their way upwards and neither of them were Aveth's familliar bulk.
His first instinct was to abadon the sparse makeshift camp, but that thought died as soon as he had it. He had no way to contact Aveth. If they were seperated, they'd never survive.
He sat back down and slid the assortment of pieces back into his lap. It only took a moment, then it was complete, an electric hum pulsing in its hollow throat. Gold couldn't pierce skin, much less battle armor, but there was no time and besides, if Kwet had done it right, he wouldn't need to even touch them.
A set of wings showed over the rim of the overhang and Kwet bolted upright, both hands gripping the center of the staff.
The interloper stared at him narrowly, a glint catching in his eye. Kwet fought the urge to step back as the significantly bigger Vive apparently judged him as not a threat. His companion wasn't as large as he was, but she was still bigger than Kwet.
For several seconds they stared each other down. His first thought was they were scavengers, but after his precursery look, he realized they were only trying to look like ones. The scratches in their armor were new, the dust in their joints was crumbling not thick the way it would have been if it had layered for months, and the scrapes in their weapons still shone.
No, these were warriors.
But why pretend?
"You Kwet?" The big one rumbled bluntly.
Kwet wavered, trying to process his name on the stranger's lips. They took his silence as confirmation.
"It's your friend," the female said "He's hurt."
Kwet almost lost his grip on the staff as terror caused his wings to flare.
Trap. This was a trap.
"Where is he?" Kwet croaked, tightening his grip. He didn't have to even touch them to take them down.
He had to find Aveth.
The staff crackled with electricty and gold glinted in the warrior's eye.

/ breakdown
1,412 words
Cold. So, so cold. Kwet thought the Light in his hands had solidified. He still clutched his staff and energy hummed, but it was drowned beneath the shuffle of wings and feet.
Every second he fought off the instinct to fly as he and his "escort" delved deeper into the natural maze. Or rather, his captors, because there was no escape now as the sky disappeared.
"Where are you taking me?" Kwey snapped finally, stopping and spinning to face them "Where is Aveth?"
They shared an unreadable glance.
"Diocore requires your presence," the female clipped, her wings flaring ever so slightly "You will see your friend after."
Kwet wanted to demand that they take him to Aveth right now. But the warriors where pressing closer and their hands were straying towards their weapons. Kwet bit back his angry words and started walking again.
Several more turns down the ever narrowing path, then it opened up to a wide cavern. White lights burned against the metal, bathing the whole space in painful brightness.
The figure that commanded the center of the room cast no shadow but it didn't make him any less imposing. His gaze fixed on Kwet and didn't stray as the doctor was shoved the last few steps forwards. His gaze never left, but their eyes didn't meet, in fact the stranger looked everywhere but his face.
"Doctor Kwet," there was no question in their tone but Kwet nodded anyways.
"How do you know me?"
The stranger shrugged slowly and stepped closer, eyes glinting "You'll lend aid to anyone who needs it. Several of my soldiers have come back, patched up with surprising expertise from a scavenging neutral."
"I entered and completed medical school long before this madness started," Kwet answered shortly, wings locking flat against his back as he forced his neck to crane upwards at the huge Vive.
"Yet," they rumbled, reaching out towards the humming staff "You've created several useful tools that most certainly aren't standard medical grade."
Kwet pulled the staff closer to his chest "I only make weapons to protect myself. I won't make them for you or the other side." The cold crept to the inside of his core and seeped down his spine as the two warriors at his back shuffled quietly.
"Only yourself, doctor?" Diocore laughed and wrenched the staff away from Kwet as he blanched.
"I suppose it's a good thing I don't want you to build us weapons," Diocore whirled the staff in a blazing arch, laughing "I just want you to use these wonderful creations and that bright mind of yours. This is war doctor, you may not have chosen a side, but certainly you've killed."
Diocore hesitated, gauging the doctor's silence "To protect yourself? To protect your friend?"
Kwet tried to choke out a reply, but only a grinding wheeze made it out.
Diocore narrowed his eyes "Yes?"
"No!" It burst out from Kwet and he tried to backpedal from Diocore, only to have his arms wrapped in viselike grips from the soldiers.
"No?" Diocore said it almost curiously "Certainly you hate seeing your fellow Vives slaughtering each other? You could end it," his voice took on a wheedling tone "Just kill Mayveth. We know where he is, we just need someone who can get into the base and you've proved wily before, little doctor."
"No!" Kwet tried to pull himself out of their grip "No! Not for you!"
"No?" Diocore rolled his eyes "Still? Fine," he huffed out a sigh and turned, leaning the staff in the crook of his elbow "Let's go see your friend."
Kwet didn't struggle as he was dragged out of the room into a substantially darker hallway. Several minutes and he could barely see Diocore's folded wings in front of him. With a flourish, the would-be king threw open a door and stalked into the dim hole. The warriors pushing Kwet paused at the entrance and he could feel their wings shivering. Diocore turned, eyes glinting as he pinned his soldiers beneath his gaze. They still wouldn't go forwards and instead shoved Kwet in, blocking his escape, but not budging.
Kwet stumbled and landed on his knees, the freezing pain in his joints preventing him from rising again.
"I assume you know quite a bit about Vive biology, being a doctor," Diocore's voice hummed, from somewhere above him "You know how hard it is to preserve a body after death? We may have one of the longest life spans of the know sentient races in the universe, but after it's spent there's nothing to show that we've been around, just the memories of others."
There was a click and a dusty white light poured down, painting Diocore with an unnatural sheen and revealing rows of shelves.
"What...did you do..." Kwet rasped out, his body temperature dropping so far he could hardly move "Monster."
"A revolutionary," Diocore corrected with amusement "Political and scientific."
"No," Kwet wanted nothing more than to pull his wings around his face and hide the horrifying sight, but he was frozen "This is sacrilege."
"I immortalized them, for eternity if I've done my science right," Diocore shrugged, turning and facing his collection "So maybe not the whole body, but honestly, the face is the most important part anyway and the arms and legs and wings have a tendency of taking up more space than they should."
"Speaking of spaces, here's an empty one, right in the center, I've been saving it actually," Diocore glanced over his shoulder at the immobile doctor "For Keyvar. But you know, your friend is nearly the same size as Mayveth is. If you don't bring me what I want, I'd have no trouble filling the empty space."
"no..."
"I'm sorry, I told you we were going to see him, didn't I?" Diocore clamped a heavy hand over one of Kwet's quivering wings and hauled him to his numb feet "Well, I do hope you take a good look, doctor, if you decide not to do as I have asked, this will be the last time you see him."
Diocore spun them both to face the opposite wall, where pallid light dripped down over the chains and pooled in the wide set of panicked eyes. They'd bound his mouth shut, but Aveth was still screaming, his whole body straining against the chains.
"As you can see," Diocore said, gripping Kwet tighter as he tried to rush forwards "I haven't hurt him yet, but-" easily he forced the doctor to face him and leaned so close that the breath of his words washed over Kwet "if you don't do what I want, I will tear him apart long before I kill him. Piece by piece I will break him down."
Diocore released him and hefted the gold staff, angling it towards the gap between Aveth's helmet and chest armor. It began to charge up with a deadly humming. A crackle sped along the length and the tip began to glow.
"I'll do it!" Kwet clutched uselessly at Diocore's arm, trying to pull him away "I'll do it!!"
With a twist of his shoulder Dicore connected the tip directly with Aveth's skin.
A muffled shriek of agony echoed through the room as Aveth's back arched and his wings beat against the wall as electricity wracked his body.
"Stop! Stop! I said I'd do it! Please!"
Diocore relented, grinning as he turned the staff over in his hands "Clever, clever little doctor. Your toy causes a great deal of pain, but only enough to incapacitate your enemy, not cause any damage or any lasting effects. Just give you enough time to run away."
He threw it to the ground "Disgustingly delicate, aren't you? You've got better, I know. Or you'll make better, if you want to bring back Keyvar's head."
Kwet reached for the staff and clutched it tightly, using it to brace himself as he stood up "You might win, but you'll still be hated," he hissed "You're still a monster."
"Oh, hush hush," Diocore waved a hand idly "Best be going now."
Kwet threw a glance towards Aveth, but he could only bear to meet his friend's eyes for a second.
"I'll keep the staff though," Diocore ripped in away from Kwet "It may not be potent, but it still has a tip, I think it'd be rather poetic to kill someone with the weapon their friend made to protect them."

/ vulnerability < stone cold
(note, changed Mayveth's name to Keyvar)
388 words
It had been easy. Much too easy. Their defenses where good, but not that good. Kwet didn't have to do much more than flutter to disable the motion triggers and the Light sensors. Slipping past the guards, vigilant as they were, was no more challenge. Kwet was used to being ignored and used to moving so that he wouldn't be noticed. Deeper into Keyvar's camp, deeper towards the most fortified areas, towards where Diocore's soldiers had informed him the opposing leader would be.
The gun slung along his back seemed to weigh more than it ever had before, the blade in his hands dragging him down.
Oh Sweet Seventh and Void's Teeth he didn't want to do this.
He pushed down the panic, the rising terror and horror of what he was going to try to do and focused on every silent forwards step. He was slipping through a matinence shaft, so any sound he made would be multiplied tenfold with disaterous consequences. But it led him directly to Keyvar.
The slats on the grate cut lines across Diocore's rival, but otherwise he looked like a normal Vive as he hunched over a commpad, scrolling through various reports. A gun leaned against his knee, but it wasn't a factor. He'd be dead before he knew he needed it.
Kwet hefted his own weapon to his shoulder and set the sight. Silently it began to charge.
But his hands betrayed him. As he tried to pull the release, the tremors took his wrists and he couldn't fire.
Keyvar...Keyvar wasn't any better than Diocore. He killed, he fought on the battle field, he told other Vives to fight. He had just as many deaths to his name as Diocore.
Kwet closed his eyes and forced himself not to sob. Keyvar hadn't hurt him, hadn't hurt Aveth, Diocore had.
He didn't want to do this. The gun lowered, but as it did Aveth's muffled, echoing scream replayed inside his head, accompanied by Diocore's laughter.
Aveth or Keyvar. The life of his friend or the life of the only person that stop Diocore.
Kwet had to...he couldn't just abandon Aveth. Aveth would do the same thing.
Wouldn't he?
Kwet clamped his fingers tighter around the gun's handle and raised it again. Set the sight, pulled in a breath, and started to pull.

/ fire away
147 words
Kwet's fingers squeezed.
And something with the force of an avalanche connected with his side.
He whipped around, trying to use the gun simutaniously as a shield and blunt instrument to no avail. A blade hooked underneath the muzzle of the gun and wrenched it out of his hands. Something bashed against his ankles and the blow sent him to his knees.
When the blur of walls and ceilng came back into focus, Kwet found himself staring down the flat of an electric sword. A blaster accompanied the blade and a pair of blazingly furious white eyes.
The blaster powered up with a throaty howl and Kwet couldn't move.
He shut his eyes and clenched his fists this was all he deserved. He was going to kill someone and now he was going to be killed.
Sorry Aveth.
They'd see each other soon enough.
The blaster fired.
