[HELLO YES i am back with a new chapter! i actually finished it several hours ago but i wasn't happy with it so i spent a lot of time editing/adding onto it. c:
i'm so glad you guys are enjoying it! it makes me so happy to see you guys excited about my writing. ♥]
It took the girls approximately three minutes and forty seconds to reach the main room. Aspen inhaled sharply, pressing her shoulder against the door, opening it. And there, huddled in a corner, with everyone crowded around her, sat a girl that Aspen hadn’t seen before. Aspen pushed by the wall of teenagers, kneeling beside the girl. Now that she was close, she could hear the girl chanting Olivia’s name over and over again, with grimy hands covering her face. It was kind of freaking Aspen out.
“Hey,” Aspen whispered. She gingerly touched the girl’s freckled shoulder. The girl flinched, but other than that – nothing.
“Careful, Aspen.” Beckett whispered, anxiously running a hand through his hair.
Aspen ignored his warning. “What’s your name?” There was no response, so she tried again. “Can you tell me your name?” She placed her own, larger hands, over the girl’s, prying them away from her face. The girl gasped, her eyelids fluttering. She couldn’t have been more than seven years old, with round, full cheeks, freckles, and strange, yet oddly luring sapphire eyes.
“What’s your name?” Aspen repeated. When she didn’t respond, Beckett took hold of her shirt, pulling her onto her feet.
“She asked you a question,” he growled, towering over the smaller one. Aspen jumped to her feet, shoving Beckett away from the girl, who was now shaking.
“Give her a break! Can’t you see she’s traumatized? Goodness, Beckett, what has gotten into you?” Aspen pulled the shivering figure into an embrace. “It’s okay.” Aspen didn’t know why, but she felt and odd pull to the girl, as if she maybe had known her before they had been dumped here. “Come here.” She led the child to the only chair in the room, sitting her down and wrapping one of the fleece blankets around her tiny form. “You can rest now, you’ll be safe here, I promise.” Except, she couldn’t promise that. She didn’t even know if they’d survive the night, though she didn’t tell the girl that. She didn’t want to frighten her. But was it really just for the girl’s sake? Or hers? Was she telling herself that they would be okay in this gloomy building? It was possibly one of the only ways to keep her sane. She tried not to think about it.
Aspen leaned against the chair, so that her back was digging into it. It hurt, but she was too exhausted to care. A near full hour passed before the child spoke.
“Larkin.”
“Huh?” Aspen took her hands, which were balled into fists, rubbing her sleep-ridden eyes. For a brief moment she forgot where she was and panic bubbled up inside of her, but that soon went away. That happened every time she woke up from sleep, because no matter how long she would be here, it would never feel right. It would never be home, something Aspen longed for more than anything else. “What did you say?”
“My name’s Larkin.” The girl repeated, her tone hushed and timid.
Aspen was now fully awake, though all she could muster was an, “oh”. An uncomfortable silence settled between them, the only sound the shuffling of feet or an occasional cough from someone among the group. No one knew what to say or what to do.
“Larkin,” Aspen finally said.
“Mmm?”
“Why were you muttering Olivia’s name?”
Larkin scrunched up her nose, her forehead creasing to create folds. “Who’s Olivia?”
Aspen couldn’t help but to feel disappointed by her answer, but she tried to shake it off. “No one, never mind.”
It could have been a few seconds, or a minute, or an hour before someone finally said something. “So, we’re giving up on the search for Olivia?” Had it been asked by Rose or Erric, it would have sounded sarcastic, but the question was seething sincerity and concern, and came from Pidge.
“No,” Beckett answered, clenching the water bottle in his hand so tight that his knuckles turned white. “We’re not giving up. Not ever.” Aspen’s heart went out to the boy, and all she wanted to do was hug him. She knew he missed Olivia more than anyone here. “Let’s split back into our groups.” He demanded, but Atlas laid a hand on his shoulder.
“It’s too dangerous to go out at night, Beckett. You know that.” Atlas reprimanded in a firm yet kind tone.
Beckett’s shoulders slumped. “Yeah, you’re right. Everyone, get some rest, we’ll start fresh tomorrow.”
“Will you be okay here?” Aspen asked, turning to Larkin. The child nodded, the edges of her mouth twitching. “Good.” She moved over to the other end of the room to join the others, a thin blanket draped over her shoulders. She lay down, wedged between Heather and Pidge. After a few minutes, she heard their breathing shallow and steady, low snoring that sounded more like humming. They were asleep, but Aspen still felt completely awake. Tomorrow would be the second day since the lady over the intercom had said they had ten days. They had eight more days to figure out this puzzle. Eight days to survive.
And what of this little girl with the strange sapphire eyes who claimed to know nothing about Olivia? Did she know more about Olivia than she was letting on?

never give up hope! I'll always be posting chapters, they just might take awhile. xD I'm also hoping to create a sequel when I finish this; but only time will tell. xF
also, yeah, I'm going to try to make Larkin very loveable, though she may just turn out as a brat without me trying to make her like that. xD

still hoping that they find oliviaaa, beckett must be devastated Q.Q
ahhhh, thank you. ♥ there's actually history behind that name. i used to play a game called FeralHeart [it was my life for 3 years actually cx] and the main character i used was named larkin. i had so much fun roleplaying with her and my other friends. so, while typing this chapter i was like, "i haven't used that name for such a long time and i really like it, so why not for this story?" so, yay. pointless information, but yeah ... xD
and yeah, he is pretty devastated.
//pats his head reassuringly
shhh beckett we still love you
rosemarrie wrote:there needs to be a ten days fan club lol.
so we can all just rant and go off about miss bliss here killing our favorites.
because you know it'll happen.
fan club? haha, i don't know about that. it would make me look extremely conceited and if i made one no one would join and i'd be a huge loser. xD
i'm not going to say who i'm killing and who i'm not, though i have some awesome ideas in store and i just can't wait to play them out AHHH
