The rotted and mangled skin of the creature gave off a putrid odor that caused my eyes to water. It flashed sharp white teeth in the form of a crude grin as its eyes locked with mine, the glowing crimson irises sent a chill through my body. Long nails filed to a point flicked every which way from its fingers that were, on their own, long and gnarled. Two horns protruded from the crown of its head and curved sideways before jutting upwards. Much of its body was hidden by the hooded robe it wore, but, one thing was for sure, it wasn’t here to make friends.
I backed up against the wall, scrambling away as the creature laughed darkly. Fear leaked from every fiber of my being and the monster knew exactly how I felt. Everything became a weapon in my mind. I could use my phone as a distraction, throw it across the room and make a break for it. The pillow, that could confuse it. If only my fear would permit me to move.
“S-stay back!” I stammered out with no luck towards sounding confident. My voice squeaked and I screamed for my caretaker as the thing reached out to me with amazing speed. Its hand latched around my neck, its skin was cold and clammy. I could feel the bones that had broken through the flesh of its own hand. The stillness of the hand made my shaking more obvious. As its grip tightened, my breath caught in my throat. Choking. I was choking. This was it. I would die at the hand of some creature that shouldn’t exist. From the corner of my eye, I could tell it had reached for something that was now clasped in its free hand.
Death. It was something I had contemplated before. After my mother died, it was an easy way to escape the pain. I had considered it. But, I knew that I didn’t want to be that girl. That girl who couldn’t handle sadness or difficulty. Now, my life in the hand of another, leaving this life didn’t offer the comforting idea it once had.
Another laugh rang from the creature but was cut short just as my sight was becoming blurry. Something caused the creature to drop me and I slumped to the mattress, gasping for precious air.
“Didn’t we warn you not to touch her?! Hm?!” That voice, that terrible, annoying, yet relieving voice. “Sandra will be very displeased with you, Atemlos.” Tye clucked his tongue as the thing he referred to as Atemlos groaned angrily and charged forward. It was a moment after I was comfortably breathing again that I noticed the boy from before looked different. The first apparent difference was that strange, black tattoos covered his face and arms, I could only guess that they continued over the rest of his skin. The ink reminded me of spider webs laced over his body. On his face there were only a few. There were two etched from the corners of his eyes, meandering down his cheek and neck to disappear under his shirt. Two curved arcs met at the middle of his forehead, melting into a mark that looked similar to a double headed eastern dragon. His arms were done in a similar style, tattoos and markings intricately designed on each appendage, down to his fingertips.
The next thing I noticed were his eyes. Hidden behind his bright blue hair were two pure white oculi, lacking any pupils, they seemed to glow faintly in my dim room. His ears jutted out of his long hair, coming to a point that reminded me of an elf. Piercings ran down each ear for what seemed to only for the sake of appearance. Two black ram horns curled at either side of his head with their tips aimed forwards. Behind him, a pointed tail that was lined with spikes lashed back and forth.
A flash of metal shot me out of my distracted state. Tye leapt backwards and revealed two M1911 pistols, the type I had recognized from my foster dad’s gun store. But these two looked as though they had been modified. As Atemlos reached for the boy, he froze, the barrel of one of the pistols was held at his head.
“Another move and I
will shoot.” Tye’s voice was dark and deep, it almost seemed to be echoed by whispered voices.
“The High Overlord will rise... the time is nigh....” Atemlos chanted repeatedly in a ritualistic tone. Slowly, his voice raised, with it, Tye’s temper skyrocketed.
Tye lifted the second gun to the creature’s head and leaned forward ever so slightly. “Goodnight.” My hands flew to cover my eyes as two loud gunshots rang through the heavy air of my room. Images flashed before my eyes. The thoughts that gunshots brought were not ones I enjoyed.
Reports that a middle aged woman that committed suicide today are still being investigated. It is confirmed that the woman took a bullet to the head. The weapon was found lying near her, but police have yet to confirm that it was suicide. The news reports had happened so recently.
This just in. The name of the deceased woman has been released: Luna Jones. Luna was the widowed mother of one girl by the name of Roseanne. Luna’s husband died in the war for our country. My body shook still, though only part of it was from the monster.
“Red! Snap out of it!” I blinked open my eyes to be met with those terrifying white irises.
A scream escaped my throat as I lurched backwards. “Stay away from me! You’re not real! You can’t me! You’re a monster and I’m dreaming!” I was near tears. It was then that I noticed the boy was much taller than before. His form was more defined and muscular. He was positioned strategically so that I could not see behind him. What was he hiding?
What my mind screamed couldn’t be Tye, my instincts told me that it was the same boy as before that now reached out to me. “Red, I know this is all probably very alarming, but, please, come with me. It’s not safe here anymore. I’ll explain on the way.” So shaken, terrified, and confused, I couldn’t fight back when he lifted me into his arms.
“Close your eyes.” He instructed me firmly when he turned around. I should’ve listened to him, heeded his warning. Across my floor were the bloody remains of what had attacked me. Two holes in its head seemed to leak blood and something else that I could only name as parts of the brain. Those were the only details I was able to discover before I gagged and felt my head go light. I was never too weak stomached when it came to blood. But, seeing it strewn across my room and what usually found it’s home in ones head on my floor, must have been where the line was drawn. Everything became dark as my body went limp.
