“Pretty good,” Ellise replied, a smile spreading from ear to ear.
“Cool. Hey, is Alexa around?” I could hear the hope in his voice and breathed a sigh of relief; he was interested in Alexa, not Ellise.
“No, she isn’t,” Lizzie shot back before Ellise could open her mouth again. I was alarmed by the sharpness of Lizzie’s tone and looked up to see a grimace curling her lip, then saw Ellise looking at me with an alarmed look on her face. I shrugged back, not knowing why Lizzie suddenly was angry.
“Why do you have such an issue with me and Alexa?” Gwillan asked her, starting to sound agitated himself, and I could tell from his tone and delivery that their conflict had been going on for a while.
“Because she’s, oh, let’s see here, four years younger than you!” Lizzie answered heatedly, her eyes flashing and a wind picking up. The staff, the only other people in the restaurant, were starting to stare, but she didn’t seem to notice. She probably wouldn’t have cared anyways.
“So? I really like her Lizzie, and I don’t get why you can’t just accept that!” I could hear electricity cracking in the background behind Gwillan’s voice and guessed that he had the same effect on weather that his sister did.
“Gwillan, you’re nineteen. She’s fifteen. That’s statutory rape!” Lizzie really was shouting now, and every eye in Good Times was on her. “That makes you a pedophile!”
There was a long silence on the other end. Finally Gwillan said, his voice cracking, “I can’t believe that you of all people, my little sister, would say that.”
“Gwillan, she’s my best friend, and, let’s face it, you’re not exactly the best guy for her,” Lizzie told him, her voice losing its volume and edge. The staff was still listening intently to every word she said though; this was probably the most exciting day at work any of them had ever had.
“Then who is the right guy for her, if it’s not me?” Gwillan sounded tired and depressed now.
“Well, for starters, someone she can date without violating the law,” Lizzie replied.
“I guess that is pretty important.” I could almost see the weak, disappointed smile on Gwillan’s face and felt bad for him.
“Yeah…” There was a long silence from both ends as Lizzie waited for Gwillan to say something and Gwillan waited for Lizzie to say something.
Finally he asked, “So why did you actually call me? I hope it wasn’t to yell at me about Alexa, right?”
“I called you to recruit to help me, Ellise and Johnson take down the government agency that I – well, we – used to work for.”
“Used to for you as of when?” His tone of voice gave away the fact that he was paying very sharp attention now.
“About an hour ago,” she answered, a smirk spreading across her face.
“Did you just go rogue?” Gwillan was starting to sound amused himself.
“Yep.” Lizzie’s eyes were dancing and she was showing her blinding white teeth in a beautiful smile. She really was in her element when she was rebelling; rebelling was also one of her best skills, but that was probably because she did it so often.
“Proud of you Liz,” he replied, his own grin obvious enough that it could be seen through the phone. “By the way, who’s Johnson?”
