Choices:
1: Offer the food
2: Tell her to leave
3: Bluff and threaten
4: Offer the food
5: Offer the food
6: Bluff and threaten
7: Offer the food
Roll says... 6: Bluff and threaten.
"Um..." You try puffing your fur up as much as her. "I'm not afraid to fight you for this...food, whatever we're about to eat."
Mist stares at you, then bursts into laughter. You shrink considerably, half in surprise, half in embarrassment.
"What, you're gunna be all nice to my brother, and then aggro to me?" Mist says once she's finished laughing.
"You deserve it," Charlie says affectionately. "Asterpaw, you've gotta be more confident. A threat like that isn't going to work if you just look like you are now without getting a little more intimidating."
"What, skinny and three-legged?" you say dryly. "At least I tried. Should I grow my leg back right in front of them?"
Now Charlie laughs.
Willpower +1.
Charisma +1.
Experience +1.
Mist lightens up a little once the twolegs come out and dump some sloppy stuff into the bowls, greeting you with one of their loud meows and then ducking back inside. Just as you jump up again to eat, Charlie stops you.
"Take a whiff of this," she says. "You can't be too careful."
"I thought you said twolegs like us," you protest ("Twolegs, what?" snickers Mist). "Wouldn't they give us good food?"
"Sometimes they rely on you trusting them, and they'll put poison in it." Charlie nods when you bristle in shock. "I told you, they made this place for them, not for us. These humans, I doubt will ever do that, but just in case, sniff the bowls."
"What should I be looking for?" you ask, leaning over one bowl. "Or...sniffing for."
"Do you know what garlic smells like?" Charlie says.
You brighten. "Yes, actually. We have some growing at home."
"That's going to be your biggest indicator. If you smell garlic, no matter how good it looks, don't touch it." Charlie thinks for a moment. "And if you see a sprinkling of something blue in there, don't eat anywhere near that place."
"Rat poison," Mist says, half-way through her bowl. "Most common way of getting rid of pests like us."
Your stomach curls. After sniffing your bowl thoroughly, you eat (evil or not, twolegs know how to make a meal). You hear cats come by, asking about feeding time, but none of them come near you and Charlie. They only jump up to eat when the two of you leave.
The rest of the night is spent by knocking the lids off of trash cans, which is really hard for you to do, but for Charlie, it's effortless. She helps you pick out the edible from the rotten, what will make you sick and what will give you energy. It's an oddly fascinating business - one that you can't imagine having much use in your territory, where everything is generally alive, but one that will help you get there.
When dawn arrives, Charlie brings you to another part of town like the one you were last at called a "suburb". You spend so much time looking at the houses that you're quite startled when Charlie says, "Alright kid, I'll see you later."
"Where are you going?" you say, a little frightened that she's going to just leave you here.
"You remember me telling Falcon that you've got free reign over Derby?" she says. "I've got to go make sure that everyone's heard it. There's a couple scouts around here that will send out the message for me, but you've met some of our fine citizens. They're not exactly eager to have you tramping all over the place."
"You'll come back?" you ask nervously.
"Of course." Charlie smiles almost maternally at your fear. "We're not done with your training. Stick around this neighborhood for the day, and I'll meet you later tonight. This'll be good practice for you."
"...Alright." You sit down, tail tapping the ground. "I'll...I'll stay close."
"Atta boy." Charlie waves her tail before trotting off.
Well. Now you're alone. This is fine. Maybe you can catch a nap somewhere. You look around for your options.
Under the big house with a porch.
Behind the dingy brick house.
