Black snarled deep in his throat and showed all of his teeth to Kane. He crouched low for a moment, all of his muscles tense.

“Black.” Nitro’s growl was low and deep. Black held Kane’s gaze for a moment longer, then turned away and headed towards the cave. Diesel ran up next to him.

“You can’t seriously be going to get Mystic.”

“I don’t have a choice.”

Diesel sprinted so he was ahead of Black then turned to face him. Black slid to a stop before running face first into Diesel.

“No choice?” Diesel snarled. “You can’t just hand her over to them, they will kill her.”

“Its her or they will start hunting us all, you heard him.”

“So, we fight them.”

“And how many more die then? You know the pack rules Diesel, we don’t sacrifice everything for one member, we never have.” A pained look crossed over Black’s face for a moment and Diesel blinked; then as quickly as it had come, it was gone and Black continued. “Get out of my way. Go back with the fighters, they’ll need you if something happens.”

“No.” Diesel snarled, baring his teeth at Black and raising his hackles. “I’m not letting you take her.”

“Diesel…you couldn’t stop me.” Diesel lunged and Black swiftly sidestepped him, then spun around and, in one quick movement, pinned Diesel to the ground, his teeth snapping inches from Diesel’s throat.

“Don’t.” Black snarled, his blue eyes locking on Diesels for a moment before letting him up. Diesel’s ears drooped as he realized he had no choice. His tail hung low as he walked back towards the group of fighters. Black watched him go, then sprinted towards the cave.

He trotted a few feet in the entrance and barked once. It brought silence to the cave.

“Mystic, we need you.” He called. He had decided on the way to the cave he wouldn’t tell her what was happening until they were back at the meadow. He couldn’t risk her getting scared and trying to run.

At the sound of her name Mystic’s ears pricked forward. She looked to the front of the cave and was shocked to see Black standing there waiting for her. She trotted quickly to the front.

“Y-you need me?”

Black simply nodded then turned back toward the meadow at a run. He was surprised when he turned and found Mystic keeping up with him easily.

“Is everything okay?” She asked, lengthening her stride so she was running right next to him. The training had already mad her more fit. He had never admitted it, but he saw a lot of potential in her. He shook his head to clear his thoughts which she took as a no.

“No? What’s happening?”

Black slowed to a walk as they got closer to the meadow.

“The Hell Hounds have given us an ultimatum.”

“Which is?”

“We give them a pack member, just one, and leave a kill in the meadow for them once a week or they start hunting us all.”

Mystic stopped short, her eyes wide with understanding.

“And…I’m the one they want?” She asked quietly. Black nodded slowly.

“Kane seems to have taken a liking to you.”

Mystic tilted her head at him.

“And if I refuse to go?”

“Everyone knows you are here, they would just make you go.”

“So..that’s it? You just give me up and let me die to save the pack? They’ll kill me you know.”

“I…don’t think Kane will. Not right away, not if you do this right. Listen to me,” Black spoke soft and quickly as the rest of the fighters noticed their presence. “I have an idea. I don’t know if Nitro is going to go for it, but…I’m not going to leave you with them. You just have to stay alive long enough for me to come get you.”

“Which is how long?”

“I don’t’ know…a few days at least. But…I brought you here, this is my fault, I’m going to fix it. But…you have to go with them.”

“Why should I trust you?” Mystic snarled “You hate me.”

“Do you have another option?”

“I could run.”

“Go ahead.”

Mystic glared at Black, her pale blue eyes meeting his bright ones and holding his stare. She knew he was right, she didn’t have a choice. If she ran now, Kane would catch her, or worse, hurt others out of anger.

“Fine. What do I do?”

“Its not just Kane, Axe is with him too. Axe is very violent, so don’t make him mad. The rest of their pack, though twisted and mean, are usually fair. Just…do what they ask. Try to avoid water, it will make following your scent easier. If you have to cross the river, try to sit down or lie down on the other side. Act tired, like you need to rest. Just…whatever you can to give me time.”

Mystic nodded and walked with Black toward the meadow. As they got to the clearing she cringed when she saw Inga being held by the neck by Axe. She walked up next to Nitro who looked at her sadly.

“Mystic…I’m so sorry…”

She shook her head slowly and turned her gaze back to Kane.

“I’m here, now let her go.” She growled. Kane laughed and the sound gave her chills just like it had the first time she heard it.

“Oh, its not that easy. I let her go now and all of your fighters attack us, I’m not stupid. You come to me. Alone.”

Mystic took a deep breath and walked out to the middle of the meadow. Inga whimpered as she got closer.

“Mystic, don’t do this.”

Mystic ignored her and stopped a few feet in front of Kane.

“Let her go.”

“I’ve always loved that you are so feisty. Axe, let her go.”

In a movement so fast Mystic barely saw it coming Axe let go of Inga then clamped his jaws around the back of her neck. She snarled, her eyes still fixed on Kane.

“I will come on my own, you can have him let go of me.”

“Oh, but its so much more dramatic this way.”

Ingra growled and lunged for Kane and Axe bit down harder on Mystic’s neck.

“Inga! Go.” Mystic yelped. She winced in pain as Axe’s teeth dug deeper into her neck. He hadn’t broken the skin yet, but he would soon. Inga turned and ran towards the pack and Kane laughed.

“You’re one of us know pretty girl, and you’re all mine. Axe, lets go.”

Mystic felt herself being lifted slightly off of her feet as Axe and Kane took off at a jog towards the forest. She tried to look back at the pack but couldn’t turn her head. It left her with no choice but to run fast enough to match Axe’s huge strides and trust that Black would keep his promise.
