Catherine woke up with a start. Virginia was shrieking as Caspian and Adria tried to calm her down. Her hair was mussed and eyes wild as they flicked around the room with anxiety. Anyone awake was more subdued, but the nervousness was inside all of them. Catherine searched for Iris and Eric, who had most likely returned last night with news.
But they weren’t there.
“Catherine!” shouted Orion, pulling her up sharply and flapping his hands as he explained that Catherine was going to get their food for the day with Theo. Theo paced nearby, his head in his hands. “Catherine, pay attention. You need to be as quick as possible. We don’t want anything bad happening to you, like Iris and Eric.”
Moments later, the boy and girl were sprinting down the hallway. Catherine’s blonde hair whipped around behind her and Theo’s short brown hair flickered around like a candle bobbing in the soft breeze that hugged their bodies. “Theo- what’s going to happen? Will they get back?” Catherine asked Theo, her voice a scarce whisper as they skidded to a short stop in front of a pyramid of plastic containers.
Theo shook his head. “I don’t know.” he muttered as they scooped up their meal- four cans of chicken noodle soup, carrots and celery, two jars of peanut butter, three apples, water, and a loaf of bread. “It’s pretty sparse today.” he added as he grabbed Catherine’s hand nervously.
Catherine froze, staring in front of them. “Did you see that?” she murmured into his shoulder, squeezing her eyes shut. A person… another person. In black pants and a black shirt, and a black mask that barely concealed a head of bouncy and incredibly curly dark brown hair. Catherine thought as Theo pivoted to look straight into her eyes.
“What?” he asked tensely. “Did you see something? Iris? Eric?” he asked, swallowing as he gripped Catherine’s shoulders fiercely.
“No. It- it was nothing.” Catherine squeaked out, pushing herself away from the other boy and striding back to their room as Theo followed like a lost puppy.
They heard Iris’s squeals before they saw her and Eric as the lost adventurers bumped into Catherine and Theo. “I’m so sorry!” Eric told them, grinning forcefully and picking up the brown bread that had tumbled out of Catherine’s arms and onto the dusty ground.
Catherine and Theo stood, thoroughly stunned before grabbing the boy and girl and pushing them forward until they were standing in front of Orion and Virginia’s pale white faces. Everyone in the room crowded around, whispering quietly.
“Stop!” Orion bellowed, his eyes glaring with fire. “Iris, Eric. Where the heck were you? You scared the life out of us.” he scolded, his tone icy.
Eric looked at Iris for a split second, his eyebrows raised. Iris shook her head quickly before turning back to Orion and Virginia. “We got held back by a trap. There was fire, then rain, then smoke. We couldn’t breathe and had to settle down in a room to dry our clothes overnight. Sleeping was impossible- we were so worried about you guys and how nervous you’d be.” she explained, her eyes trained to her soggy shoes.
Everyone seemed to accept this as an answer, and hugged them both before attacking the food Catherine and Theo had set up while the explanation was told.
Suddenly, Catherine collapsed to the ground. She managed to hear someone screech out the word “vision” before everything disappeared.

“Chase, cut it out.” a girl, about fifteen, was yelling. A little boy scrunched up his face before sauntering off into a long corridor. “Sorry, C.” she murmured, slamming the door behind her as she turned to face the other girl, who was laying on the bed, a book shoved in front of her face.
The other girl had sunshine-blonde hair and was wearing a blue and white sundress, and was maybe fourteen or fifteen. She raised her eyes from the hardcover novel, her gaze settling on the door. “It’s okay, Mir. Chase didn’t mean any harm, I’m sure.” she told Mir, smiling warmly.
Mir sighed, looking back at the other girl. “Do you like the nickname C?” Mir asked meekly.
“It’s fine, Emirie. And you like Mir?” Cath said, her eyes bright as she teased Mir lightly. She had been calling Emirie by the nickname Mir for as long as she could remember, but Mir had just recently been calling her C instead of Cath or Cather.
“Yeah. I do, C.” Mir muttered quietly. “Chase is such an annoying little brother.” she added, her shoulders slumping as she toyed with her caramel hair. Her eyes, a soft turquoise, crumpled as her smile faded. “My mom thinks he’s God gift from Heaven, or something like that. She doesn’t do anything for me anymore. I like Chase, but I know, I just know… he’s going to grow up to be famous and smart and rich and spoiled, but I’ll be begging at his door.”
