After training, the group walked down the hallways of the large building. Of all the trainees, Alex had undoubtedly done the best. The kid was quiet, but he was intensely good. Mia and Shane were chatting, Alex was... well.. being Alex, and Cole and Orion were walking together, close but not quite touching. Suddenly a bright red glow filled the narrow hallway, along with a persistent buzz. Shae's voice sounded over an intercom.
"All recruits, to the takeoff dock!" The gang seemed to know what to do, everyone started jogging back the way they'd come. They in strapped their wings by pressing a small button on their wrist. Cole gesitated before pressing his, hearing the small click of his gleaming black wings opening up. They assembled on the island's dock, Shae in front of them.
"All right, guys, unfortunately this isn't the guy we were going for, but he's still a villain. He's one of the 'normal' villains, he wasn't born with powers. Ok, that's all you need to know, head out!" The group didn't hesitate, they simply jumped off the dock, the warm sea currents lifting them up. Orion stopped and pulled Cole aside.
"Ok, I know you haven't had much time to prepare, but I promise as long as I'm around you'll be fine. This dude doesn't have natural powers, do it's probably in his glove, like most villains. Shae has a rule, no killing, no matter what. Got that, kid?" Cole nodded, although it felt as though his heart would pop out of his chest at any second.
"Ok." She grinned and jumped off the dock, plunging into the water before shooting straight out, wind ruffling her hair. Cole gulped and followed suit. His nervousness eased away as he soared behind Orion, Mia, Shane, and Alex, feeling the wind blow into his face. Until, however, he saw explosions.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
As they neared the town, the explosions became louder. As well, debris and shrapnel were flying everywhere, accompanied by horrified screams as the villain wreaked havoc. With a twist of slim body, Orion streaked to the ground, followed by Shane, Alex, Mia, and Cole. Butterflies danced in the boy's stomach. Toughen up! With that thought in mind, he set his jaw and landed on the ground next to Orion. She was glaring at the villain, wearing a demon mask. Mia, I her griffin form, swept forwards, talons out. The man shimmered and disappeared.
"Ok, we know his power!" Called Orion over the blare of car horns and terrified screeches. With that, she shot into the air, targeting the villain, who'd reappeared on top of a skyscraper. He could vaguely be seen on his knees, stuffing something into the cracks on the roof. Orion streaked towards him, then leveled off a second before impact, a shadow darting from her hand. The man stumbled forwards and narrowly avoided tumbling off the edge, instead ducked and pulled out a small pistol. Cole's heart leapt, and before he knew what he was doing, he was slicing through the air, fists blazing. Orion twisted to see him coming, then gasped as a bang sounded from the gun. She held up her hands, whispy shadows twining around her fingers. The bullet was absorbed into the dark substance, rendering it useless.
Alex, Shane, and Mia came.
"About time you joined the party," scoffed Cole jokingly. Alex rolled his eyes, sending a coil of water-barbed-wire at the villain.
"Cole, let's focus, ok?" He suggested, as the villain howled in pain. The blue tendril had coiled around his arm, the razor sharp barbs digging into his skin, forcing him to drop the pistol. Orion dove forwards and snatched it just as the villain lunged forwards and put Cole in a chokehold, grabbing the smaller boy's hands to prevent him from using his firepowers. Determinedly Cole twisted and wriggled in vain.
"Stay back or I'll kill the kid!" Snarled the villain. Orion didn't appear concerned, twirling the pistol between her fingers as she advanced.
"I highly recommend not calling him kid," she said coolly, throwing down the gun. "Hurt him... well... just don't." The villain chuckled darkly, squeezing harder. Cole choked, desperately clawing at his captor. With a lightning fast movement, a shadow snaked forwards, wrapping around the man's throat. Orion gave the whisp a flick, sending the grown fellow flying through the air. He landed with a sickening crunch against the wall of a building. Cole started to crawl away. The villain stopped him, demon eyes glowing. He opened a small knife and lifted it into the air, when a shadow plunged through his chest, killing him on the spot.
