[it's been like two and a half weeks since the last chapter, yikes! but here's another chapter! thanks for the tips, rosemarrie, they really did help bring my muse back. c:]
The room instantly erupted in a chorus of outbursts. The noise was so great that Aspen had to press the palms of her hands to her ear to drown out the noise. Beckett was trying to catch everyone’s attention, but to no avail. Aspen had had enough. She dragged the only chair to the middle of the room, stood on it, and with her hands cupped around her lips, she shouted, “SHUT UP!”
Well, that got everyone’s attentions pretty quickly. Heads snapped in the girl’s direction and ten pairs of eyes stared, unblinking, at her. Aspen felt her cheeks warm up as she sheepishly climbed off of the chair and clasped her hands together behind her back. “Uh, Beckett wants to say something.”
“Uh, thanks, Aspen.” Beckett responded, clearing his throat. “Anyways, Olivia’s gone. She –”
“How is she gone?” Rose interrupted.
“If you would just sit down and shut up for five seconds I could explain.” Beckett answered in an irritated tone. Aspen knew she shouldn’t, but she was secretly glad – almost smug – that Rose had been publicly called out on her snobby behavior.
“As I was saying,” Beckett continued. “Olivia disappeared last night. She was sleeping right next to me, and when I woke up, she was gone. I searched everywhere for her. The water has somehow, magically, disappeared. Maybe it sunk into the carpet, I don’t know.”
“Genius hypothesis. Absolutely genius.” Erric said, looking down and picking at his cuticles. Out of everyone, he looked the least worried about Olivia’s mysterious disappearance. Though, Aspen was sure he only cared about himself, so she didn’t
“Will everyone just shut up?” Beckett snarled. Erric shrugged his shoulders carelessly, and Beckett continued. “Anyways, I’m going to split everyone up into groups of two and we’re going to go looking for her.”
“She’s probably dead.” Erric responded heartlessly.
Beckett looked like he had been stabbed in the heart. He chewed on his lip, as if biting back a smart reply. Aspen couldn’t help but to feel bad for the boy. Everyone knew he cared about Olivia – possibly even loved her, and Aspen knew it must be hard for Beckett. “You’re not impressing anyone, you know, Erric. You’re just making yourself look stupid, so I suggest you just shut your mouth.” Aspen growled.
“I’m just stating the facts. Isn’t that what happened to everyone else? They disappeared overnight.”
“This time is going to be different,” Beckett answered stubbornly. “I know it will.” He paused, lacing his fingers together. “Okay, groups. First, it’ll be Heather and Opal. Then, Erric and Hayden” – at this, Hayden’s face fell. He looked both frightened and disappointed. Aspen knew he had wanted to pair with her, probably because he wanted to discuss the note and they were the closest. – “Since we have an uneven number of people, Pidge, Atlas, and I will go together, and finally Rose and Aspen.” Aspen’s heart froze in her chest. Rose was the worst possible person to be paired with, especially since their fallout that morning. Aspen opened her mouth to protest, but Rose beat her to it.
“No! I’ll go with anyone but Aspen,” she whined. Beckett gave her such a severe look that even a girl like Rose wouldn’t dare complain anymore.
“Stay together, remember to bring your water bottles, and we’ll meet back here at six.” Beckett concluded, pressing his lips together, before his eyes lit up. “Oh, and I found these walkie-talkies a few days ago. Thought they would come in handy. Good thing I kept them, eh?” He handed each person one of the small, black walkie-talkie. “Okay, remember. Six o’clock. Good luck.” And with that, everyone split off into their groups and went separate ways.
As they were exiting the room, Rose turned to Aspen. “You know, I really hate you.”
“The feeling is mutual.”
↘ ↘They had been walking for several minutes before Rose finally spoke up.
“So, what were you and Hayden doing last night?”Aspen crinkled up her nose, facing the girl.
“What do you mean?”“You know what I mean. Hugging.” Rose answered, a hint of amusement in her voice.
“He looked like his puppy just died this morning when I pried him away from you.”“He needed comforting. That’s all.” Aspen stuffed her hands in her sweater pockets.
“From what? A nightmare?” The girl snickered.
“No, it wasn’t a nightmare. Would you just drop it?” Aspen was having a hard time keeping her anger under wraps.
“Fine, Miss Bossy.” Rose kicked a loose piece of cement that had crumbled from one of the walls.
“Hayden really likes you.”“I’m his friend, so of course he’s going to like me.”
“Stop trying to be oblivious. I—” Rose was cut off by a voice coming from the walkie-talkie.
Rose, Aspen, it’s Atlas.Rose’s eyes lit up. She brought the walkie-talkie to her mouth.
“What’s up, Atlas?” she crooned.
We need you to come back right now. Like, right this instant. It’s important.“What is—” Aspen started to ask, but Rose shoved her away.
“What is it?”Just hurry up and come to the main room!“Okay, we’re coming!” Aspen answered.
“If we run we can get there in a few minutes.”
