Chapter Four
Shadowmere
"This is why I said we shouldn't have told her so early!" Shadowmere neighed angrily.
“Well, she would have found out sooner or later, Shadowmere!” Mey snapped. “Her ears are beginning to change. You can’t hide that from her!” Shadowmere stared at her.
“Already?” he replied weakly. “But… It should have happened much later…”
“She’ll have the dream tonight, Shadowmere. Tonight.” Mey reminded him.
Shadowmere nodded. “You’re right. Do you think we should warn her?” Mey shook her small head. Next to the huge black unicorn, she looked like a newborn pup.
“She needs to recuperate. Now that she knows, it won’t hurt her to find out herself.” Right then, Addi walked back in with a basket half-full of apples.
“Addi, once you asked about my past. I refused, but now I think you ought to know.” The girl’s blue eyes lit with curiosity, mingled with confusion.
Shadowmere folded his legs, laying in a very dignified manner on the straw thickly scattered in a corner of the front ‘room’ of the tree ‘house’.
“Since I was a yearling, I have seen… things…” he began. “I was more powerful than any other unicorn I knew. One day, I was racing in the woods with my elder brother when a wolf attacked him. It was huge, and easily killed Andron. I managed to kill the beast, but was sorely wounded." Shadowmere stepped forward into a patch of bright sunshine, turning so Addi could see four long, thin, faded scars on his left hind leg that the elf had never noticed before. Her blue orbs grew wide, and she stifled a gasp. Shadowmere chuckled wryly from deep in his throat. "Aye, I am marred by that panther." He continued his story. "When I returned to the meadow where my dam an the rest of the herd was resting, I went straight to my dam, to try to explain. But I had a vision. A vision of my brother, whom I idolized at the time, wreaking havoc on the small village of Borganottli, instilling terror into the hearts of the bravest villagers. I knew, at that moment, why, for months, my brother had been slipping away from the herd. Sometimes he would be gone for two or three days.
"The panther, captured at birth and trained by the villagers for sport, had been sent to kill Andron in any way necessary. I don't belive they tried it again, the panther caused them more trouble than it was worth." Addi nodded. Some of the older slaves sometimes spoke of a large, sleek black panther that had been trained by none other than Michael Barson, Addi's old owner. She spoke not only of the aid it gave hunters, but also of the trouble it caused. One day it disappeared, and everyone presumed the beauty dead. WIP
