PART 5
After walking for a few more minutes they came to the stream, as promised. Mystic walked out into the middle of it and sighed as the cool water ran over her sore legs and feet. She bent to drink and had to fight the urge to lay down in the water. She was exhausted and it would feel soooo good. She drank her fill and then walked back to the bank to stand with the others. Black had his ears pricked in the direction of something coming from across the stream. Nitro lifted his muzzle and sniffed the air.
"It's Gia, no threat." Black relaxed his protective stance and went to the stream to drink. Mystic turned to Gage and cocked her head.
"Who is Gia?"
"My sister. She is always roaming the forest, so she is usually one of the first to greet us when we come back."
Mystic turned her attention to the dog that was now crossing the stream. She had a dark coat, very similar to Gage's, only more of a blue tint. The pattern on her coat was also very faint, almost invisible unless you knew to look. The only thing that immediately gave her away as a designer dog were her vibrant pink eyes. She bounded across the stream easily and landed almost silently on their side. She greeted Gage with a wagging tail.
"Glad to see you back in one piece."
"I always come back in one piece. I'm slick like that."
Gia snorted and laughed and as she rubbed her head against Gage's shoulder in greeting. She walked over to Mystic wagging her tail.
"Hi, I'm Gia. What's your name?"
"I'm Mystic...nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too. Welcome to the pack...well, almost. It's not too far til you can meet everyone else, but, more importantly to you, sleep."
"Sleep sounds amazing. So does meeting everyone else, but I'm just so tired."
"Oh, I know. I remember when Gage and I first came here. I was convinced I would never be able to walk again. I was depressed and just wanted to lay down and let something eat me. I'm glad I didn't, you will be too. Just give it time."
Gia smiled at Mystic then bounced over to greet Nitro and Black who were done drinking at the stream. They chatted for a few minutes then Nitro walked over to Mystic.
"Are you ready to go on? This is the last part of our trek, I promise. You can sleep for days if you need to."
Mystic heaved herself to her feet and barely stifled a groan. She stretched then looked at Nitro.
"Alright, lets go."
Nitro turned and joined Black and the two of them headed out in a ground covering lope. Gia, Gage and Mystic ran along behind them. Gia and Gage were nice enough to stay back with Mystic when she got tired and slowed down. They ran for a while longer then stopped at the top of a hill overlooking what seemed like a small valley.
"Here we are, home." Nitro said as he walked to the edge of the hill and looked down. Mystic cautiously walked up next to him and followed his gaze down the hill. Her eyes widened at what she saw.
There were a ton of wolves and dogs in the valley below them. At least fifty, if not more. Some of them were brightly colored and obviously designer dogs. Others were natural colored and were most likely wild wolves. There were puppies and adult dogs, all busy doing things. Mystic turned to Gage and Gia.
"Wow...thats a lot of dogs. And I'm supposed to get to know them all? I don't know about this...."
Gia laughed and stood next to Mystic.
"You'll fit in just fine, don't worry. Everyone has a part to play, you'll find where you fit. Just give it some time."
"She's right, " Nitro said, agreeing with Gia, "Everyone has a place to fit in the pack, it's just about finding your place. Which you will never do from up here. Let's get going."
He headed down the hill and Black, Gage and Gia followed him. Mystic stood at the top looking down on the huge group. She had never been around that many dogs before. She watched as a few of the puppies noticed Nitro approaching and they happily barked and whined as the ran for the hill at top speed to meet him. She sighed, then took a deep breath and followed them down the hill. She reminded her self that she had to fit in, this was her only choice.
