Another day, another mission. HOWLS was up and running again after Loki's recent departure, and everything was crazy as ever. HQ was hectic, but that was becoming the norm these days. I was sat at my computer, faffing about on a childish game, when Cara (732) walked up to me. She was another agent that was higher up the ranks, so she immediatly exited the game and adressed me formally.
"I suggest you listen, 206. We have another mission for you. Gather your friends and meet 101 in BR2," I looked at her, not budging. I wasn't in a good mood at the moment, and I didn't fancy being bossed about.
"Now!" She barked, not caring when the few agents next to me turned to look. I glared at them before storming off to find Tex, Rita, Raven and Angel. A little bit of fresh air would do them good.
When we reached the second briefing room, I barked before entering. Once again, my next mission didn't fail to surprise me. We sat down, and Kelly started going on about Jay again. More tracks had recently been scented, and she was supposedly scouting about our perimeter. But why?
"All the tracks we scented our real. No fakes," Kelly went on. "We want you to follow them, check the area and see if there are any clues to why she hasn't come within 200 meters of HQ. Ok?" We nodded, set of towards the door and once again grabbed our equipment. Then we split up, no questions asked, and began searching. I wasn't disappointed when we didn't find anything. I mean, it wasn't like we were ever going to. I was really begging to think this whole thing was a wild goose chase, but then a bit of hope sparked up. Somebody had actually seen Jay. Or a slim figure running through the darkness, but whatever. The chances were it was her - Jay was coming home.
"As you know," Kelly began. Her voice was loud and clear, and she was addressing the whole service. "We have been informed of a sighting of another dog. This could be Jay. Today we are taking in a witness and asking what they saw. What this dog said to them. This is a normal day and I want you all to behave as so. No jeering, no threats. Are we understood? Good. 206, 459 and... K! Come with me," Kelly led us to the door, and there we met a large beagle. She was very thin, though, and had a scar cutting across her muzzle. It was kind of eerie, slightly disturbing. But I listened as we walked and Kelly explained to this new dog. For a moment it felt like I was back at school, sat there while some complete stranger entered the class and tried to act normal.
"This is HOWLS HQ. We are a secret service protecting the world from it's greatest threats, and nobody knows who we are. We send in actors to play the hero, and cover up our work. This is why you must pledge to never say a word - even if it decides your fate,"
The dog paused for a second. She looked clueless, but nodded anyway.
"Follow me," 101 continued, walking off, expectantly hoping for her witness to follow. We all did, and I think she got the point. We were now in BR1 (briefing room one) and sat down. Kelly looked at this dog - Nira - as she glanced about the room, before we began.
"So, you saw a dog? Spoke to her?" She looked confused for a moment. Then answered.
"Well, not exactly- This dog looked desperate, urged me to read a piece of paper. Had a picture on it, of her. had wings and everything. Here," Well, I never knew beagles were cowboys.
Nira handed the picture to Kelly, who glanced at it, bemused. She then turned to me.
"Nine," She muttered.
"Huh?"
"Now!" She snapped, pawing the paper to me. She then dismissed my friends and let Nira go. We could trust her. I ran off, out the door into the open. Well, the open of the main hall, anyway. I passed the picture to Nine and he flicked his eyes at me, then back to the paper. Then once more on me.
"See these wings she got on?"
"Yeah,"
"They're from Crest Street Park, the dove statue," I looked at it. Of course!
"Go!"
After these words I set off. I can't describe everything to you, Crest Street is so beautiful. Golden walls and roads with the tiniest little detail engraved into them. So pretty. You may even go as far to say breathtaking. When I finally arrived at the park, I was out of breath. I never realized how fast I ran. But I suppose Jay really did mean a lot to me. Prodding the ground with my paw, I panted, glancing up slightly. As I thought, there was another message pasted onto the statue of the Crest Wings. It said 'Yofv qzb rh ifmmrmt, Wzipmvhh rh xlnrmt. Dsvm gsv hmld rh xizdormt, gsv yofv vbvw wlt rh uzoormt.'. What? Another code?
This one however was a lot harder to crack. As soon as I got back, Nine was on the case. It took him two days to crack, but that's still record time considering how fast I could have done it. It was a reverse swap code, making A equal Z, B equal Y, and so on. This code was strange, and clever, and what it meant was even weirder. It said
"Blue jay is running, Darkness is coming.
When the snow is crawling, The blue eyed dog will be falling," Texas read the first three lines, I finished it off. I gasped. I have the bluest eyes of everyone in the service. Was this some kind of prophecy? Did it mean me? A shiver ran down my spine.
"Ok, let's just concentrate on Jay first," Nine asked, as if he was asking my consent first. I nodded, then me and Texas set off, Rita following closely behind. We didn't have much of an idea of where she was, but according to the code, it had something to do with snow. Up at the canyon, it snowed very little in winter, and it was quite windy. Maybe that's what it meant when it said 'The snow is crawling'? Apparently it did, because that's where we found Jay. I began to speak, but she growled and it drowned me out. Her short fur was coated in mud and sand, and there was a scratch down her face. She pawed a piece of paper to me, and looked down at a weird collar she was wearing. On the paper, it said,
"Can't talk, hears what we say, can't come near base, has a tracker. Can't take it off; KAT, indestructible".
Damn. Somehow we had to get this thing off. I was about to speak when I remembered what she had said about it hearing us. So I retracted my claws and scratched into the stone wall beside us some instructions. It read 'We're getting help, we'll be right back' . She nodded, and we set of once again. It wasn't long before we had been back and forth, bringing Nine with us. He had recognized the collar straight away, addressed Kelly and then told us how to get rid of it. That was the problem. We had to blow it up. Literally.
After telling Jay the big news, we had our work cut out. We finally persuaded her to let us use a grenade, though we had no idea how. Then Rita had an idea.
"Well, we could set a grenade timer, throw it at you, then have someone catch it so the debris smashes the- oh..." She whispered, just low enough so we could hear and the collar hopefully couldn't. I nodded.
"I'll do it,"
"No!" Texas jumped in. He looked at me, sorrow in his eyes. "You can't... It's to dangerous."
"I have to. You throw it. Now!" I took my position and braced myself. Texas set the grenade timer, but he didn't throw it. He just stared straight ahead, blind folded with his fear of harming me.
"Now!" I yelled again. Before he could hurl it at me, Rita batted it from his paws.
"Take cover!" She yowled.
The hard shell smacked me straight in the face, and I howled in agony. A piece of steel hit me in the ankle, and I felt a bone shatter. I whimpered and fell to the floor. It felt stone hard. Everything was a blur. I couldn't see, couldn't smell anything but smoke. My whole world fell apart around me as I lay collapsed in the middle of what seemed to be nowhere. As far as I was concerned, the tracker was gone, and I could tell as my friends were yelling my name. But that wasn't the problem. The smoke was. I began heating up. Hotter and hotter I became until I blacked out. Seriously, how many times can a girl do this?
