C H A P T E R E I G H T E E N
My eyes were flickering, and I could just make out the few dogs leaning above me. We were back at HQ as far as I could tell, and a lot of us were missing. Stood over me there were three dogs. Kasai, Taura and Kelly. But where was-
"Texas!" I yowled. I attempted to lift my body from the ground only to find it was impossible. I needed Texas.
"He's fine, 206," replied Kelly. "He's just resting, that's all," I sighed in relief as 101 assured me that the Husky was ok. Phew, I thought my whole life was ruined for a moment there. Then Kasai came along side me and nudged me upright. Taura helped to steady me, and we walked into the main assembely hall. I was a little wobbly at first, but when I saw Rita and Nine helping Texas to his place I felt fine. I smiled over at him, and he smiled back. When we sat down, we were across the hall from each other, but I couldn't take my eyes off of him. We were both mesmorized until another agent sat beside me, blocking my view of him. I sighed. Then it dawned on me - what was all this about, anyway? Turning to Kasai, I whispered,
"What are we doing here Kasai? Shouldn't we all be back in the field fighting the Outsiders off?" I asked. She looked at me.
"It's a rememberence service," The rottwieler began, "For the dogs that didn't make it,"
"Oh."
Whilst waiting for Kelly to arrive, I decided to check out my injuries. Almost all of my fur was singed, and I now had a huge scar up my rear leg. When I'd seen Texas, his leg was worse. His fur was bloodstained, and his paw had been scorched. To be honest I wondered how he'd coped with it. After a few moments, Kelly appeared on her balcony. Her white fur was partly matted, especially on her chest. You could see the blood on her muzzle and her ear had been torn - just like mine. It appeared she'd taken a pretty bad fall out there as well.
"Agents of HOWLS, we are here today to remember the brave dogs that died in battle yesteryday, and to honour them as heros. So as I read out this list I want you all to pray for their souls and for you all to know that they did not die in vein," A tear trickled down my cheek as I remembered Pistachio, and how I didn't help his sister. I let her go. But Raven was a fighter, she'd find a way out.
The hound that had sat infront of me slowly moved his head, and I got a glimpse of Texas. He didn't see me, but I smiled anyway trying to mask my tears. I was just glad he was alright. How he had braved almost being blown to an oblivion was beyond me. Texas was about to turn in my direction - thank god - when the hound lifted his head again and Kelly began to speak. I sighed and looked up to the balcony.
"Agent 079- a German Shepherd known as Prince fought a courageus battle against three rouges. He went head on and died saving his younger sister Friday. We will remember his sacrifice. Agent 130- A loving mother died saving her four young children from the flames. The four golden retrievers survived even though their mother did not - for her loyalty we will remember Mist,"
Kelly continued naming the dogs that died to save others, or to stop the oppsoition taking everything we had. I sighed, and most other dogs were crying. I was a little, but not that much. Pistachio hadn't been named yet.
"The two siblings, Agents 503 and 210, died saving each other. Pistachio was already crippled, and attempted to bring his mother back from the darkness, but he was too late. Raven, died standing over her brother to protect hi-"
"Raven isn't dead!" I yowled.
Kasai looked at me and pushed her paws down on my back, sitting me down again.
"Hawk, what's your game? Stop it!"
"No!" I growled. "Raven's alive and i'm gonna prove it!" I leapt up, knocking Kasai over. Rita snarled at me from the other end of the hall.
"Hawk stop it! Your embarrasing yourself!" I ignored her. I bowled her over, then stormed past the other dogs, pushing my way through the crowd. All eyes were on me, and everyone was whispering, laughing at me. They'd see. I was going to prove Raven was still alive, and then they'd wish that they hadn't laughed. I looked up to Kelly, my blue eyes wide.
"She is alive! She was taken by Angel! I know she was, I saw it!"
"Enough of this Hawk!" I raised a brow at Kelly as she came down the balcony. Her white tail stood up behind her, and her hackles were raised. She stood infront of me, her fur bristling. I didn't believe what I was seeing. Kelly never lashed out, and she always listened to what I had to say. Always. She growled at me, and all the other dogs were staring.
"Bu-"
"Enough Hawk! Enough of yourself, it's all about you! All you ever do is think about you! Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. Now isn't the time, Hawk! We're all griefing, now get over yourself! You are suspended until further notice! Get out!" The dog snarled. Her muzzle was scrunched and I could tell the Husky was serious.
"Fine!" I barked. I heard suprised gasps in the crowd. My tail was high, my fur also bristling as I turned away from Kelly. I was growling as I walked away, my paws feeling as if they would fall through the iron floor that they were pounding so hard. As I approached the door, I stopped growling. Then I heard paws and barking behind me. It was Texas. Some how he had managed to run, even with all his injuries.
"What?" I barked. I wasn't angry at him, I had no need to be. I was just so hacked off, I mean, how dare she? Fair enough she's incharge and everybody loves her, but even so. I mean, I was right.
Texas looked at me, and I raised a brow. My tail flicked, and I waited for him to say something. He didn't, so I turned and went to put in my passcode for the door. But he pushed infront of me. His bi-coloured eyes glared at me, as if holding me in position. I couldn't move.
"Oh for god sake Hawk!" He yelled.
"Raven is dead, ok? Now go in there and apologise, and you'll soon be back on duty,"
"Uggh! You don't get it do you?! I thought of all dogs, you'd understand. Raven is alive, and i'm doing this to help her! As soon as 101 realises that i'm not coming back, she'll realise that Raven isn't de-"
"Hang on a minute, I don't get this? Take a look at yourself!"
"Bu-"
"And don't come back until you've cleared your head!" He growled. The husky turned and stormed off, past all the computers.
"Agghhh!" I yowled.
