7: Am I property now?
Roll says... 7: Am I property now?
"So, I'm property now, am I?" you say jokingly. Truthfully, you have no idea what the word 'property' means. You think it's something like territory, judging by the conversation.
"Yep." Charlie scrubs at her head. "We could brand you. 'Property of Charlie'."
"I'd rather not." You have no idea what branding is, either.
Charisma +1.
The two of you stay the rest of the day in this yard. You spend a lot of it dozing and, in your waking moments, hungry. Charlie disappears again for a little while, but returns towards the evening with a pigeon that she explains she traded for. You don't ask what she traded in return - you just thank her and devour the bird so quickly you almost choke on feathers.
"Here's something else I want you to keep in mind, kiddo, in the future," she says once you've finished.
"What's that?" You start grooming, but you keep looking up at her to let her know you're paying attention.
"Food." She sits down on the pavement around the pond, watching you. "From what I can tell, you hunted for food at your old place, is that correct?"
"At home, yes." You say it conversationally, but give her a pointed look.
"Well, 'round here, it's not the same," Charlie continues. "You can hunt, sure, but half the time you're gunna find a rat or pigeon that's rife with parasites, or sick, or just plain bad food. You're gunna have to go unconventional with how you eat. Tonight, that'll be your lesson. I'll show you how to pick apart good food and bad food, how to get at it, the whole thing. And how to deal with other hungry cats."
"Hungry loners," you say, a little worried.
"Sure, if that's your word." Charlie lays down, resting her head on top of her huge body again. "Strays are fierce when they want something to eat, kiddo. And sometimes there won't be enough for everyone. How do you handle a situation like that at home?"
You look down, thinking. "Well..."
The kits and queens eat first.
We hunt outside our borders.
We trade with our neighbors.
It's never happened for me.
