I want to write a story, but first I need to finish my NaNoWriMo... before June 30th! Anyone have tips on writing on a deadline?

Don't procrastinate. Honestly. Write every frigging day. I didn't, and ended up with just a little less than 15k words to write on the last day. I made it (almost in the last minute XD), but my joints hated me for that. Don't do that.
Determination gets you far (plus a little Write or Die - that program saved me). It got me to finish. But a good plan and keeping to your daily schedule would have been way better. It would have saved me the stress.
It helps having a short outline of your story at hand. It also helps having some important, critical scenes of your story on paper (or in your head), one sentence for each. Giving them conflict you can work well with helps.
Telling your family or friends can help, too. I managed to write every day till I finished a 28k words story because I was writing it for two of my friends and I've talked to them through skype every day, so the pressure was on.
Every writer is different, so try different things. Just... don't procrastinate. I think that's pretty much a universal rule. It should be.

Thanks for the tips!

uh so hi, I'm just an inactive member popping in for some advice:

do you prefer to write in past tense or present tense?

I used to always write in past tense, but lately I've been using present tense for my short stories because I feel like it gives that sort of deeper, thoughtful feel to writing [ lol did that even make any sense ]. but i've seen that a lot of people like writing in past tense, which i used to like too. so yeah, which do you prefer?

[ and i'm really sorry if this has already been asked on this/previous thread(s) :c ]

@Ochibi
I've never written in present tense before xD I just realized that. I guess (same as abstract) I was just taught that way and I'm most comfortable with past tense.

I prefer past tense if your writing a novel/ette/lla whatever, as I think it gives you the ability to get more description in, if you're a very descriptive writer, and your not just stuck to one person's POV, which I really like!

But I agree that the present tense is much easier to write with for short stories :D

Present tense gives your story more immediacy. It feels closer, more palpable, because it's in the NOW, as opposed to in the past, as past tense suggests. It works pretty well for short stories, but when you write novels, present tense can kill your readers faster than you can blink. Just imagine reading a whole 300 pages and more in present tense. Add first person into the mix and the readers will scream in agony.
Here's a bit on first person.

That said, I really like present tense. Sometimes I write my short stories and vignettes in it :3 Whenever I think it fits.
I still prefer past tense for longer stories because it's the easiest to read, since we've probably all read WAY more stories in past tense than in present tense. But just looking at the tenses, I don't really have a preference. Whatever fits best.

Definantly present tense. I accidentally slip into past tense sometimes, or vice versa. Present tense is more easier for me, because I don't have to use multiple words as in; she, Rachel, or her {just examples} In present tense you say; Me or I usually which is much easier o3o

Past tense for me. It's the way I was taught and though I was given a friendly challenge (for present tense) by a fellow writer, I just wasn't comfortable writing present tense. I do practice on occasion but past is much more easier for me.
