Roll says... 6: Just a rat.
"Yeah, but it was just a rat," you say.
Tag blinks at you slowly.
"It was a pretty big rat, in my defense," you say.
"Silence," says a cat behind you, who you assume is the captain of this patrol. "Save your breath for the fight."
"If there is a fight to begin with," Tag mutters.
The rest of the run is silent, which is lucky, because you can faintly hear challenging shouts echoing through the empty streets. You're relieved to step back into view of the Fury patrol and see that they haven't changed their positions. There is, however, a long line of cats bordering the building that you assume is the deli, all yelling taunts and insults.
"There you are," Blitzkrieg says, giving you a casual tail-wave. "No trouble on the way over?"
"None," you say.
"Hopper thought he heard something," Tag says. "So he made me go and get the patrol by myself."
"It was just a rat," you say quickly, carefully watching Blitzkrieg's face. "But you can't be too careful, right?"
Her eyes give away nothing. You can't even really tell what her smile is supposed to mean. "We appreciate the caution."
"Hail, Blitzkrieg," says the cat you think is the captain. "I didn't think you'd need our help."
"Usually, no," Blitzkrieg says, turning to look at the crowd of cats. "But something tells me this isn't all of them."
You half-wonder if she even needed the help in the first place.
"We're under your command, ma'am," the maybe-captain says, nodding. "On your word."
"Hang on," Blitzkrieg says. "Let's try diplomacy first."
She steps away from the group and raises her head high, watching the crowd. The cats across the way gradually go quiet with slightly confused frowns.
"Howdy, boys," Blitzkrieg says. Her voice bounces off the walls of the buildings around you.
They don't respond.
"I assume you don't intend to walk away peacefully," she continues. "But I figured I'd offer. We can still talk."
"Who of the Corps wants to talk?" one of the cats spits.
"I do. Where's your captain?"
"Dead," another cat says shortly. "You killed him."
"Whoops," Blitzkrieg says quietly. You're flabbergasted to hear a smile in her voice. "Is that what this is over?"
"Among other things," the cat says.
"Does my patrol have to get involved?" she asks. "I wouldn't want them hurt on my account."
"Blitz, we'll fight with you," hisses Gabber. "We can take them."
"Will you, now?" Blitzkrieg looks back. "All of you?"
I can't do much, but...
Let's just talk to them.
This is your fight, not mine.
Say nothing.
