- "Shomari." Shani was trying to catch up to her brother. "Shomari, wait! We need to talk."
"No, we don't."
She groaned, picking up her pace. They'd been putting this off for too long and they needed to talk. She'd been in the pride for nearly six months now and he had seemed fine with her being here but, whenever she tried to bring up his past he shut her out. They had to get over this. Move past it. She needed him to know how she felt about it.
"Come on, Shomari. Don't push me away."
"I've already told you: I don't want to talk about it."
"You can't just bury it. We're going to have to talk about it some time."
"Yes, I can and no, we don't." His voice was practically pleading.
Shani sighed. "Shomari, please."
With a sigh of his own he stopped, allowing her to pause and catch her breath. His eyes were screwed shut and his expression almost haunted. "Shani. You don't understand... I did things I regret. Horrible things."
She wanted to say that everyone had done something like that but held her tongue. She knew this was different. Different for him. The things he had done... not everyone did them. Maybe later she would remind him that it was just that- the past. He had moved past it. Gotten better.
"I just... I can't talk about it."
"Sho..." She placed a gentle paw on his arm. "I know it's hard. I already have an idea. Kind of."
His head snapped up to look at her. "You do?"
"Well, when I was searching for you, people talked."
He hung his head again. "Oh, great."
"Hey." She nudged his head back to look at her. "I'm not upset or mad or... Look, it's in the past. I know you're moving past it. I just wanted to move past it too. I want things to be fine between us. But it can't be fine if you keep shying away from the one dark thing in both our pasts."
He looked at her, hesitant. "I... I need time, Shani."
"How much time? I've been here for six months and we haven't talked about it once. At least not enough to be significant."
"I honestly don't know."
She looked at him again, forcing herself not to push him, and sighed. He said he needed time and she was just going to have to wait. "Can you at least promise me that you will tell me? When you're ready? I know you need time, but that could be anywhere from tomorrow to next year to the next decade. I just... can you promise? Swear to me we'll talk about this."
Again Shomari hesitated before slowly nodding his head. "I promise. I can't say when, but... I will tell you."
Still fighting against wanting to complain, she nodded her head back once. "I suppose that'll have to do."
"I'm sorry, Shani."
She chuckled but there was no joy in it. "It's alright. I'll just have to get over it."
