CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

----- I looked up at the sky, then back at the burning plane. I looked down at my left arm that was bent awkwardly and hurt like no end. My throat was making weird choking sounds, and my eyes stung, and my lungs also, but I did not move. I stared into the fire of my plane, my mind unable to wrap around the whole situation. A single tear slid down my cheek, and that was all I was able to do. I sank to my knees and buried my face in my hands, ignoring the pain shooting up through my left arm, my long black hair falling into my face as I chocked back on the pain. On the memories.
----- On the loss.

----- I was startled awake by a snapping stick. My heart started racing, and I realized the plane was no longer burning, so I had no light. But for some reason, I could see almost perfectly. But I did not notice that as my fight-or-flight mode had taken control.
----- Flight, I choose. I stood up quickly and meant to run, but I could not leave the plane.
----- Leave my parents.
----- But I had to. They were gone. I wasn't. I could still live. A tear jerked slowly out of my eyes, but I wiped it away quickly and sped into the clearing, the meadow.
----- I sprinted at first, then realized nothing was following, so I slowed to a jog. The moon shone eerily above me, lighting up the world. A heard a few howls that sent shivers up my spine and made me look behind me, but nothing was following. I cradled my left arm with my good arm, and settled down in the middle of the grass, fully exposed. I yawned, and fell over on my right arm, and quickly fell asleep, my mind repeating the terrible crash over and over again in my dreams.

----- When I woke up, the sun was fully set into the sky. I looked around and wiped the sleepy out of my eyes. My arm felt a little better, but not much. My throat burned like crazy, and I remembered something my dad had told me once. Water is most important. I struggled up and wiped my hands on my faded jeans. I saw a small steam running through, and quickly walked over to it, my throat screaming.
----- As I bent down to the water, a shadow fell over me. I yelped and fell backwards on my butt, but laughed when I saw it was only a bird.
----- I bent back over and put my lips to the cold water and gulped greedily. The water cooled my burnt throat and slid easily into my stomach. I drank as much as I could, then when I felt as if I could drink no more, I sat right by the edge and lay down, looking at the clouds. Me and my mom used to do this all the time.
----- As the time passed, my stomach rumbled. when was the last time I'd eaten? Ah yes, the dinner on the plane. Steak... gravy... my stomach growled louder and I sat up and looked around, as if food would pop up.
----- But of course, none did, so I got to my feet and made for the forest.

----- What was I thinking?! I didn't know how to hunt! I was going to collage to be a teacher, not a... Huntress! I sighed loudly, then heard another stick crack. My heart thumped loudly in my chest and I looked around, my legs frozen in fear. Another crack. Closer. A snarl. My eyes were glued to the spot where it came from.
----- Adrenaline pumped through my veins as I waited for the end to come. I put my arm over my face to protect myself, as if it would. Then I heard a loud howl, and AI realized it was coming from me. I snarled, and I heard a bark, followed by two responding snorts and growls, then leaves and sticks cracking, the sounds getting fainter.
----- I touched my lips, and they were normal. Maybe I had imagined it. Yeah, of course I did! How crazy was I to think I howled! I laughed, and set off, hoping to find food.

----- I took a bite of my rabbit raw. Long story, but yeah, I had caught it with my bare hands and snapped its neck. Beginners luck? It didn't taste that bad.

----- Full and thirst quenched, I was happy for the first time since the crash. I leaned against a tree and looked up through the dizzying patterns of the branches. My arm didn't feel too bad either. I even managed to wiggle a few fingers. Smiling, I slipped into a deep sleep, a waning moon shining above me, ribbons of light dancing around the forest floor.

----- "Don't make any sudden movements," whispered a deep voice. A hand was clamped over my mouth and I tried to scramble away, but the hand was holding onto my mouth like my life depended on it. I tried to scream.
----- "Hey!" he whispered angrily. "I'm not going to hurt you, but that might!" I said, and he pointed with his other hand towards a massive creature. It was snuffling around the brush, probably looking for food. It was thick, and had a long snout, like a wolf, but two tusks splitting his lips apart. His eyes were coal black, and his fur was a dark brown. It had the body of a bear, and long hair like a wolf. It's tail was long, skinny, and almost furless, but had a tuft on the end, kind of like a lion.
----- I relaxed as I realized this strange boy holding my mouth was the least of my worries.
----- "Okay, good," he whispered, pleased. "Now i'm going to take my hand away, and you will not talk or move. Agreed?" I nodded, and he removed his hand. I rubbed my jaw slowly, and looked at the boy. He was kind of tall, and had long, dirty blonde hair and clear green eyes.. He was muscular, and had a very nice tan.
----- "Come on, lets go," he whispered holding his hand out to me. I slowly took it, not knowing what he would do.
----- Obviously I did not.
----- He spread out a very handsome pair of wings. Amber with a very faint white line around the edges. Then he jumped into the air and pulled me along with it. I knew he was strong, but he couldn't carry me for long. But he tried, and we did make it far away from the beast. He landed roughly near a giant beautiful tree with curling branched covered in brown, orange, red and yellow leaves. He panted and wiped his forehead, even though it was getting cooler as the sun set.
----- Then it hit me. Sun set?! How long had I been asleep? But the boy interrupted my thoughts. "Sorry i couldn't introduce myself sooner. i'm Kevin." He held out a hand. I shook it. "I'm... Anna," I said, my voice scratchy after not talking for almost three days.
----- "nice to meet you Anna," he said, looking up at the trees. Then I noticed that he had actually FLOWN here with WINGS. He must have seen my face, because he smiled and spread them again.
---- "H-how..." I asked. He laughed, then explained.

----- "So the world is really ending," I said, talking more to myself. The sun was setting, and the world slowly became dark. "My dad always said it was just changing..." I looked at Kevin, and he looked back at me. "Your eyes are really pretty," he said smiling. I looked away, blushing. I had always liked my eyes. They were a shimmery gold with yellow specks in them. Then he leaned closer. "Maybe I should get a closer look at them," he said, slowly pushing my chin towards him. I closed my eyes and waited for the kiss. I felt his breath on my cheek, and-
----- Kevin rammed into me and flipped me on my back then dragged me up and ran. I heard a loud shout, then very heavy footsteps. Kevin dragged me into the forest and we hid in a prickly bush. "What's-'
----- "SHHHHHH!" he whispered angrily. I shut up and looked around.
----- "Where is he Alex?" asked a feminine voice. She sounded scared.
----- "Shut up Calli and I could find him!" said a boy. Alex I guessed.
----- We waited there until we heard them no more, then Kevin slowly came out of hiding. He turned around to me, an I got out too. "I'm sorry Anna, but I have to leave." He looked up, then back at me. He smiled. "I know what to do!" He took my hand and lead me over to the big tree. "I have a friend that told me about this tree. She has a group of friends and I think they are close to here. I'm not sure though." He looked me over. "Even though you're just a human, they will probably take you in." He smiled. I thought about that. Were they all like him with wings? "Just stay here, and they'lll come!" But a cloud of doubt came over his eyes. I knew he didn't really know what would happen. I was just a human.
----- "I'm leaving," he announced. I looked away, mad he would leave me behind like something he didn't need. He didn''t even say goodbye before he left. I heard the beat of his wings, and then he was gone. I felt so alone, but I didn't understand it. I was confused and lost, and now alone. Kevin had been hiding something from me, and left me.
----- I couldn't stop the tears from coming. I cried and cried until I was tired. I curled up into a tight ball and cried softly into the grass, wanting someone to understand me.
