Chapter 1m
-------->Continuation
"Well, we're trapped," Grasswhistle said dryly, plunking down on the floor and yawning.
"The dog's already gone though," I gestured at the window, where there was a sudden lack of homicidal canine.
"You mean we can't see him. He could very well be waiting in front of the door for us to come out. I don't particularly want to risk having my fingers bitten off," Grasswhistle replied. She yawned again then shook her head. I peeked out the window and sure enough, there was the dog, staring intently at the window from its vantage point on the ground, its nose twitching. The moment it caught sight of my face it went back into rage mode and leapt at the window again. I quickly backed out of the way. It snarled once more before dropping back out of sight.
You know how when one dog starts barking in a neighborhood, suddenly every canine creature in the entire state seems to be howling and yapping? That's exactly what happened. Further away, I could hear the barks, howls, and whines of many, many dogs.
There goes my peace.
"Well, I'm not getting anymore sleep tonight," Rosethorn commented sourly. I just noticed the bags under her eyes and chuckled.
"Not getting enough beauty sleep?" I asked innocently. She scowled and turned her back to me. I smiled then turned to Grasswhistle, who looked dead serious. Can nobody take a joke around here?
"Jarrah. Stop messing around, and lets figure out the best way to get out of here. I don't particularly want to stab that dog-"
"Can we call him Mr. Growly?"
"What?"
"Never mind..."
"Anyway, I don't think there's a backdoor-"
"Actually, there is," Rosethorn said, scooting over to us. "I wouldn't go into a building without at least two exit points."
"Really?" I asked. She nodded.
"I should have guessed that. Rose is as paranoid as a conspiracy theorist," Grasswhistle says blandly. Rose scowls.
"Yeah? But look who's alive because or her paranoia," She says, gesturing outside at the abandoned buildings.
"I happen to be alive," I volunteer. Rosethorn glares at me but I ignore her.
"Anyway, before someone interupts me again, we could probably exit out the backdoor and run until we get out of dog territory," Grasswhistle says. Its an okay plan I suppose. Dog territory is mostly around the suburbs and the outer edges of the city, a.k.a. right around where we're sitting. But running out of dog territory is not the easiest thing either. If you're lucky, you won't come across any other dogs and will just end up in the semi-safe zone. But that doesn't always happen. Badger once got bitten when he was on a raid. It left a scar too.
Rose looks irritated.
"That's a terrible plan," She grumps.
"Its the only one we've got," Grasswhistle growls. Suddenly, I'm smacked upside the head with a good idea.
"How long does it take to hotwire a car?" I ask.
"What?"
"Just answer the question, please," I say, feigning good manners.
"About five minutes. Why?"
"Do you think you could do it before Mr. Growly up front realizes your outside?"
Grasswhistle starts smiling.
"Why yes, yes I could," She grins. Rosethorn jumps to her feet.
"Is there a car back there? I didn't check."
"Actually, there's a meat delivery van behind the store next to us," Grasswhistle says. I make a face.
"It'll smell disgusting inside! Rotting meat? Did you think of that?" I protest.
"Its either that or we go and play with Mr. Growly and his friends outside," Rosethorn says, jabbing her knife at the door. I see more dogs have gathered. I sigh.
"Let's get this over with."
