PART 14
Mystic woke the next morning and groaned as she stood up. Every muscle in her body was sore. She stretched tentatively and winced. That made everything hurt even more. She yawned and blinked in the dim light of the cave. She saw a bowl sitting by the entrance. She walked up and sniffed it. She recognized it as the same stuff Haven had give her before for her sore muscles. She drank it quickly, grimacing at the taste but making a mental note to thank Haven next time she saw her. She stretched a few more times, hoping to loosen her muscles. It didn't work and she wandered to the stream and drank. The sun was just starting to color the morning sky and she sighed. It was the sign that she needed to go meet Black for more training.
She turned and headed that way, dreading it the entire time. She didn't mind the training as much as she minded being with Black. According to him, she never did anything right and it was really starting to irritate her. She made up her mind to try to get through training as fast as possible so she could work with the group and get away from Black.
They met at the same place they had the morning before and Black was already waiting, along with Ringo and Diesel.
"Good morning City Girl." Black spoke quietly, his blue eyes following her movements as she got closer. She completely ignored him.
"Good morning Diesel, Ringo." She wagged her tail softly at them and sat facing Black. He scowled at her.
"Today we start distance training. We will alternate fighting and stamina training so you don't hurt yourself. What we'll do today is a shorter version of the hill run that the group did yesterday. I will lead, you'll follow me, Ringo and Diesel will run behind you. The woods are dangerous. Do not fall behind, and do not leave us. Is that understood?"
"Yes." Mystic answered shortly, refusing to look at him.
"Great, lets go." Black took off at a steady pace. Mystic heaved herself to her feet and struggled to catch up to him. She could hear Ringo and Diesel's steady breathing behind her as they matched her pace easily. Mystic caught up to Black and ran with her head at his shoulder. The pace was easy at first as they crossed the clearing at the edge of the pack's territory. They got to the hills leading up to the woods and Mystic didn't think she would be able to make it up the first one. Her legs burned as she dug into the soft ground with her claws, fighting every step to keep up with Black. He picked up the pace when they reached the top and Mystic knew he was doing it to mess with her. Their run lasted about thirty minutes and took them up and down a few hills and through a part of the river that was so deep Mystic almost had to swim. More than once she wanted to collapse. It was only her determination to prove Black wrong that kept her on her feet. They ended the run at the same place they started. Mystic had to fight to stay sitting up; Ringo and Diesel barely looked winded.
"Not bad City Girl. I'll see you here at the same time tomorrow morning. We're done for the day."
Mystic turned to walk back to her cave and swayed on her feet a little bit. Diesel noticed and trotted up along side her, leaning against her.
"You okay?"
Mystic leaned on him gratefully.
"Yea, I'm okay. Just tired is all."
"Let me walk with you back to your cave."
"Thanks, that would be great."
"You're welcome. Between me and you, Black is being pretty rough on you. I didn't make this run until I had been in training for three weeks. I'm shocked that you made it."
"You and me both. I think Black has something against me. I don't know what his problem is."
"Black...has his own issues from his past. They make him kind of hard to get to know. He's not as bad as he seems."
Mystic snorted as she laughed.
"Well, issues or not he doesn't have to be as mean as he is. I mean, he's the one who saved me...and now it seems like he regrets it."
"I'm sure he doesn't. And if he does, then that's his loss."
"Thanks. And thanks for walking me back. I'm not sure I would have made it without falling."
They both laughed as Mystic moved away from him to go into the cave.
"You're welcome. You did really well today. Don't let Black get to you too much. I think you'll make an awesome fighter."
"Thanks Diesel. I'll see you tomorrow."
He nodded at her and watched as she disappeared into the cave. Haven was waiting inside with another bowl. Mystic didn't bother asking what it was, she just drank it.
"Thanks Haven. And thank you for whatever you left this morning."
"You're welcome. I know the fighters in training need all the help they can get. Just don't let Black push you so hard that you hurt yourself."
"How did you know Black was pushing me?"
"Black pushes everyone...but especially those he sees potential in. You've kind of been the talk of the pack since you got here. Black hasn't brought anyone new in a long time. He must think you are special."
"Oh really?"
"Yup. But you didn't hear that from me. One thing you'll learn about this pack...everyone comes with their own issues, even Black. Don't take things too personally until you know him."
Mystic nodded as Haven left the cave. She curled up in a ball, thankful to be off of her sore paws. Her last thought before she drifted into a dreamless sleep was that she would try to get to know Black a little better tomorrow...
