Someone shook my shoulders gently. "Cho?"
I opened my eyes.
Nora was leaning over me, concerned. "What happened? Where's Mother and
Father?"
Quickly,I scanned her face. Her eyes were still black. I scrambled backwards,
suspicious. "I killed them." The words felt strange coming out of my mouth.
They were something I never thought I'd say. I looked out the window- sunlight
was pouring through the blinds. I must've fallen asleep.
Nora sat on the bed and rubbed her temples. "Yeah, I thought that's what
happened," she muttered.
"So...are you Nora again?" I asked warily.
"Yeah. At the airport...I don't know. They told me they were my parents, and
when I tried to walk away, their eyes...All of a sudden, I just wasn't me
anymore. It was like I was trapped in a corner of my mind, and my body was
doing things, and I could do was watch," she said, confused. "I knew what was
going on. I just couldn't do anything about it. They were controlling me, weren't
they?"
I nodded. It seemed like Nora was back. I looked around the room, the black
puddle of liquid seeping everywhere. "Where's Toby?" I asked, suddenly
remembering him. Nora was normal again after Mother and Father melted,
but I wasn't sure if it was the same thing with Toby.
"I sent him downstairs to make breakfast," Nora said with a shrug. "I mean,
I woke up and he was sleeping on the bed while you were knocked out by the
wall, so I thought he might as well make himself useful while I got some sort
of explanation from you." She looked at me and raised her eyebrows. "Can i
get one?"
I sighed with relief, and tried to explain to her what happened last night. She
seemed to be able to follow it, nodding thoughtfully once I finished. "I'm glad
you didn't put on the eyes. I would've helped you, but I couldn't do anything
in my body." She fell silent, frowning. "I hated that feeling."
"Uh...guys?" Toby appeared in the doorway, looking sheepish. "Where's the
silverware?"
Nora rolled her eyes. "In one of the drawers. There are only four, shouldn't
be too hard."
Toby saw me, his eyes widening. "Cho! Okay. What happened last night? One
second I was talking to your parents, and the next I was standing in your
parents' room. You were sleeping against the wall, and there was black liquid
everywhere. I didn't know what to do, so I went ahead and took a nap on
the bed. I hope you didn't mind," he added.
"No, no, it's fine." A little weird, but fine. "Look, you don't need to
make breakfast. I'll do it." I stood up. "What time is it?"
Nora glanced at the clock. "Nine. Are you still going to school?"
I hesitated, then realized there were a lot of things that I had to get done
first. I felt bad for skipping, but it's not like I always did it. "No, not today.
Are you, Toby?"
He shrugged, but looked a little guilty. "I don't know...I mean. I think my
parents are worried. I would've gone home earlier, but I wasn't sure if you
were okay. I was just waiting for you to wake up first."
"Right! They're probably looking for you," I realized. "You should go."
"Okay. He started to leave, then paused. "There's cereal on the table. And
I still didn't get my explanation."
"Oh yeah. I tell you later," I promised. "After I take care of a few things first."
"Alright. See you." He walked away. I waited a little bit, and heard the front
door slam shut.
Nora turned towards me, raising her eyebrows skeptically. "You're really going
to tell him?"
I shrugged. "Sure, why not? Probably an edited version though," I joked. Nora didn't
laugh. She was curled up in pain, rubbing her eyes. "Nora?"
"My eyes really hurt. Like, really bad. It's like they're trying themselves out of my
sockets." Her eyes were closed, and she was shivering.
"Are you okay?" Obviously not, smart one, I told myself.
"Yeah. I'm fine." She gritted her teeth and sat up. "Where's mom and dad?"
I looked at her doubtfully, then reached into my pocket and held out the
photograph to her. "They took them and forced them into the photo. I don't
how to free them."
What? Nora took the photograph from me, scanning the photo. "How do you
know it's just not a normal picture of them?"
"Because they've never been to the beach," I said quietly.
Nora shook her head, still staring at the photo. "You're right. But...this doesn't
seem possible, Cho."
"Nothing that's happened in the past few days has seemed possible," I pointed
out. "The real problem here is how to free them. And your eyes, too." I looked
at her carefully. "Those eyes don't belong to you, Nora. They belonged to
Mother and Father. And while they were alive, they didn't mind serving you.
But now that they're dead, they don't seem to want to be your eyes anymore."
I hated referring to the eyes as if they had a mind of their own. But I couldn't
deny that it seemed like that sometimes.
Nora looked at me, frightened. "What happens next? They're just going to rip
themselves out of my sockets?"
"I don't know, Nora. I could be wrong. But I think we need to get a new pair of
eyes."
Nora swallowed. "How?"
I went into the adjoining bathroom, taking a towel and using it to mop up the
black liquid. Why must I be the one to know everything? I don't! I don't know
the first step in stealing a pair of eyes. "Trial and error?" I meant it as a joke,
but Nora took me seriously.
"Cho! This isn't funny. Can't I just keep the eyes I have now?" She said worriedly.
"What happens if I do?"
"I don't know. Everything I've said was a guess. You think everything I say I'm 100%
sure of?"
"Well, guess then!"
"Well...Something bad is obviously going to happen. Those eyes are evil, Nora. Mother
and Father gave them to you, so why in the world would you keep them? You've got
to get rid of them." Secretly, I was worried they might even grow so independent they'd
try to take over Nora's mind. But I didn't want to voice that because it would scare Nora
even more. "You need new eyes, Nora."
Nora stood up and walked over to the window, staring out of it silently. "So what's
your plan?"
