Glaring white snow crunched beneath Denise’s warm winter boots as she trotted alongside her best friend who kept throwing around her head left and right to look at each and every shop window, and who also kept babbling on and on about trivial things. Hearing her happy, energetic voice was the only thing about this stupid, cold season that made Denise smile.
“Hey, are you listening to me?”
Denise startled as Megan called on her and then narrowed her eyes when her best friend had the nerve to laugh.
“You didn’t, did you? You’re also not helping me here!”
Denise sighed exaggeratingly. “I hate looking for presents.”
The open-mouthed full smile on Megan’s face took Denise by surprise, which was the reason that she wasn’t as attentive to what Megan was doing afterwards. Megan, the sly fox, attacked her. And by that, Denise meant that her friend pulled her into a hug.
“Aw, you’re so adorable!”
When Megan still didn’t let go, Denise started to feel a bit squished.
“Er… Meg… you can let go now.”
“But you’re so cute. C’mon, tell me what’s the reason for your grinchiness?” Megan asked and finally let go of Denise. They started walking again, but this time, Megan’s undivided attention was placed on Denise.
“That’s not even a word. I just don’t like it. It’s like commercialism is forcing me to buy into it – no pun intended – and I don’t like to be forced.”
“Aw, but you’re doing it of your own free will if you decide to,” Megan said and nudged her shoulder, “C’mon, it’s fun.”
Denise huffed. “Not for me.”
Which she probably shouldn’t have said, since it led to Megan ruffling her hair, to which she protested vehemently. She was still flattening it as Megan went on with the conversation.
“You’re such a cute Grinch, so petulant.”
“’M not,” Denise retorted, crossing her arms in front of her chest, which must look funny with the fluffy winter coat she was wearing.
“Are too!” and Megan even laughed at that!
“’M not.”
“You so are. It’s adorable.”
Denise could only roll her eyes at that to stop her mouth from forming a smile.
“Stop calling me adorable every five minutes.”
“But you are!” Again, Denise found herself in a hug, her face in the crook of Megan’s neck.
“You already did hug me,” Denise pointed out.
“Yeah.”
“Why are you hugging me again?” she asked as Megan extended the hug for longer than Denise thought was appropriate.
“’Cause you’re cute as a button and I wanna?”
Denise heard Megan chuckle, her body vibrating.
“You’re weird,” Denise told her and she was sure that her friend had heard the smile in her voice.
“And you’re a Grinch,” Megan replied as she let go again, a huge grin on her face, which should have made her angry, but it didn’t.
Still, Denise rolled her eyes. “Well, I am. So what?”
Megan’s face lit up as if enlightened and then it turned… evil.
“I’m gonna turn you around like the three ghosts of Christmas did with Scrooge!” Megan exclaimed excitedly.
Denise raised her brows. “Don’t cry once you notice it’s futile.”
Megan smiled self-indulgently at that and put an arm around Denise’s shoulder.
“Don’t worry, my little Scrooge, I’m gonna melt your poor, frozen heart!”
This time, Denise couldn’t stifle the chuckle that bubbled up in her throat. “Not gonna happen.”
“You’ll see,” Megan said, still looking like she owned Denise, a mischievous glint in her eyes, which, Denise had to admit, made her a bit nervous.
“Until then, let me hug you, my cute little Scrooge-Grinch!”
Even with the warning Megan gave her, she still wasn’t fast enough to dodge her friend when she flung herself at Denise again, hugging her for the third time.
Denise sighed. “I should be used to this by now.”
A small smile tugged at the corners of Denise’s mouth as she let her best friend hug her.
Being a Grinch seemed to have its uses. So maybe she should stay a Grinch for some time longer, she thought as she finally returned the hug.
But knowing Megan, Denise would probably only last a week before she would crumble.
A single snowflake landed on Denise’s cheek, cold and wet.
She couldn’t help her smile this time.
