The notebook contained a series of, to anyone who couldn’t read it, strange scribbles and shapes, that were actually the Harlek alphabet. Across the bottom of the front cover was scrawled- Óūµān ∑ō®¬∂ Īnƒō®µā†ōīn which translated into- Human World Information. On the first page it said Ā∫ī˙- Íūπē® Íπēē∂ which, to my surprise, translated to Abih- super speed! Zahe looked at me astonished. As we flicked through to other pages it looked like the Harleks had been gathering information about us and documenting it. As we were looking at Zahe’s page, before our very eyes the book started writing itself and added Âū¬†ī Òān©ūā©ē (Multi Language) to the list.
Me, Zahe and Reih looked at each other in fright. Could the book hear us? Reih looked around and gasped. ‘Abih!’ she whispered, ‘there’s someone over there.’
‘Where?’ I whispered back, ‘I can’t see anyone.’
‘Up there, on that bookshelf with a five on it. I think she’s invisible, ’cos she’s kinda blurry.’
‘Pretend we don’t know she’s there. Go get Hezeg.’ Reih nodded then turned invisible.
‘Turn to Reih’s page, quickly!’ Zahe said. I did. Just in time to see Íēē Īn√īßī∫ī¬ī†¥ and Īn√īßī∫ī¬ī†¥ (‘See Invisibility’ and ‘Invisibility’) write themselves on the page.
The library door clicked quietly shut and Reih’s small voice whispered, ‘The person on the bookshelf is writing some thing in her notebook. I got Hezeg.’
And with that, Zahe’s fears were confirmed.

Ezeh walked over to the bookshelf where the Harlek was sitting. She looked down, saw him, and silently jumped over the other side, only to be nocked unconscious by Hezeg, who was waiting for her on the other side of the bookshelf. The two boys lifted her up to carry her out to Majy.
‘Wait,’ I said, ‘I’ll search her pockets first.’ They nodded and brought her over to lie her on the table while I emptied out her pockets.
There was a knife, a small first aids kit, and a notebook in the pockets of her trousers. She was wearing a hoodie, and in the pocket of that there was a slip of paper that said

Which translated to something strange, and slightly disturbing-

Around the Harlek’s waist there was a belt, and on that belt were approximately 20 more knives, a small pistol, a cartridge of bullets, and a tube of blow darts.
‘Wow. Maybe I should just take the whole belt off.’ I said. When I was getting it out from underneath her back I felt something hard. ‘There’s something under her back,’ I said, ‘Can you help me turn her over?’ Under her hoodie we found a quiver of arrows.
‘If she has arrows,’ Ezeh said, ‘then where’s her bow? And why didn’t we notice the quiver before?’
‘Ohh,’ Hezeg said, ‘When I nocked her out she was still reaching up onto the book shelf like she was trying to grab something. Maybe it’s still up there. I’ll go check.’ he went over to see. Tippy toeing he could only just see over the top of the bookshelf. ‘Yep, there’s one up here.’ Me, Zahe, Ezeh, and Reih looked over to see Hezeg pulling down a HUGE crossbow. ‘This might be big,’ he said admiringly, ‘but it seems to be made of some lightweight metal, and it’s not heavy. At all!’

The Harlek stirred and groaned. I looked up from where I was examining the crossbow. ‘We should probably take these to Majy before she wakes up.’ I said.
‘Good idea,’ Hezeg replied, ‘Come on Ezeh.’ They picked her up and carefully carried her out of the library. Reih picked up the pistol and spun it around on her finger. ‘Can I keep this?’ she asked. I looked at her skeptically. Reih was 5 years old. ‘Maybe we should ask Majy.’ I said doubtfully. She sighed. ‘I suppose so.’ she said regretfully.
We walked through The Council Hall with a clear path, because whoever saw the boys carrying the Harlek moved out of our way so that we could get to Majy’s room without having to wriggle our way through the crowd. Nnay opened the door for us and Reih rushed in before the others. ‘Can I please keep the gun, Majy? Please, please pleeease?!’ Majy picked her up in surprise. ‘Abih,’ he said, ‘would you mind telling me what this is all about?’
I grinned. ‘Reih wants to keep the Harlek pistol, but I told her we’d better ask you first.’
‘Ahh. Yes, Reih you can keep it.’
I looked at him in horror. ‘But she’s five! you’re letting a five year old keep a gun!’
Now it was Majy’s turn to grin. ‘She may be young,’ he said, ‘but don’t under estimate her. have you ever seen her practicing? Ever?’ I shook my head. ‘No.’
‘You should. She’s doing some practicing tomorrow. Be there.’
I handed him all the knives and the crossbow. ‘We found these on her.’ I said, then pulled the notebook, the slip of paper and the blow darts out of my pockets. ‘And these. Do you mind if we double check if you searched him properly?’ I asked, motioning toward the male Harlek. ‘I certainly don’t!’ Majy laughed, ‘Man, she must have been loaded with weapons!’
While we were searching him I noticed something familiar about his face. It felt like I had seen him somewhere else. I racked my brain For somewhere I might have seen him before. It was only after I had searched him, found nothing and left Majy’s room that I clicked. he was the Hotel Manager that came into my room earlier.

I left the practice room the next day feeling astonished, bewildered, stunned, shocked etc. etc. sore and a little bit scared. Astonished, bewildered, shocked and scared because I had never seen a five year old doing anything quite like that before, or anyone else for that matter. Stunned and sore because Reih had shot me with her gun and, even though she was using dud bullets, it HURT!!! And, to make it worse, SHE DID IT ON PURPOSE!!!! Why? I don’t know, but she did. A full on shot, straight to my shoulder. Ouch.
I saw Majy walking toward his room and ran to catch up with him. ‘Majy!’ I called, ‘Majy I’ve got something to talk to you about.’ He opened the door and let me inside. ‘OK, sit down then.’ he said, motioning to a chair, ‘What is is?’ I sat down and frowned as I thought of how I would word it. ‘Come on,’ he said, ‘I haven’t got all day!’ I took a deep breath then blurted, ‘I’ve seen him before. The Harlek, I mean.’ Majy looked at me in surprise. ‘Are you telling me that you’ve met this Harlek before?’
‘Well, I wouldn’t say ‘met’, but yes. He’s a Hotel Manager at The Shuva Hotel. The one that I was staying in.’
‘Wait. . . Does that mean. . . Does that mean that if. . . If the Harleks are. . . fitting in with the humans– There could be some mixed in with us. Here.’
We looked at each other in silence and I felt the cold hand of fear grip my heart, then Majy said, ‘How do I know you’re not one?’ I looked at him in disgust. ‘Majy, you’ve known me for three years. I don’t think I’m a Harlek. Snap out of it.’ I stood up and left the room. Out side the room I leaned my back against the wall.
Maybe I over reacted, I thought, But still, he was being ridiculous. He kind of deserved it. I shrugged and pushed myself off the wall with my foot. Oh, well, the past’s in the past. I can’t reverse that now.
Suddenly it felt like I was being sucked back in time and I saw Majy as though I was looking at him through a tunnel of light.
‘Sorry, Abih,’ he said, ‘I kinda over reacted. I know you’re not a Harlek, I was just. . . lost in the moment.’ he stopped talking and I was sucked dizzyingly back into reality. I stood, simply holding my head for a few seconds, my eyes unable to focus, before toppling onto my hands and knees, my head still spinning. I blinked to clear my eyes and vaguely saw Tama running over. ‘Abih!’ he said, as his image faded. ‘Abih are you alri-’ that was all I heard before I blacked out completely.

I groaned and blinked my eyes open. I was in my room in The Council Hall. I should probably stop calling it ‘The Council Hall’, since its real name was really The Town Hall, because it was for more than just meetings. I groaned as I sat up and rubbed my head. I still didn’t know what had happened. I stood up, slowly, and tried to walk to the door but I was still too dizzy, so I collapsed back onto the bed.
I lay there, stretched out on the bed, doing nothing, until Rasm opened the door and came quietly in. (It was her room, too). At first I didn’t notice that she had come in because she had shaped shifted into a cat, so I only saw her when she jumped up onto the bed next to me. Seeing that I was awake she turned back into a human.
‘How’re you doing?’ she asked. I groaned in reply, and she laughed. ‘What even happened?’ I asked. ‘Majy sort of. . . reversed time. . . sort of, but your body wasn’t used to it, which made you blackout.’
‘How long was I unconscious for?’ She thought about it for a few seconds then said, ‘Two hours—maybe three? I’m not sure exactly though.’
I sat up again. My head was still sore but I wasn’t dizzy anymore.
‘Do you want me to help you out?’ Rasm asked when I tried to stand up.
‘No, I’m OK. Just got head rush.’

‘Abih!’ Reih cried as she burst in, ‘Come, quickly, the boy Harlek is waking up!’ Me and Rasm looked at each other in surprise, and together we rushed out of the room. The rush of adrenalin had completely stopped the dizziness.
I came into Majy’s room to see the Harlek sitting on the edge of the table, holding his head in his hands. He looked up as we entered the room. A look of astonished recognition swept over his face. ‘Áōū!’ he said, ‘Áōū ∑ē®ē īn †˙ē Òō†ē¬!’ which sounded something like ‘Ew! Ew erew ni et lotel!’
‘What did he say?’ Majy asked, and Reih answered, ‘He said “You! You were in the Hotel!” Was he talking to you, Abih?’ I nodded, ‘Yes, he was a manager in the hotel I was staying in.
His eyes flicked down to Reih, and he smiled a little. His smile faded as Majy told everyone excluding me to leave the room.
‘Can you understand english?’ I asked him, (in english), and he nodded. ‘Can you speak english?’ I asked him, but this time he shook his head, then said ‘Small. . . er- small- bits.’
‘OK, maybe just talk in your native tongue,’ Majy said, ‘and Abih can translate.’
And so, the interrogation began. (Although we didn’t gain very much information, because the Harlek himself didn’t know much.)
His name was Kaj, pronounced Cage. He was sent here with a small group of others to document who had what powers. Why, he didn’t know. The other Harlek’s name was Zara, she was the most skilled Harlek warrior in history.
When I asked him about the notebooks writing themselves he laughed and said that they had a spell on them so that whenever somebody wrote in one, all of the others updated themselves. He even gave us an example: he flicked through the notebooks until they were both open to Hezeg’s page, then, in one of them he wrote Í˚: ıō≈īn© (Skill: Boxing), as he was writing it, the same words appeared in the other one!
‘Ew es?’ he said, ‘Tat si we et koobtons eva et leps no met.’
‘You see?’ I translated, ‘That is why the notebooks have the spell on them.’
‘I do see,’ Majy replied, ‘That’s a very clever way of letting each other know what powers we have without having to rediscover it all over again if one of the notebooks is lost.’ he observed
There was a groan behind us. Kaj looked up and a huge smile spread over his face. ‘Zara!’ he cried, ‘Oh, Zara, raw ekawa!’ Me and Majy watched as Kaj ran over and they embraced each other in a tight hug. When they eventually broke apart Kaj explained, ‘Zara si em retsis.’ Which meant, ‘Zara is my sister.’
I eyed her nervously. Who knew if she had any more weapons hidden away on her. Zara looked at me with unimpressed recognition.
‘Zat “Hezeg” haz a very good punch.’ she said, her accent slurring her words, ‘And az I have seen, and still can see, he broke my brotherz noze.’ then, to Kaj, she said, ‘Yal nowd, an E liw skif ti.’
‘What did she say?’ Majy whispered in my ear. ‘She told him to lie down so she can fix it.’ I whispered back.
Kaj lay down on the table and Zara held her hand over his face and said, ‘Peese,’ which is the harlek way of saying sleep, which is ironic, since it sounds like peace. Immediately Kaj’s eyes closed and he fell asleep. Zara placed her two forefingers on either side of his nose and gently slid them down, straightening it in the process.
When she had finished straightening his nose Zara gave Kaj a slap on his cheek to wake him up. He woke with a start, and almost instantly put his hands to his nose to feel it. When he felt that it was straight and back to normal he sighed and said, ‘Ahh, that feels much better!’ only, it sounded more like, ‘Ahh, tat sleef chum reteb!’
I scratched the back of my neck awkwardly. ‘Sorry if Hezeg hurt you. . . or anything, Zara.’
She dipped her head in thanks. ‘Thank you. I am grateful for your concern, but no, he did not. Although I vould like to have my Swobsorc back.’ she said, pointing to her crossbow that was sitting on the desk behind Me and Majy. I glanced at Majy, who sighed and said, ‘As long as you promise to do absolutely no harm.’
Zara nodded in respect. ‘E esimorp nopa em rotsecnas tat E liw od on mar. I give you my vword of honor.’ she said. Majy stepped out of the way and Zara came forward. She picked the bow up with loving hands and whispered quietly to it, ‘Nekawa!’ Which meant ‘Awaken!’
‘Thank you.’ she said, ‘Now if you dont mind I vould quite like to meet some ov zese people.’
Majy sighed and said hesitantly, ‘Well I suppose so. If you don’t brake anything.’
Zara nodded. ‘Emoc no, Kaj, tels’ og.’
Kaj was sitting on the edge of the table flicking through his notebook. ‘Kaj!’ Zara said again when he didn’t hear, ‘Tel’s og!’ Kaj looked up with a start. ‘Huh?’
‘Tels’ og! Ewll’ ees emos vo et sretho.’
He glanced uncertainly at Majy then stood up and followed Zara out of the room.
When they had left there was a moments silence then Majy was asked me, ‘What was she saying when she gave me her “Vword of honor”? It sounded very formal, but I have no idea what she said.’
‘ “I promise upon my ancestors that I will do no harm.” ’ I answered.
‘Oh, well that’s good. For all I knew she could have been saying “Because if this I have an eternal grudge against you” and than lied about the “word of honor” part.’ he laughed.
‘That certainly wouldn’t end well.’
There was another moments silence then I said, ‘Do you really think they should be roaming around with all the others unsupervised? You never know if someone will get offensive.’
‘True,’ Majy said, ‘I hadn’t thought about that. do you want to trail them for me?’
I nodded, ‘I suppose.’

I left the room and looked around for the two harleks. So, since I didn’t spot them, I decided to have a wander around and keep an eye out for them as I went. It seemed like they had caused a bit of a commotion because there were a lot of whisperers.
I was walking past the door that led to the outdoor training areas, when it suddenly crashed open and Tama came rushing in, his eyes shining with energy.
‘Oh, boy!’ he cried, ‘this guy’s fun!’ We heard foot steps in the passage behind him and he darted off, Kaj soon following, his dark hair spiked from the wind.
I shook my head at them in disbelief. Best friends already? I was about to close the door when Zara came rushing in, bringing with her another gust of cold air. She had a calm, yet worried expression on her face. Her eyes flicked around the room then rested on me.
‘Vwhere is ze boss man?’ she asked. I looked at her, uncomprehending.
‘Who?’
‘The boss man! Ahh,’ she thought for a moment then said, ‘Majy! Vwhere is Majy?’
A sudden lurch of fear gripped my heart. ‘He’s still in his room, why?’
‘It’s Lehe,’ was her reply as she raced away. I followed her while the many eyes in the room followed me.
No sooner than I had exited the crowd in front of Majy’s room, did the door open, and out rushed Zara, followed by Majy and I raced along with them. Tama and kaj had seen us and wanted to know what was happening, so now the five of us were running through the outdoor training area.
When we came to the wall, Zara didn’t hesitate; She ran to a nearby tree stump, and, with a tremendous leap, launched herself over, me soon following. The boys, however, went a different way; Tama and Kaj straight-out summersaulted over, and Majy climbed.
We ran for a while longer, then finally stopped under a large tree. Walking around the trunk, we saw the mangled figure of Lehe.

As we carried her back inside Zara explained what had happened: They had been climbing the tree, and they had got quite high up when Lehe spotted something unusual, so she wanted to go and see what it was. She was on her way over when a bird flew out of its nest in the tree trunk in front of her and gave her a fright so she lost her balance, but there were so many branches underneath her that by the time she reached the ground both her legs and an arm were broken.
That, I couldn’t believe. Braking an arm and both legs, sure! But not being scared by a bird. Not Lehe, anyway- she was the last person I would be worried about!
Suddenly Tama was in my mind: You know, she is always saying that there’s only one thing that she’s afraid of. Maybe it’s heights or birds, or maybe it was just a coincidence. . . he trailed off.
Maybe, I replied, but I’m still suspicious. Plus, she’s not always saying it.
A large raindrop splattered down onto my head, sending a chill along my spine. Why hadn’t I seen those cloud gathering?
‘Whoops! Sorry, guys!’ Majy said, ‘I knew these clouds were coming, but didn’t think about the fact that we’d have to hurry and carry Lehe.’
Aoji and Ohrtaka suddenly appeared out of nowhere. They took Lehe out of the boys hands and teleported away with her.
They reappeared a moment later.
‘Hold hands,’ Aoji said, so we did. Aoji held onto my hand, I held Zara, she held Ohrtaka, she held Tama, he held Kaj, he held Majy, and Majy held Aoji’s other hand so we formed a ring.
There was a flash, then we were all in Majy’s room and Lehe was lying on the table.
‘Thanks,’ Majy said, ‘now could every body please leave while I fix her up.
