Vulnerable
He had always trouble communicating with the other children. As a child he would cry for the slightest hurt, be it physical or a harsh word. His cries were often mocked by the other children and as a sensitive boy he was hurt by their words. As a result, he cried more.
He dreaded school.
When Charlie's father asked him what was wrong, the boy told his father about the jibes and the mocking. The father laughed at the child, it was a gentle relieved laugh because Charlie had looked a bit more sad than a few childish mocking words warranted, but Charlie only heard the echo of the children's cruel laughter. He was so hurt that he vowed not to cry anymore.
Charlie noticed with time and observation that the other children and the adults alike didn't seem to be aware of the world outside of their immediate action. The children were often cruel and didn't seem to be aware of it.
The ever present pain that he suffered from was not felt by the others. At first he worried. In private, he looked all over his body but no physical injuries marked him. The pain was concentrated in his chest.
Afraid, he went to see his father. He remembered what had happened the last time he went to see his father. The condescendance in which his father reacted. Chagrined, he steeled himself and walked away.
At school he was more withdrawn because he reasoned that interacting with those callous children hurt alot and wasn't worth the effort. He lost so much faith that he hid his heart and soul from the pain of the living.
He hid it so well that he lost himself.
